Telstra TV is your gateway to thousands of TV shows and movies, through catch-up, live TV and on-demand. We’re constantly striving to make the Telstra TV experience even better, and our latest update brings voice control to Australia’s most popular streaming box through our partnership with Google.
We’ve all been there. You’re just about to settle down to stream the must-see series everyone in the office has been talking about when you realise you’ve lost the remote.
Now that annoying search around the living room will take a back seat to more relaxed enjoyment, thanks to a new integration with Google Assistant that brings voice control to Telstra TV.
The Google Assistant works on all Google Home devices, a range of third-party speakers, as well as the latest Android and iOS smartphones. It’s intuitive to use – just say “Hey Google,” and issue a command or ask a question to get a response from your Assistant.
We’ve enabled new voice commands for Telstra TV through the Google Assistant that match the features you’re most likely to use, and more are on the way.
You’ll be able to ask your Google Assistant to turn on your Telstra TV — which, for many modern TVs, will also turn on the screen itself — as well as open your favourite apps.
We also wanted to make it even easier to watch live TV, so you can ask the Google Assistant to “tune in” to a TV channel on your Telstra TV.
So, for example you can say “Hey Google, tune to Channel 9HD on the Telstra TV.”
And, of course, you can pause video and resume playing whenever you’re ready by using your voice.
Just say: “Hey Google, pause the Telstra TV” or, “Hey Google, resume the Telstra TV”.
Through the Google Assistant, Telstra TV owners will also be able to setup custom routines. These combine a set of actions and commands that can be triggered with a single voice command. For example, owners will be able to dim the lights and launch BigPond Movies on Telstra TV just by saying: “Hey Google, it’s movie time”. You can set up routines within the Assistant settings under your profile section of the Google Home App.
And soon, voice integration on Telstra TV will become even smarter. Owners will be able to ask their Google Assistant to search for a specific movie or TV show on Telstra TV, and launch straight into the title without having to press a single button on the remote.
Having access to all our Telstra TV apps means you’ll be able to switch between live TV and catch-up or on-demand video from all Australia’s major TV channels, or jump straight to an app like YouTube or Foxtel Now, using just your voice and a Google Assistant-enabled device.
If you’re interested in trying out the Assistant on a Google Home speaker, we stock the Google Home and Google Home Mini, which connect to your home Wi-Fi and give you voice control of your Telstra TV and other smart home devices. You can learn more about the Google Assistant, and how to use it, here.
