When I was a young boy growing up in Adelaide I used to love riding my bike. I would let my mum know I was heading out for a few hours and then spend most of the day just riding around the suburbs.

Back then there was no Internet and my mother preferred if I was out riding a bike rather than watching the television. It is what kids did back then.

And it seems many people have kept up their passion for cycling.

For two young men from Melbourne, who have been best friends since they were five, it was their passion for bikes that led them to create an online business.

That was in 2007. Who would have known that as you cycle through the years to 2012 these two best friends would have their business idea recognised as the 2012 Telstra Australian Business of the Year?

Well that has come true for Jason Wyatt and Sam Salter who have been named the 2012 Telstra Australian Business of the Year for their business BikeExchange.com.au.

And as observed by BikeExchange.com.au Managing Director Jason, cycling is as popular as ever, particularly with people who work in the corporate world: “We’re lucky bikes are the new golf,” Jason said at the Business Awards.

From a simple idea of providing a platform for bike shop owners to sell their goods and services to cycling enthusiasts, this business has grown from the excitement and dedication of all who work there.

Being an online business supporting retail, Jason Wyatt from BikeExchange.com.au had some observations regarding the current trend towards online shopping

He said giving up and being defeatist is the wrong approach. “You need a glass half full approach,” Jason said.

“If you don’t have an online strategy in retail you need to get one,” he said.

“We love what we do and we do what we love,” Jason said as he accepted the Award.

BikeExchange.com.au was also recognised as the 2012 MYOB Small Business of the Year.

Other winning businesses on the night were:

  • Sitemed (SA) – 2012 HTC Start-Up Award;
  • Shima Wasabi (TAS) – 2012 News Limited Micro Business Award;
  • UON (WA) – 2012 Commonwealth Bank Medium Business Award;
  • John Nitschke Drilling (SA) – 2012 Telstra Regional Business Award.

Congratulations to all the businesses involved in this year’s Telstra Business Awards. Nominations are already open for the 2013 Telstra Business Awards
