The Royal Children’s Hospital means a lot to me. After the tragic loss of our son Finnan to Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), my wife Alisa and I co-founded the charity Finnan’s Gift to help the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Royal Children’s Hospital as they fight in the battle against CHD.

The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation’s major fundraising opportunity (when it receives almost half of all its donations) is its’ annual Good Friday Appeal, which brings together people from all parts of the community to raise funds for equipment, research and education.

To give you just a tiny snapshot of the incredible work the Royal Children’s Hospital does, in 2012–13 it:

  • had more than 77,695 children attend its Emergency Department
  • held 241,822 specialist clinic appointments
  • performed 11,833 surgeries
  • had more than 36,240 children stay overnight

This year’s appeal takes place this Friday, 25 March and there are a number of events running throughout the day, the biggest being the Kids Day Out and Good Friday Appeal Night Show.

At the Kids Day Out, Telstra has teamed up with The Brainary to bring two interactive humanoid NAO robots for the kids to meet and play with. The NAO robots are at the cutting edge of robotic technology and can mimic human behaviour to walk, talk, dance and even do Tai Chi! Kids love interacting with them and they are a great introduction to the wonders of science.

Telstra has also been the telecommunications provider for the Good Friday Appeal for the last 60 years, and we recently committed to helping this special event for the next five years. This means that as part of the Good Friday Appeal Night Show, our team has come up with a solution to deliver the 300 phone lines and the ‘SMS to donate solution’ (powered by Whispir), needed for the event. Last year, we connected over 25,000 calls during the telecast, which helped to raise over $17 million.

This year we want to beat all of last year’s records – we’re hoping to see 100,000 people at the Kids Day Out, and even bigger fundraising numbers. So please head down to the Kids Day Out and stop by to see the NAO robots, support the cause via the telethon (1300 277 325) or go online and help us raise donations and awareness for all the incredibly worthy work that the wonderful people at the Royal Children’s Hospital do every year for our kids.
