The Newcastle Knights have taken out the award for the 2018 Telstra NRL ‘Most streamed team’ at this year’s Dally M Awards ceremony.
In just its second year, the award recognises the team that had the highest number of viewers streaming their matches using the Telstra Live Pass on the NRL Official App across the entire home and away regular season.
To claim the distinction, the Knights – watched by a cumulative audience of 1.7 million fans throughout the season – had to fend of challenges from last year’s winning team, the Manly Sea Eagles, as well as the New Zealand Warriors and Melbourne Storm, who all made the top four.
The Warriors’ run into the final-four places was aided in no small part to playing in the year’s most streamed game – their round seven home clash against the St. George Illawarra Dragons.
Telstra’s multi-sport Live Passes currently deliver year-round action to 2.3 million subscribers – a 92% increase on last year – allowing eligible Telstra mobile customers access to matches live, fast, and data-free.
The NRL Official App delivered almost 400 million minutes of exciting rugby league action to a fan base that grew by an incredible 60 per cent this year.
In the battle of the states, rugby league fans in New South Wales can claim bragging rights over their Queensland rivals both on and off the pitch this year, with just over half of all streams being consumed within the blue state.
Queensland led Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, and the ACT for the minor places, but promisingly for the expansion of the game nationally, there is good interest in rugby league mobile streaming coast-to-coast.
Presenting the Award to Knight’s Captain, Mitchell Pearce, was Telstra Head of Marketing, Jeremy Nicholas.
“This great growth really has a lot to do with how close many of the games were this year, and how they were decided in the final moments of the match,” he said.
“We’re always looking at new ways to engage fans and customers who love rugby league, and when we can, provide them with unforgettable experiences like attending the Grand Final in person.
“The demand for streaming on the go is unparalleled, and we are committed to continuing to bring games to life in more places, live, fast, and data-free, on Australia’s best mobile network.”
