I am pleased to share some positive news as we begin the 2013 year. After 18 months we have completed the major project of migrating all existing copper services in the South Brisbane Exchange area to fibre, which covers over 18,000 services.

The construction and migration aspects of the project have been completed ahead of schedule and we are on track to hand over the site to the Queensland Government in June this year.

With migrations now complete, over the next five months we will be decommissioning the exchange and associated infrastructure, including the reworking of Telstra’s underground conduit network, the recovery of copper cables and the recycling of all scrap materials.

The construction of the new network is the largest scale Optical Distribution Network Telstra has designed and built, providing fibre access to over 13,000 homes and businesses in South Brisbane.

Around 120 technicians were trained on fibre to the premise technology specifically for this project, with 24 trainees commencing their telecommunications careers in South Brisbane. Most of these trainees are continuing their careers at Telstra.

For anyone located in the South Brisbane exchange area it will be business as usual from now on as connections, disconnections and faults on the new network will be managed directly with their telecommunications service provider.

On behalf of Telstra I would like to thank the South Brisbane community. This has been a unique project for our team and we appreciate the co-operation the community has shown in helping us to deliver their new fibre network and connecting their new equipment.

The project is moving closer to achieving the original objective of ensuring the new Queensland Children’s Hospital can be provided and completed as planned.

Our project community hotline service, 1800 336 334 will continue to operate throughout January during normal business hours.

Fast Facts:
Over the course of the project we have:

  • laid 284 kilometres of cable
  • laid 26.4 kilometres of new conduit
