Whether you love playing detective, enjoy the thrill of a suspenseful scene or are fascinated by the minds of killers, there’s not much better than a well-made crime series. Here’s a selection of some of the best new shows to drop on Telstra TV.
The Looming Tower (BigPond Movies)
Based on real events from the 1990s, this thrilling new series follows the rising threat of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the lead-up to 9/11. The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels leads a brilliant cast in his role as John O’Neill, the Chief of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Centre. Placing a big focus on the dangerous rivalry between his team and the CIA, The Looming Tower on BigPond Movies is both informative and addictive as it gives us a deeper insight into a dark era of American history.
Filling the Breaking Bad-shaped hole in many people’s lives, season two of this popular Netflix Original promises more darkness and twists than ever before. If you’re new to Ozark, the show follows Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a financial planner who’s forced on-the-run with his family after getting tangled in a money-laundering scheme. Tasked with moving $500 million for a Mexican drug lord, the series traces Marty’s struggle to stay alive while dealing with the dynamics of two teenage children and a stale marriage.
Mr. Mercedes (Foxtel Now)
Fans of Stephen King’s entertainingly dark novels will love this adaption of Mr. Mercedes (Foxtel Now) starring Brendan Gleeson as retired detective, Bill Hodges. After being haunted by the unsolved case of a man who fatally plunged his Mercedes at sixteen people, the focus is turned on Bill as the young psychopath re-emerges online through several e-mails. Embarking on a dangerous crusade, the calmness of retirement is very quickly swept away and replaced with terror.
The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair on Stan follows Harry Quebert, a literary icon, who suddenly finds himself indicted for murder after the body of a young girl is found buried on his property. When a friend and mentee goes digging in Quebert’s past to try to defend his innocence, he uncovers a series of dark secrets from underage relationships to toxic family households. Starring Patrick Dempsey in a role like you’ve never seen him before, this breathtaking new series will keep you guessing until the very end.
Criminal Minds (7Plus)
Onto its thirteenth season, Criminal Minds on 7Plus is showing no signs of slowing down as one of the world’s most popular crime series. Following an elite squad of profilers and psychology specialists, the show delves into the mind of some of the most twisted serial killers.
