The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, which go on sale today, have been awarded our coveted Blue Tick certification. The Blue Tick means the new Samsung smartphones provide the best possible coverage in rural and regional areas and join the list of handsets that we recommend for regional customers.

The scale and geography of Australia sets particular challenges for networks when it comes to providing mobile coverage. Furthermore, network is only part of the puzzle when it comes to user experience. The technology and design of the handset also plays an important role. It was for this reason, 11 years ago, that we instituted our Blue Tick testing program.

Each new handset is tested at our Wireless Innovation Lab in Paramatta. Conditions are set to simulate the device on the edge of mobile coverage by providing a low-level signal in an anechoic (heavily sound-proofed) chamber. The simulation is then re-run with technicians holding the device in a number of different poses so as to account for the interference different grips may have against the device’s antennas and these tests are run multiple times in order to establish a reliable average.

The testing doesn’t stop there, though. Once the lab results are completed the handsets are taken to remote areas and repeated in real-world circumstances on the live network. It is because of the extensive nature of these tests that we are able to confidently recommend those devices which will offer the best possible performance in rural or regional areas.

Kevin Teoh, Telstra’s Head of Mobiles, says “We are happy to report that the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ both came through our extensive field and lab tests with flying colours, and are duly awarded our Blue Tick certification.”1.
