Five years ago, we started including a new type of allowance in our mobile plans – mobile data!
Back then not even the most prescient amongst us could have imagined how useful the mobile web and ‘appification’ of everything would make our mobiles.
Now, the mobile web is as important to our daily smartphone experience as voice and text.
It’s so vital that many of you tell us that from time to time you find yourselves using more data in a month than your plan allowance caters for.
Traditionally, when this happens additional data use is charged at excess data rates – which some of you have told us can be a hassle to track.
Introducing Extra Data
That’s why on 12 May we’re introducing Extra Data – a new feature that allows you to farewell your existing excess data charges by opting in to receive automatic top ups in 1GB blocks whenever you exceed your monthly data allowance.
Each block of 1GB (or part thereof) is charged at a flat rate of $10.
Of course, if you don’t use any additional data in a month, you won’t be charged for Extra Data.
It gives you the choice to replace your existing run on data rates and the freedom to use additional data when you want it without having to add a data pack.
And if you want to continue to share, stream and download once you’ve reached your plan allowance, you can do so without having to worry about unexpected data charges or contacting us to add a data pack.
Uniquely, we’re making Extra Data available to all of our existing consumer smartphone, tablet and mobile broadband customers on a plan and eligible business customers – not just people signing up to new plans.
Giving you unmatched confidence
Extra Data will work together with our real-time data alerts to offer you unmatched protection from surprise bills.
We SMS you in real-time when you have used 50 per cent, 85 per cent and 100 per cent of your included data allowance on consumer post-paid plans – so you’re always in the know. Mobile data usage alerts dispatched by other mobile operators in Australia are typically delayed by up to 48 hours.
How it works and how to get it
In May, if you’re on an eligible mobile, tablet and mobile broadband plan we will contact you directly about Extra Data and explain how you can opt in via the Telstra 24×7® App or by heading online.
Once the feature is applied, you will automatically receive an Extra Data top up of 1GB for $10 when you go over your plan allowance, giving you the flexibility to continue using mobile data. You will be are sent an SMS or email alert each time you receive an Extra Data top up, so you’re always in the know.
At the end of the billing month your allowance any unused Extra Data that has been applied will expire and you will go back to your month data allowance.
So that’s Extra Data. We hope it will allow you to focus on the things you really love about using your mobile on our network – like streaming, sharing, browsing and connecting in more places.
