Virtual reality (VR) is tipped to be one of the hottest tech gifts this Christmas. And right on cue Google has released its new DayDream View VR headset. The best news is if you purchase any Pixel, phone by Google, from Telstra before 25 December you can score one free. Here’s what to look forward to.

The headset itself is lightweight and breathable meaning it’s great for long form viewing and even with just a single strap feels very secure when you wear it. One thing that’s quite unique to DayDream is its controller, which helps you swipe across the screen, select items, go back home and re-centre your view as needed. When using it with different apps it transforms into a pointer, a bat or even a wand depending on what the app you’re using requires.

In fact, what really makes or breaks a VR experience is the content and with an ever-growing collection of apps, games and video you’ll have plenty to choose from. New featured content front and centre so there’s always something fresh when you put on your headset so here are my picks for the ones you need to try first:

YouTube

The Verge describes this as Daydream’s killer app and they’re not wrong. One of the best things about it is that you can tap into a wide range of content creators who are producing immersive videos such as ColleeHumour, Tastemade and UnboxTherapy.

Google Arts & Culture

Want to see Vincent Van Goh’s landscapes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art? Don’t live in New York? No problem, DayDream View can take you there with the Google Arts and Culture app. It gives you the ability to step inside a virtual gallery and view masterpieces from over 50 world-renowned museums allowing you to zoom in to see brushstroke- level details.

Google Maps

Travel the world from the comfort of your living room with Google Street view on VR. Explore some of the world’s most breathtaking destinations including the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal allowing DayDream’s controller to guide you around.

Fantastic Beasts

Harry Potter fans take note. This game, created by Warner Brothers, lets you enter into a new era of magic with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in an immersive virtual reality experience. You’ll be able to interact with beasts, complete spells and explore the Wizarding World. You can actually test this one out in our stores to see what it’s like!

VR Karts

No gaming experience would be complete without some kind of racing game and VR Karts which with its bright colours and quirky characters will have you racing through stunning environments, collecting power-ups and battling for first place.
