Australia trumps New York and Paris when it comes to national mobile broadband

Today’s a big day for mobile broadband in Australia with the launch of the Telstra BigPond Ultimate® USB to the wider consumer market. Previously only available to a small number of corporate and SME customers, the device is now out there across the Telstra Store and dealer network.

Up to twice as fast as Telstra’s current fastest Next G™ modem, and offering blistering speeds in Australia’s capital city CBDs (5km from GPO), associated airports, selected metropolitan hubs and more than 100 regional centres, the BigPond Ultimate® USB makes it easier than ever to access reliable internet while on the go*.

So what is this need for speed all about? In a nutshell, it can help remove the need for you to be in the office for the sake of high-speed internet, with mobile broadband speeds that can approach being on par with what you’d experience in the workplace. I don’t know about you, but I welcome the technology which means I can catch my son’s special presentation at assembly and not feel I’m dropping the ball with work.

Interestingly, Telstra invested in some research which seems I’m not alone in this belief – in fact, the study found increased flexibility is what a lot of Aussies are after. For example almost half of all working Australians are spending more time doing business outside the workplace than they were five years ago.

Plus, we also uncovered that this increase in mobile working has actually allowed people to spend more time with family and friends. Three quarters of respondents who work remotely say it has given them the ability to complete work and attend a personal occasion at the same time, rather than miss it.

In light of this, it’s pretty clear that technology – such as our new BigPond Ultimate® USB – can play a huge role in allowing Australians to work outside the office and embrace better work life balance.

And with typical download speeds ranging from 1.1Mbps to 20Mbps across Australia’s capital city CBDs (5km from GPO) and associated airports, selected metropolitan hubs and more than 100 regional centres*, we believe our new BigPond Ultimate® USB will really hit the sweet spot for a large number of our customers.

So for those who like the detail, the Telstra Ultimate® USB can be purchased in conjunction with a range of mobile broadband plans – including new 7GB and 12GB plans launched today. Check out here for more information.

Typical download speeds with the Telstra BigPond Ultimate® USB in all Capital CBD’s (5km from GPO) and selected metropolitan, regional and rural areas are from 1.1Mbps to 20Mbps. Outside the selected areas, the remaining metropolitan areas of all capitals cities and many other regional and rural locations support typical download speeds from 550kbps to 8Mbps, and elsewhere typical speeds are from 550kbps to 3Mbps. Actual speeds vary due to factors such as distance from the base station, local conditions, user numbers, hardware and software configuration, download source and other factors.

Can I ask Rebekah what the point is of having such great speed when your residential customers are limited to a miserly 12GB? All that it is going to do is mean we will burn through the quota faster.

Additionally why have a fast modem when the local tower is only capable of either 3.6mbps or 7.2mbps depending n where you are? Many rural and regional locations will see no benefit to any of this added speed, not that it is of any use anyway as again 12GB is a pathetic quota to limit wireless users to.

    Thanks

    GW

      Hi Gwymbox,
Just in regards to the network speed for the towers, just have a quick look at the mobile broadband coverage maps for your area and zoom all the way in. If its dark blue then your tower supports the typical speeds of 1.1 to 20 Mbps.
The device was originally released to rural and regional customers by the CEO through Telstra Country Wide and as part of this the rural and regional towers were updated to support the new technology.

      Hi Josh

I did check and we are only in the 3.6mbps coverage, hence why I asked when will we be able to get the full 21mbps speed

      Cheers

      GW

I’ve just changed my plan to take advantage of increased allowance & cheaper price – Thanks!!
But I’d like to know: why does my broadband account update hourly but phone data is about 5 days behind?
