Australia’s best 5G now in more places

By Nikos Katinakis October 12, 2020

We’re on a mission to bring better connectivity to everyone, especially with our 5G. We’re working to grow our footprint to 75% by June next year, and today we’ve passed an important milestone on that journey with over 2000 sites now live covering more than 41 per cent of Australia’s population.

We’ve made a commitment to roll out our exciting new 5G capabilities to more areas across metro, regional and rural Australia, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

More than 12 million Australians now live, work or pass through our 5G coverage footprint daily, giving them access to our superfast network at a time when connectivity matters more than ever.

There are now over 1400 suburbs across the country with more than 50 per cent 5G coverage, and we recently celebrated our 2000th live site in Airlie Beach in Queensland’s Whitsundays. It now joins more than 60 other cities and towns in the country where the 5G rollout is underway.

Since the middle of 2020, we’ve rolled out 5G to more than a dozen regional areas, including:

  • Nowra, Medowie, Corowa, Cowra, Orange and Malua Bay in NSW;
  • Paynesville, Wangaratta, Bairnsdale and Corryong in Victoria;
  • Sunshine Coast in Queensland;
  • Berri and Pt Elliott in South Australia and;
  • Esperance in Western Australia.

We’ve also rolled out improved in-building 5G coverage to key parts of Westfield Centrepoint, Bondi Junction, Macquarie Shopping Centre, Melbourne Central, Chadstone, Carindale, Chermside, Marion, West Lakes, Carousel Cannington and Booragoon Garden City shopping centres as well as selected areas of the Brisbane, Melbourne and Darling Harbour Convention Centres.

It’s an exciting time for 5G, with a number of new flagship devices on the near horizon. As more and more people get their hands on the devices of the future, it’s important for us to keep working hard to bring Australia’s best 5G to more and more cities and regional areas.

We’re a long way ahead of our competitors. We’ve got the technology leadership and we’re investing more overall to bring 5G to more Australians.

To find out where 5G is going to land near you, check out our new Mobile Coverage Maps that show not only where 5G is now, but where it’s being built in the coming months.

We’ve announced we will offer the second-generation iPhone SE, a powerful new iPhone featuring a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, paired with Touch ID for industry-leading security.

iPhone SE comes in a compact design, reinvented from the inside out, and is the most affordable iPhone powered by the Apple-designed A13 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone to handle the most demanding tasks. The new iPhone SE also features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone that unlocks the benefits of Portrait mode, and is designed to withstand the elements with dust and water resistance.

The new iPhone SE will be available from 8am AEST Friday 24 April at telstra.com.au and in retail stores*.

The familiar Home Button is designed with sapphire crystal and a steel ring to detect a user’s fingerprint for Touch ID, an easy, private and secure way to unlock iPhone, use Apple Pay and authorise App Store purchases.

The Apple-designed A13 Bionic, introduced with iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, provides unparalleled performance for every task — perfect for photography, gaming and augmented reality experiences — and enables great battery life. In addition, iPhone SE features the best single-camera system ever in an iPhone, which uses the image signal processor and Neural Engine of A13 Bionic to unlock Portrait mode(1), all six Portrait Lighting effects and Depth Control. Videos are even more immersive with stereo audio recording and cinematic video stabilisation on the front and rear cameras.

iPhone SE is wireless-charging capable with Qi-certified chargers and supports fast-charging(2), giving customers up to 50 percent charge in just 30 minutes. It is water-and dust-resistant with an IP67 rating for water resistance up to 1 meter for 30 minutes(3). Lightning-fast download speeds are available with Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit-class LTE(4), and dual SIM with eSIM(5) provides the flexibility for users to have two separate phone numbers on a single device while traveling abroad or for use as a business line.

Telstra Group Executive, Consumer & Small Business, Michael Ackland, said, “we’re excited about the introduction of the new iPhone SE and Apple’s ongoing commitment to creating incredible products. The new iPhone SE is an inspired reinvention that packs in the best Apple has to offer in a familiar shape and size.
