Colonel Michael Reilly

  • Colonel Mick Reilly was born and educated in Victoria. After high school in Ballarat he graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1984 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. Colonel Reilly has held a range of appointments in both the Regular Army and Active Reserve, including infantry command and regimental postings in the Royal Australian Regiment and the Royal Queensland Regiment.

    In 2003 - 2004 he commanded the 31st Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment. He has also served in senior instructional, training staff and training development positions at Headquarters Training Command – Army, the Army School of Training Technology, and as the Deputy Commandant at the North Queensland Regional Training Centre.

    He has undertaken operational service as a platoon commander in Malaysia, company commander and Brigade staff officer in East Timor whilst part of the International Force in East Timor (INTERFET), and Executive Officer of the Australian Battalion (AUSBATT) during the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). He has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, including service as a Principle Staff Officer at Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. His recent postings have included the Chief of Staff and the Deputy Commander at Headquarters 11 Brigade, Townsville.

    Colonel Reilly holds a Bachelor's Degree in Arts (UNSW), a Graduate Diploma in Business (HRD) (Deakin Uni), a Master of Science (IS) (Florida State Uni) and other post-graduate qualifications. He is a Graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

    Colonel Reilly and his wife Margaret have a teenage daughter. His interests include a passion for sports, and he is an avid follower of Essendon in AFL, the Crocodiles in the NBL, and the Cowboys in NRL.

Messages to the Troops do make a difference

I received my first messages of support when serving with the 1999 INTERFET coalition forces in east Timor. I also received similar messages when on ANZAC Day at Al Minhad Air Base (United Arab Emirates) and Kandahar in April 2009. The messages were in a book I saw in the common room area in AL Minhad and the brew area in Kandahar.
