Have you ever gone travelling overseas with your iPhone and forgotten to get it unlocked before you left? Judging by the response to this blog post from last May, my guess is the answer is ‘yes’ for a lot of people reading this blog.
Thankfully Danielle’s blog showed us how to fix the problem by calling Telstra to unlock your iPhone – problem solved! Well yes, but it can still take a few days to kick in, and I know it’s the last thing I’d want to do while I’m on holidays.
Looking at this blog, and the 200,000+ calls last year we receive from customers wanting to unlock their iPhones, we realised we needed a better solution.
So when we launched the iPhone 5s and 5c last month, for the first time, we worked with Apple to make sure we were able to sell the handsets already unlocked. Now we’ve teamed up again and managed to automatically unlock the iPhone 5.
This means, if you own an iPhone 5 on a plan with Telstra and you’re heading overseas, or switching network providers, you no longer need to call us or go through the steps Danielle’s outlined. You just put in the new SIM, verify your iTunes details and you’re good to go.
Judging by the response to our last unlocking blog, I think this is going to save a lot of time and hassle for a lot of people.
Unlocking iPhone 4s (and earlier models) on a plan
You can follow the instructions found on this blog to unlock your iPhone using our Post-Paid iPhone unlocking tool. There is no cost associated with unlocking a Post-Paid phone. You do not need to be a current Telstra customer to use this tool, however it can only unlock Post-Paid iPhone devices purchased from Telstra.
Pre-Paid iPhone customers
You may need to pay an iPhone unlocking fee by either calling our Pre-Paid Unlocking Centre or visiting a Telstra store. Instructions can be found online. You will then be transferred to the iPhone Unlocking Centre who will submit the unlock request for your iPhone after verifying the unlocking fee has been paid. Once the request has been processed you will need to follow the above instructions for iTunes unlocking.
