At Telstra we are always looking to provide our customers with choice. This includes looking into new technology and mobile operating systems currently being developed.

At the moment there are four main players in the mobile operating system market, Apple iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.  With the rise of smartphone usage in Australia and around the world, new providers of mobile operating systems are emerging.

In recent months, we have been working with the industry to evaluate new mobile operating systems currently being developed. This ensures that we stay at the forefront of new technology developments and continue to provide our customers with the best of what the market has to offer. Two technologies we have been looking at most recently are FireFox OS and Ubuntu. While there are no specific plans regarding devices yet, engaging closely with industry ensures we are at the forefront of any future developments.

Ubuntu Touch brings the popular Linux based OS to phone and tablet and with it unique gesture based interface which utilises swiping in from the four different edges of the screen that will let users switch apps and search for content.

We have recently signed up to the Ubuntu Carrier Advisory Group, so we can work with Canonical, the team behind Ubuntu, and other mobile operators globally to help define and shape Ubuntu’s mobile strategy.

Firefox OS

Created by Mozilla, the team behind the popular Firefox browser, the Firefox OS is a web based platform designed to allow HTML5 applications to communicate directly with the device hardware.

Firefox’s OS design is simple with an intuitive interface. The platform is initially aimed at lower-cost devices however we are evaluating the Mozilla and our device manufacturer partners’ roadmap for Firefox OS in the future.

We look forward to continually examining the new offerings in the market and continue to bring our customers the best choice of products on Australia’s largest and most reliable mobile network.
