From documentaries and true-crime investigations to exciting spy films, viewers have become familiar with popular TV and movie templates. If you feel like something that pushes the boundaries beyond these genres, here’s a selection of our favourite spoofs that add a sprinkle of parody to your TV viewing. And you can stream them all on Telstra TV tonight.
American Vandal (Netflix)
There are few shows as popular as true-crime right now, and this Netflix series puts a hilariously satirical twist on the genre. The show follows the backlash from a vandalism prank targeted at high school teachers as a student is expelled for the crime. Playing the role of detective, an aspiring filmmaker and respected sophomore investigates the controversial penalty handed down, leading viewers to doubt the real culprit until the very end. Stream it on Telstra TV.
With an influx of reality dating shows hitting our screens, viewers around the world can’t seem to get enough drama. Cue Telstra TV. Ridiculously funny and surprisingly dark, UnREAL deep-dives into the twisted tactics of TV producers to ensure a drama-packed series. Following the well-known template of The Bachelor, the ‘Everlasting’ contestants search for their ideal partner, all while the crew members tackle their own highly complicated love lives behind-the-scenes.
Jane the Virgin (Foxtel Now)
We’re all pretty familiar with soap operas, and this laugh-out-loud comedy/drama blatantly mocks the telenovela format, all while leaving viewers gasping to uncover the next inevitable plot twist. The story begins with Jane, a devout virgin, being accidentally inseminated with a specimen meant for another patient. And, as the sperm donor turns out to be her boss, her beautifully planned life is suddenly turned upside down with a string of almost-unbelievable events.
The Mascots (Netflix)
For professional athletes, there are a few stand-out competitions that are considered the highest honour to win. In the case of this Telstra TV Netflix parody, a handful of team mascots showcases their surprisingly competitive world as they chase the most prestigious award in their industry: the Gold Fluffy. With a bunch of strong personalities, side-splitting one-liners, and highly colourful costumes, The Mascots is the perfect fun film for a night in on the couch.
Johnny English: Reborn (BigPond Movies)
It’s been fourteen years since his last adventure, and now the most unlikely intelligence officer in the Secret Service is facing his greatest challenge ever. Johnny English, played by the brilliant Rowan Atkinson, must stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and cause global chaos. Mimicking the format of typical spy films, this action-packed sequel has the right blend of slapstick comedy, quality special effects and big stars.
Parks and Recreation (Stan)
With one of our favourite ladies in comedy at the helm of this cult favourite, Parks and Recreation is a must-watch comedy. The series follows Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope, a bureaucrat in an Indiana Parks and Recreation Department, who attempts to beautify her town. After converting an abandoned construction site into a community park, Knope has to face the wrath of disgruntled neighbours, governmental red tape and hilarious, yet exploitative, colleagues.
