What is eSIM?

It used to be that if you wanted two phone numbers, you’d have to carry around two devices or SIM cards. For example, if you have a phone or SIM card for work purposes, and one for personal. Not so with eSIM.

eSIM – or “Embedded SIM” to use its full moniker – sees a rewritable SIM card built into your device. That means you can effectively have two services at once in a single device without needing to change your SIM card.

You could connect two numbers to the one device at once and effectively manage personal and business use with a single smartphone. You can even use one service as a specific data SIM, with the other solely used for calls.

Most eSIM enabled devices also still have a traditional Physical SIM slot. This allows you freedom and flexibility as a customer, and setting it up is simple.

How do I use it?

Right now, eSIM is supported by Telstra via compatible devices from some of the world’s leading smartphone, tablet and wearable accessory manufacturers. Android smartphones are currently not supported. As more eSIM-compatible devices become available, we’ll bring them to you on Australia’s best network for quick and easy connectivity in more places than ever.

You can take up a new or existing post-paid mobile plan with an eSIM-compatible device at Telstra Stores, call centres, authorised resellers and via our Online Store. Once you receive your eSIM Card, follow these simple steps to get started:

  1. Turn your compatible device on and make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi
  2. Make sure you have the latest software

Use the camera on your device to scan the QR code in your eSIM Card. Then, follow the prompts on your screen. Or, you can do this manually in your iOS device settings:

  1. Go to Settings, tap Mobile and then Add Mobile Plan
  2. Scan the QR code in your eSIM Card and follow the prompts on your screen

Once you’ve set up your device, you’re ready to activate your Telstra service. If your service is already active, you can start using your new eSIM.

eSIM is truly changing the way we connect and do business around the world. It’s a new technology that allows you to get more out of your phone than ever before on our network and we’re excited to support it for our customers.
