Contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the world’s most significant development challenges.
They comprise 17 goals and 169 targets that seek to address the world’s most significant development challenges across environment, society and sustainable economic growth.
To achieve these goals, government, business and communities need to work together and challenge the way things are done. At Telstra we are working to align our business and sustainability agenda towards achieving these goals. As a universal agreement to work towards a better future, we believe the UN SDGs align closely with our own purpose to deliver a brilliant connected future for everyone.
Last year we highlighted four initial priority goals in which we believed we could have the greatest impact. Our new sustainability strategy was developed with reference to the UN SDGs and will provide guidance as we continue to demonstrate on-going tangible action towards these goals. The infographic below describes our progress delivering against our priority goals for FY17 and further down, we describe the relationship between the SDGs and our new sustainability strategy.
How the SDGs intersect with our sustainability strategy
Our new sustainability strategy is a multi-year vision with targets and objectives across three elements. It speaks to the fundamental role we have to play in helping our customers and society adapt to technological change and the opportunities it brings.

Our strategy and associated 2020 targets were developed with reference to the UN SDGs, in particular our four priority goals. The infographic below shows the intersection between our priority SDGs and our sustainability strategy.
How the SDGs intersect with our value chain
In FY16, we conducted a baseline assessment of how our programs, initiatives and operations align to the SDGs, and the areas in which we have can make the greatest impact. Our assessment looked at the relevance of each SDG and each of the 169 SDG targets across each stage of our value chain. We identified four initial priority areas for Telstra, and within these areas, have identified 11 targets that we are working to address.
