With Melbourne’s Indian Film Festival kicking off this week, it’s the perfect time to expand your movie knowledge and dive into some of the best international content on Telstra TV. From all the glitzy drama and romance you’d expect from a Bollywood classic, to seriously intense mysteries and crime thrillers, we’ve pulled together a list to get you started.
Gully Boy (Amazon Prime Video)
With renowned rapper Nas providing his creative flare as the executive producer of this brilliant coming-of-age drama, you’re guaranteed the perfect pairing of a captivating plot and really great music. GULLY BOY delves into the real culture surrounding India’s street rappers, and follows the life of character Murad Ahmed who turns to music to escape a difficult family life. After uploading his original hip hop music to YouTube and having it achieve viral success, Murad quickly discovers the temptations that come with fame, and its repercussions on his own relationships. Based on the true story of online sensations, Divine and Naezy, the film does a great job of educating audiences of India’s hip hop scene, while delivering a generous dose of gripping drama.
For those who love mystery, suspense and playing ‘detective’ at home, this thrilling crime film is a must-watch. ANDHADHUN centres on the quirky life of Akash, a talented pianist who employs less-than-normal techniques to deepen his music ability including feigning blindness. While putting on a private performance, he witnesses the murder of a famous actor while pretending he can’t see, and is quickly thrust into a world of corruption and criminal behaviour as he’s forced to confront the truth. But with bad guys hiding at every corner, achieving justice isn’t easy when Akash’s own life is constantly in danger – promising plenty of twists until the very end.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Amazon Prime Video)
One of the most highly celebrated Bollywood films, and certainly one of the most romantic, DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE is the perfect film for when you’re craving something a little bit light and sweet. The movie revolves around the budding relationship of Raj and Simran, a pair of young adults from very different family upbringings who happen to meet on a holiday through Europe. Enjoying the last of her freedom before Simran is pressured to marry an arrogant bachelor, she is forced to push aside Raj’s love and return to India for the arranged wedding. But with Raj equally passionate about being together, he desperately seeks the approval from Simran’s father. Prepare yourself for one emotional ride.
Another nail-biting murder mystery to get sunk into, BADLA follows the life of Naina, an intelligent, and married, businesswoman who finds herself locked into a hotel room next to her secret lover’s body. Naina’s life is quickly thrown into disarray as she’s arrested for his murder, and is forced to address her affair, and a lot more serious crimes she had been covering up. After hiring a prestigious lawyer to defend her case, Naina’s web of blackmail and secrets is untangled – and her fight for freedom becomes jeopardised as a dangerous rift grows between her and her attorney. Set over the course of one late evening of revealing interviews, this is one ending we didn’t see coming!
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (YuppTV)
This beautiful, and emotional, film tugs at the heartstrings in all the best ways as it looks at the unlikely reuniting of a very deserving couple. After opening letters left by her mother who passed away soon after her birth, eight-year-old Anjali honours her mum’s wishes of reintroducing her single father to his former female best friend and potential partner from younger years. But with so many years having passed, Anjali discovers the woman she’s seeking out is getting ready to walk down the aisle and attempts to alter fate by staging a meeting between the pair. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI is a different kind of love story that you’ll keep thinking about long after watching.
