You may remember if you read my blogs here, I love to walk. I’m also a big fan of Android and the apps  made for this operating system. I recently purchased an iPod Touch but that’s another blog.

Brendan's Endomondo StatsBefore Christmas I decided as part of my New Year’s Resolutions that I would walk more and find a way to 1. motivate me to do that and 2. to document my progress somehow.

Presenting Endomondo Sports Tracker for Android. I use it most days except on the odd occasion when I have to catch a bus to the train station due to appalling weather or if I forget to turn GPS before I start the app.

With Endomondo on your phone, you can track your running, cycling and other sports. It’s fun, it’s social and it’s motivating.

Endomondo Sports Tracker can be used for recording all kinds of sporting activity and I’ve also used it a few times for biking.

I like the fact that I can turn it on and forget about it while I’m doing my exercise or do the opposite and set a time or distance goal and try to beat it each day.

I love the social sharing for facebook, I use this to motivate myself to be consistant thinking friends will notice any gaps in my performance. (I guess they probably don’t).

There’s also a nifty feature that you can enable in the app so it will talk to you and announce when you’ve reached certain targets.

As the screen shots show, the app records all sorts of information about my exercise (eg time, speed, distance, route, calories)

If you find this kind of thing appealing, I suggest you jump right in with the Endomondo free version and if it works for you upgrade to the Endomondo Sports Tracker PRO for AU $3.96.

Although I have racked up some 58KM since starting, I did find it a bit of a shock that an average 1.65 km morning walk that takes 16 minutes only burns about 108 kcal. Considering the average calorie count for Spaghetti Pasta is 310, to make more of a difference, I need to walk after work  and sometimes during the day which I’ve just started to do last week.
