Do you feel like you have the right work-life balance? If not, you’re not alone. Many people struggle to juggle the demands of their job and family.

Here at Telstra, we encourage flexible working and we give our people more choice in how they work.

So we asked our senior female leaders how they get the right balance and here’s what they told us.

It’s personal

Our Director of Innovation at Telstra, Ayala Domani, says getting a good work-life balance comes down to you.

“Stay constantly tuned and avoid burnout, judgement and guilt. There is no one size fits all when it comes to balancing work and personal life – and it is personal.”

“So my advice is to stay very tuned to your personal needs and to the needs of your loved ones and constantly adjust and balance as you go, avoiding big burnout or dramas.”

Retrain your brain

Our Head of muru-D, Julie Trell, believes the language you use and how you think is also important.

“Avoid the phrase ‘I’m so busy’.  If you love what you’re doing at work, life or play, and your schedule is full, reframe the phrase to say ‘I’m positively occupied’.”

“Often language or choosing the right words can change attitude and perspective.”

Find a flexible employer

Karen Hughes, who is our Director, IT & Digital Solutions, says working for a flexible organisation such as Telstra, plays an important role in getting the balance right.

“It’s very important to work for a company whose values are congruent with your own. It can be soul destroying if it’s not.”

“And even in a company that encourages flexibility, it’s up to you to take accountability for maintaining balance.

Don’t be hard on yourself

Our General Manager Telstra Foundation, Jackie Coates, says it’s important to put your work-life balance into perspective and understand that you are not always going to get it right.

“Work-life balance is often challenging if you set yourself up to balance things perfectly.”

“Someone once told me it’s always a juggling act, things get compromised as life gets more complex but all you have to do is look at all the balls you have in the air and make sure you don’t drop the glass ones.”

Remember:

1. Retrain your brain to avoid the phrase “I’m so busy”
2. Find a flexible employer
3. Stay tuned to your personal needs and the needs of your loved ones
