Yen, SYN‘s Young Media Leader for the Canberra Media Hub, ‘Young Folk Media’, shares the importance of youth radio.

The clock ticks down in the studio: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and we’re live “turn up your wireless, strap yourselves in, because its time…” There’s laughter, music and good conversation. Once a week I get to enjoy this process: collaborating and supporting young people to make radio.

In 2014 I was one of SYN Media’s Young Media Leaders, as part of the National Youth Media Project. I was one of five young people selected from around the country to be involved in training, planning and executing this national radio initiative.

The project – funded by the Telstra Foundation, Community Broadcasting Foundation and Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation – supports a new network of regional youth broadcasters on the premier digital station SYN Nation, including volunteers from my local community radio station, 2xx fm. (more…)

Removing CAPTCHA to give access for all

If you’re a regular reader of Telstra Exchange you might have noticed something different about this page today. Have a look around and see if you can spot it.

It’s not the colour spectrum at the top, it’s not the page layout… it’s that there’s no longer a field at the bottom of the page asking you a question to prove you’re a human and not a robot before you can post a comment.

That’s right, we’ve killed CAPTCHA.

Why? Because we want all our customers to have a brilliant experience with us, so I am really pleased that we’re helping people with vision impairment by removing CAPTCHA from our online Telstra pages. (more…)

Today, this idea received a $2.4 million boost with the announcement of five new Telstra Foundation community partnerships. While our partners individually tackle different issues, collectively they share a commitment to leverage digital technology to drive social outcomes. Telstra Kids Fund – a million ways to show we care

For over a decade, Telstra Kids Fund has been supporting the little things that make a big difference to kids’ lives: everything from worm farms to reading nooks, bouncing balls to veggie patches, educational resources to arts and crafts.

Backed by the Telstra Foundation, this grassroots community program has provided thousands of grants to local non-profit groups, helping more than a million kids to play and learn.

At the heart of the program are Telstra employees who nominate where the dollars are donated and help direct the company’s philanthropic giving.  Telstra Kids helps connect children with a brilliant future in the communities where Telstra staff live and work. (more…)

Many of the initiatives we’ve pursued this year, including the recently announced Telstra Research Partnership Program and our muru-D start up incubator, have the potential to deliver significant social outcomes for our customers and communities.
