Telstra decided to embark on an overland adventure with father and son team, Mark and Jake; the Toowoomba local franchisee’s of Blue Wheelers, one of Australia’s leading dog washing and grooming services… on wheels!

Starting from their home, Mark, Jake and their trusty mobile salon travelled more than 4,000km from Melbourne to Darwin, via Adelaide. At the many stops they made on the journey, the duo met the locals and groomed their four legged friends whilst visiting other Aussie small businesses to learn more about how they are using the Telstra Mobile Wi-Fi device. Below is their story.

Mark & Jake – Blue Wheelers

I have always believed that it is the journey not the destination that counted, and that was certainly the case with the Telstra Overland Office experience. The first thing that caught my attention about this was the adventure of driving through this vast land, the country, the people and the places.

The characters we bumped into along the track did not disappoint, like the Queenslander who runs the UFO centre of Australia, Wycliffe Well, the extraordinary Telstra customers we met; the lady whose company provides first aid for the mining industry or the small organisation in Alice Springs  providing training in remote areas for indigenous Australians. The guy I met giving life skills to the mentally challenged, all striving to improve the living standards of those they encounter. It was a privilege to say G’day and have a chat. Truly, this is what Australia is all about – people helping people, and Telstra is a partner to all of these people and more.

At the places we stopped on our journey, Jake and I both were able to connect via email with family back home using Telstra’s Mobile Wi-Fi device– so it was certainly interesting operating our business in some unusual places. We also used Mobile Wi-Fi to connect to a tablet at the places we visited to do the banking for Blue Wheelers.  It was vital that we had the Telstra Mobile Wi-Fi device to access to the internet at the many places we visited, given the various ways in which we wanted to document our travels and the need for us to keep our business running. The agenda for each day was sent to us via email at the start of each day before we hit the road, and at the end of the day when we got to stop at a new place we sat back and uploaded pictures on our social media pages and sent them to head office and back home – to keep them up to date with our adventure, both of us connecting to the same device.

The best part of my experience was watching my son Jake embrace the challenges before him and we soon realised it was not all beer and skittles. We had fun but we were also there to work, the vast distances between dog washes only added to the pressure.

Personally watching Jake wash a croc was a highlight for me and the first dog we washed, Bella was a true champion, showing grace under fire as we clipped, washed and photographed her in Melbourne’s 40 degree heat taking two hours – a real star.
