Dialling up the festive spirit with free calls for Christmas

Christmas is an inherently social occasion. There are family gatherings to host, work parties to attend and Christmas shopping trips to plan. In fact, there’s usually so much going on that sending season’s greetings to the people who matter most often takes the form of a quick text message or social media post nowadays.
So, this Christmas, we’re using the power of our national network to help the country make a more meaningful connection – by gifting our customers with free calls and Wi-Fi for the festive period. While texts and instant messages are super convenient ways to communicate, nothing quite beats the emotional connection that comes with hearing the sounds of a loved one’s voice.
Which is why, from 24 to 26 December, we’ll be offering free local and national calls, plus standard calls to mobiles, from Telstra home phones and our 16,000+ payphones located across the country. Plus, Australians will also be able to hook up to free Wi-Fi at selected Telstra Air public hotspots.
This not only gives those separated by distance or circumstance even more ways to get in touch with one another this festive season, but it also hopes to break down social barriers for some of our most disadvantaged communities.
We’ve partnered with The Salvation Army for this year’s initiative – to spread the message about the free calls and support their mission of bringing hope to those in need.
While Christmas is regularly dubbed the most wonderful time of year, for those facing personal hardships, such as homelessness, it can actually be one of the most difficult and lonely.
In these cases, the sense of connectedness provided by a phone or video call can be invaluable in combatting feelings of isolation. Yet, according to The Salvation Army, there are many people out there who find themselves without access to the technology or the financial means to make those conversations possible.
Opening up our national networks gives everyone in the country – regardless of their personal situation – the chance to connect this Christmas. And with last year’s initiative resulting in more than 271,000 payphone calls made, we’re hoping that 2017 will see more than ten times this number of calls made country-wide.
