With more mains power being turned on in the last 24 hours, we have seen a further reduction in the number of affected landline services from 67,000 yesterday to 44,000 currently. In addition, we have had a reduction in the number of mobile towers without service from 87 yesterday to 56 today. Our mobile network is operating well, as impacted sites often have overlapping coverage. The number of affected landline and mobile sites will vary due to power, access and damage.
Townsville and Ayr have had some mains power restored which is anticipated to result in further restoration of landline services in those areas. Services at Magnetic Island were restored by way of generator yesterday afternoon.
The number of network sites in the region without mains power has reduced from 410 to 313. We have increased the number of priority site being supported by generators to more than 80.
We expect to see further improvements in restoration with more mains power being returned to areas affected by the Cyclone.
Even though we are seeing more main power being turned on, the lack of power in many areas continues to be our main challenge in restoring services to our customers. There has been a large reduction in the number of inaccessible ‘red zones’ which means our crews will be working hard to restore and repower as many sites and services as possible.
We have announced an assistance package for our residential and small business customers in the region. The package provides practical assistance with phone services including: free call diversions, home line call rates from one mobile phones per house, a $50 credit for mobile customers who do not have a fixed line, and the holding of customer phone numbers and email addresses.
