I’m not an addictive person by nature. There are two things, however, that have got their grip on me: coffee and smartphone games.

The first I have pretty much under control, but the second… well, the second won’t let go.

There’s a lot I would forgo for a couple more plays; the most notable, of course, being sleep.

And we’re all addicted, because Candy Crush creators are doing so well they filed for IPO in New York yesterday. Suddenly the business of throwaway apps just got serious.

Therefore it seems timely to share my Top 5 pocket gaming gems (that aren’t Candy Crush) that will have you tapping away at 1 am for just one last round, honey.

Threes (iOS)

Threes has quickly gained itself a reputation with its straightforward concept, beautiful design and snazzy music. The rules are simple: combine boxes to make arrangements of three. But while it sounds basic, the game is quietly complicated. Not sure what to do? Just read these tips for playing Threes before embarking on this habit.

Monsters Ate My Condo (iOS and Android)

Monsters Ate My Condo

This tower building game sees four monsters on a hangry rampage unless you feed them, which is actually what my boyfriend calls Sunday brunch with my friends. Except unlike me and my friends, these monsters eat high-rise floors. This super colourful and fast-paced game is not for the faint of heart. But it you can deal, it’s worth it.

Ski Safari (iOS and Android)

Ski Safari

Ski Safari is one of the few endless runners I actually enjoy. You play as Sven, a poor skier who has found himself on the run from an avalanche. As a competitive person, the thing I love about this game is the tasks. These need to be completed to climb higher levels and I MUST. BEAT. EVERY. TASK. Plus there’s an Adventure Time version. Radical!

Flappy Bird (RIP)

Flappy Bird

Oh Flappy Bird, how you wooed us in your short lived life. If you haven’t already downloaded Flappy Bird, I’m afraid to say it’s too late. Unless you have a spare 100k, that is. Flappy Bird was the app sensation where users tried to get a little bird through Mario-style pipes. It was impossibly hard and everyone hated it, but no one could stop playing it either. In fact, the game garnered so much attention that the creator removed the game from the App and Play stores, despite earning a bucket load from in-app ads. If you can get your hands on it, give it a go! But I can’t promise you won’t want to smash your phone within three minutes.

Bejeweled (iOS and Android)

No list of addictive smartphone games would be complete without the classic time stealer, Bejeweled. Such is the power of Bejeweled that it’s been downloaded more than 150 million times and it’s what Candy Crush is based on. Personally, it got me through Europe. If you want to step it up a notch, try Bejeweled Blitz.

Are you addicted to any of these games? What other pocket gems do you love to play?
