Making the decision to move to Australia over a year ago was a great step for my career, and it has been an incredible journey since joining Telstra last December.

Before joining I followed Telstra’s career website, getting to know about the interesting programs and opportunities the company offers. One opportunity stood out – the Business Technology Services (BTS) Academy program.

This three-year academy-style program makes use of on-the-job learning with exposure to projects using different platforms and technologies. Not only has this approach helped me focus on the areas I need to develop, it has enhanced my previous IT experience with presentation, communication and broader technical skills.

The BTS Academy offers an array of workshops set in an open environment where you can discuss and engage with others. Each workshop has been uniquely designed to focus on developing your weak points and discovering your strong points. One particular workshop that has changed the way I approach problems is design thinking – and I intend to use it fully as my career progresses.

The workshops are part of a 70:20:10 model where 20 percent involve instructor-led training and 70 percent is on-job training. As part of the program, I have also had the opportunity to be involved in an ‘action learning project’ where I managed a project for one of our customers from beginning to end, which has helped me to learn about project management, time management and stakeholder engagement.

I have felt encouraged and supported, and I especially appreciate the monthly assessments which provide me with constructive feedback.

I recently attained Certified Technologist status from the Australian Computer Society and will continue through the program for the next 2.5 years. I am particularly looking forward to gaining more consulting experience and working on customer projects, as well as learning more about emerging technologies like software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NFV).

Once I finish the Academy my goal is to take on a role as a Network Engineer.

I now understand why people take pride in working for Telstra – the flexibility, values, opportunities, recognition and the way gender diversity is embraced are important ingredients in helping me to shape my future. And being part of the BTS Academy has been the icing on the cake.
