2018 is undoubtedly the year of the superhero, with Black Panther hitting cinemas and Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League available for home-entertainment. Embracing all things power, action and impressive super-human abilities, we’ve gathered our favourite shows and films that’ll make your evenings a little bit more magical.

Thor: Ragnarok (BigPond Movies)
After his huge success playing the almighty Thor, Australia’s very own Chris Hemsworth is back in this third instalment in the action-packed franchise. Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, he faces a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to save his universe as he knew it, promising loads of heart-racing scenes that’ll have you hooked.
Jessica Jones (Netflix)
Diving deep in the world of one of the darker Marvel characters, this fiery series follows the adventures of the beautiful and mysterious Jessica Jones. Making up part of the group of Defenders, Jessica’s career as a superhero sees her setting up her detective agency in New York City. The show, which is based on an adult graphic novel, touches on dealing with trauma, rage and finding good in a world surrounded by evil. With its second season now on Netflix, this is one to binge tonight.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (7Plus)
He’s been a recurring character in Marvel films like Iron Man, Thor and The Avengers, and now Phil Coulson leads his own elite team of fellow agents within a law-enforcement organization known as SHIELD. Responsible for investigating strange occurrences around the world, the team protects vulnerable citizens from inconceivable threats, including a highly dangerous and powerful group known as Hydra. You’ll love the intelligence and wit Coulson brings to the role, putting an entertaining twist on extraordinary events.
Marvel’s Runaways (Foxtel Now and BigPond Movies)
At one point in time, every teenager has thought their parents were ‘evil’, but for six American kids, this is actually the case. After the terrifying discovery that their parents are super-villains, the unlikely crew band together to stop their mums and dads from destroying the world. Created by the producer behind The O.C. and Gossip Girl, this action-packed Marvel series is perfect for young adults and the superheroes within us all.
Justice League (BigPond Movies)
The fifth, and highly anticipated, instalment of the DC Comics Extended Universe has just dropped, and this is one worth getting excited for. Combining forces with the world’s most powerful superheroes, Batman and Wonder Woman recruit a team of metahumans to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. With Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash coming along for the ride, you can guarantee a full 116 minutes of show-stopping action and terrific acting from the best in the game.
Black Lightning (Netflix)
Netflix’s latest series is jumping on the superhero trend, and follows ‘retired’ superhero and high school teacher, Jefferson Pierce. Ditching his impressive abilities nine years ago after seeing the negative impacts on his family, Pierce is forced to become a vigilante again when the rise of the local gang causes massive crime and corruption in his home town. With a slightly more modern take on the superhero genre, Black Lightning provides the perfect after-work escape.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 (BigPond Movies)
Following the sequel of the highly popular Guardians of the Galaxy, everyone’s favourite crew of heroes are determined to keep their newfound family together as they uncover the truth behind Peter Quill’s mysterious upbringing. With the entire film set to the sonic backdrop of a specially designed mixtape, you’ll love the combination of toe-tapping tunes, intense action scenes and witty lines that’ll have you chuckling throughout the film.
Legion (BigPond Movies)
If you suddenly developed superhero abilities, would you think you were going insane? This is the case for David Haller, a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But a strange encounter with a fellow patient confirms that the voices he hears might be real. You’ll love watching a ‘new’ superhero grappling with the mental stress of embracing his powers.
Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash (BigPond Movies)
Combining the brilliance of Lego with the powers of The Flash, this adorable animated film has the perfect blend of action and colour to keep your little ones entertained. Stuck in time loop that causes him to relive the same day over and over, The Flash must find a way to restore time to avoid losing his powers and being fired by the Justice League. This is an exciting race-against the clock that adults and kids alike will love watching.
Logan (BigPond Movies)
Set in the near future, this edgy take on the Wolverine series takes a deep-dive into the life of Logan (Hugh Jackman), who’s caring for an ailing Professor X somewhere on the Mexican border. But despite his attempts to hide from the world, a young mutant tracks him down pursued by dark forces, putting his entire legacy in jeopardy. Die-hard X-Men fans will love this intimate look into Wolverine’s future.
