- Jane is Telstra’s General Counsel, Intellectual Property. Jane’s IP team manages Telstra’s Trade Mark, Patent and Design Portfolios and provides strategic IP legal advice to Telstra’s Australian businesses, and its overseas subsidiaries and partners.
Jane has led Telstra’s submissions to the Australian government and other bodies and on a wide range of IP matters over many years, including the IP Chapter of the Australia/US Free Trade Agreement; Trade Mark Protection in Top Level Domains (gTLDs); Online copyright enforcement; Patent and Trade Mark Attorney Privilege; IP Chapters in FTAs; IP issues & the NBN; Copyright (Digital Agenda Act/Safe Harbours/Fair Use) and IP Australia’s ‘Raising the Bar’ Patent and Trade Mark Practice Reforms.
Jane has authored and co-authored a number of IP papers and regularly speaks at conferences on IP issues. Jane is a legal practitioner and registered Trade Mark Attorney. She’s a member of the Australian Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys and the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand. She is a former appointee to the federal government’s Advisory Council on Intellectual Property (ACIP) and a past president of the Australian industry IP body, AMPICTA.
Jane is a mentor in the Melbourne Law School and mentoring program and co-ordinates Telstra Legal Services’ community contribution projects.

Last Friday the High Court said ‘no’ to Optus’ special leave application, in relation to its Optus TV Now service. At Telstra, where growing both our Cloud and Media businesses are strategic priorities, we view the High Court’s decision as a positive one, both for the protection of intellectual property rights and for cloud computing – the decision provides welcome clarity for cloud operators, while at the same time recognises the delicate balance of interests which copyright law seeks to protect.
