When businesses disrupt an industry, it’s rarely one that has stayed the same for over 1500 years. But that’s exactly what Scoot Boots, the 2018 Telstra Tasmanian Business of the Year, is doing by developing unique hoof boots that are so lightweight they’re a horse’s dream.

Creator and co-founder of Scoot Boots, Dave MacDonald, worked with horses as a trainer and farrier for 30 years before designing and launching an innovative product to allow horses to forgo the steel shoe.

Changing 1500 years of tradition, the Scoot Boot allows horses to effectively go barefoot, which he says is much more suitable to their overall health. The boots are designed to protect a horse’s hooves in any weather without impeding its movements.

Since launching in 2015, the Scoot Boot has attracted a growing share of a rapidly emerging global market, reaching over 400 stockists worldwide.

The business has just been named the 2018 Telstra Tasmanian Business of the Year, also picking up the Emerging & Energised Award, at a dinner held at the Glen Albyn Estate in Hobart last night.

“It just goes to show things can be done from Tassie. We’re isolated here, we’ve got a lot of water between us and the mainland but anybody who’s got a bit of a dream can go forth from Tassie,” said Dave MacDonald.

The judges were impressed with the passion and determination demonstrated by Scoot Boots to rapidly grow the business globally, never failing to believe in the superiority and appeal of the product despite setbacks.

Scoot Boots won amongst 16 other finalists, and on the night, we also celebrated two other high-performing businesses, recognised as category winners of the 2018 Telstra Tasmanian Business Awards:

  • 2018 Telstra Tasmanian Small & Succeeding Award winner: Find Your Feet Australia: A multi-faceted independent company that is inspiring the community to enjoy an outdoors lifestyle and ‘find their feet’, by providing an exceptional retail experience and quality education.
  • 2018 Telstra Tasmanian Social Change Maker Award winner: Cancer Council Tasmania: With over nine Tasmanians a day receiving a cancer diagnosis, Cancer Council Tasmania is focused on its mission to minimise the impact and incidence of cancer on all Tasmanians.

The Telstra Business Awards are an exclusive platform to help businesses thrive in the future, by providing recognition, trusted advice and by opening their doors to an exclusive network.

The program recognises the best in business across four categories: Emerging and Energised, Small and Succeeding, Medium and Making Waves, and Social Change Maker.

All 2018 Tasmanian winners will join other state and territory category winners at the national 2018 Telstra Australian Business Awards in Melbourne on Thursday, 20 September 2018.
