We got our hands on the new flipping legend from Samsung: the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, and it’s proof that great things come in small packages.

What is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G?

Samsung bet big on folding phones a few years ago, and now it is streaks ahead of the competition.

The Z Flip3 5G is one such folding device in a clamshell format. It flips open and closed with a strong hinge to reveal a massive screen in a tiny footprint.

The new Z Flip3 5G is cheaper than previous models, lighter, stronger and even more capable.

It’s the folding phone for everyone. Here’s why.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G: big screen, small phone

Phones with big screens, allowing you to watch all your content and take your video calls on the massive display, have become all the rage. The trouble is they’re unwieldly and take up a stack of space in your pocket or bag.

The Z Flip3 5G doesn’t need you to make that compromise: it’s all the benefits of a massive screen in a device that flips down into half its size.

The 6.7-inch display on the inside has less bezel than previous models, making it better for viewing truly cinematic content, playing games or just getting stuff done in comfort. It also has twice the refresh rate of previous models at 120Hz, so it’s smooth and easy on the eyes. Does trying to understand Hertz hurt? Think of it like this: 120Hz is a measure of how many times the screen refreshes per second. 120 means there are 120 images being shown on screen every single second. More images means a smoother image, and that’s what you get here. You notice how buttery smooth it is while scrolling, opening apps and running animations.

The new screen is also brighter and yet more battery-efficient than previous models thanks to something Samsung is calling Eco2 display technology. Great for indoor and outdoor use.

It’s even useful when closed, with a new cover screen that is almost twice the size of the previous models’. It’s 1.9-inches and allows you to see your notifications at a glance; change your music; check your steps and more.

In the same way that a smartwatch can give you a clue whether you need to open your device or not, the cover screen does the same.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G: not just for nerds

I get it. It’s a folding phone. In a sea of black rectangles, it’s a little bit different. The newest Z Flip model, however, is designed for everyone.

It’s thinner than ever at just 1.7cm closed, making it super pocketable; it has a range of new colourways that you’ll actually love to look at, and it’s just so damn practical.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this is the first foldable phone that I feel the non-tech savvy crowd will love. It’s a folding phone that doesn’t take any extra effort to get used to. The gimmick has faded away into something really useful for the everyday user.

It’s a big phone when you need it, and a small phone when you don’t. It has a camera that makes every pic look good without having to mess around with settings (although you can if you like); and it just does everything you’d want a flagship smartphone to do.

It’s a smart design, and one that is really going to win a lot of everyday fans. Speaking of design, it’s also meant to go everywhere with you, and not handled with kid gloves. The glass is stronger thanks to Gorilla Glass Victus, and the internal screen is more scratch resistant than previous models.

The whole frame is also reinforced with Samsung’s Armour Aluminium, so you don’t have to worry about snapping it when flipping your phone shut like a 90’s TV icon.

The cameras are more than sufficient, with a dual-lens camera system for your wide and ultra-wide shots, and the internal camera is a healthy 10-megapixels for your meetings, selfies and quick ‘fit checks.

Speaking of the camera, check out a little of what it can do:

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G: what’s in the box?

To keep the new devices a little more green, Samsung isn’t bundling a charger in the box this year.

The device charges via USB-C, so you do get a USB-C to USB-C cable shipped in the box, but no charger. Nor is there a pair of bundled headphones. Samsung assumes that by this point you have headphones and a charging plug you prefer using anyway, and by not making them it’s being more environmentally friendly.

Elsewhere in the box, you’re getting your How To manuals, and the all-important SIM Ejector Tool. Try not to lose this one!
