The dual screen pipe dream is finally a reality! We went hands-on with LG’s newest smartphone, which not only packs in speedy 5G capabilities, but a folding dual-screen design to make your multi-tasking dreams come true.
It’s called the LG V50 ThinQ™ 5G, and it’s the first 5G smartphone to come out of LG. The V50 ThinQ has a brand new camera, speaker and performance gear aplenty, but the real party piece is its screens. That’s right: both of them.
Out of the box, the V50 packs in a primary 6.4-inch QHD+ OLED FullVision display. In addition, it comes with a dual screen case, which allows you to connect a second 6.2-inch OLED display for double your screen fun. The dual screen phone folds up into a single, sleek 183-gram device that easily fits in your pocket for entertainment, gaming and productivity on the go. Don’t worry about spoiling the line of your outfit, however: the V50 pops out of its dual-screen case to become a thin, sleek, single screen flagship.
The two screens work together to provide true multi-tasking to users on the go. Speaking at the Australian launch event, Angus Jones, LG Australia’s Marketing GM said that he’d spoken to a number of customers about their use cases.
One ride-sharing driver said he’d be able to use two transport platforms at once with the phone in order to score more passengers throughout his shift. Another said they’d be able to use the device as a way to watch movies on the train whilst simultaneously checking emails and social networks.
We got a look at how the dual screen tech works as a virtual game controller for everything from the pre-loaded Fortnite to Sonic the Hedgehog.
Powering the new flagship is the Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB of RAM. Onboard storage is a tidy 128GB and those wanting more will welcome support for microSD cards up to a whopping 2TB. All that is figuratively cool, but keeping the tech literally cool requires a bit of know-how. That’s why LG has also fitted the handset with a heat dissipation system to keep the internal temps low and the device ticking over efficiently, even when playing mobile games over Telstra’s 5G network*.
And those after great sound needn’t want for a thing with the new LG – with stereo boombox speakers tuned by Meridian and an incredible DAC for audiophiles when plugging in headphones – a first on a smartphone.
The LG V50 ThinQ™ 5G goes on sale through Telstra from 11 June. Stay tuned to Telstra Exchange for an in-depth look at the handset ahead of launch day!
