Our customers in Cairns are enjoying being connected more than ever.

The explosion in applications, shift towards mobile video consumption and the use of mobile devices to search, buy and interact means demand for connectivity continues to grow strongly.

One of the ways we’re helping our customers in regional Australia connect is through our rapidly expanding Telstra Air network.

In Cairns, the network is proving very popular,  with more than 23 terabytes of data passing through 19 Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots in just over a year. That’s roughly equivalent to people sharing about 23 million hi-res images or streaming more than 11,000 standard definition movies.

Today, we’ve announced plans to switch on a further 100 Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots across the city in the coming months, enabling local residents and visitors to connect in more of their favourite places under our partnership with Cairns Regional Council.

Local residents and visitors can use Telstra.com/Air to find their nearest hotspot and receive a free 250MB data allowance per day. Telstra personal mobile customers and eligible home broadband customers who sign up to Telstra Air can enjoy free and unlimited access to the network just as they would at any of the other 900,000 hotspots across the country.

The expansion of the Telstra Air network across the city is an important part of the work we’re doing with Cairns Regional Council to help build a more connected city for residents and visitors.

Over the next three years, this work includes a major upgrade to the city’s CCTV network. As part of the planned $2 million upgrade, 159 cameras will be replaced with high-definition equipment to improve picture quality, maintenance and help keep pace with changing technology to provide better monitoring for a safer city.

We’re also working closely with the Council to help develop a mobile app that will better connect the community with Council information and services. It’s an exciting program of work and one we look forward to sharing more about soon.
