Cyclone Yasi Update No 6

Telstra News

Telstra’s mobile network in North Queensland is almost back to full operation with only five sites to be restored. We are focused on restoring these mobile sites at Forest Beach, Mount Poverty, Murray Springs, Picnic Bay and Wujal Wujal.

Since yesterday, a further 7,100 landline services have been restored in areas affected by the Cyclone, with around 11,700 still to be restored. A further 6,000 ADSL broadband services have also been restored, with just over 4,800 remaining to be brought back online. The number of services awaiting restoration has declined due to further power and restoration works at Mena Creek and Airlie Beach. We are continuing to work on restoring services at Cardwell and Yungaburra.

Today’s focus continues to be on restoring more mobile sites and on repairing damaged roadside cabinets and pillars to get more landline and broadband customers connected. Also, we will start restoring services on Dunk Island today.

Despite a significant improvement in the restoration of our landline network, some customers in restored areas may still have faults where the equipment in or around their home or business has been damaged.

We currently have a large number of customer-reported faults in North Queensland, however we have 300 Telstra staff on the ground working to get more of our customers reconnected. We ask our customers to be patient during this time and want them to know we are working as hard to clear as many faults as possible.

Many faults are power related, so when power is returned to our network or to an area, customers should see their service restored.

To report a fault:

• Residential: 13 22 03
• Telstra Business customers: 13 29 99
• Telstra Enterprise and Government customers: 1800 730 062

Assistance to our customers:

We announced an assistance package for our residential and small business customers impacted by Cyclone Yasi. The package provides practical assistance with phone services including: free call diversions, home line call rates from one mobile phone per house, a $50 credit for mobile customers who do not have a fixed line, and the holding of customer phone numbers and email addresses. For more information, visit the About Telstra Media Centre.
