This year, like many Aussies, I’m heading out of town and away from the city lights to enjoy a holiday down by the beach. My family and I are heading to the coastal town of Anglesea, where we’ll celebrate New Years and lap up all the joy that the Great Ocean Road region has to offer.

But even as I’m switching off, I like to know that I can still connect with friends and family at home and abroad.

It seems that I’m not alone, as over the holiday period Telstra Mobile Network data traffic is set to increase by 30 per cent, meaning many of us will be sharing pictures, video, texts and checking social media more than we have done any year before!

We’re also expecting more people to pick up their phone and make a call, with a 10 per cent increase expected in voice calling. My wife will be checking in with her family in New Zealand and that will be just one of an expected 175 million calls made over our mobile and fixed networks. Believe it or not, 57 million of those calls are expected to take place on Christmas Eve alone!

Network traffic will peak with a 300% increase between 11pm and 1am on NYE

No matter how you choose to connect with friends and family this festive season, I’d like to wish you a safe and happy New Year.
