Rule the galaxy with Australia’s second 4G smartphone

blog-samsung-galaxy-SII-4G-banner

The Samsung Galaxy SII smartphone won a lot of adoration for its stunning screen, lightning fast user interface and its distinct flat and thin design. It’s so good it has become one of Australia’s best-selling smartphones. So how do you top it? Simple: keep all the good bits and add 2012’s must-have feature – ultra-fast 4G connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy 4G SII smartphone

Tomorrow we’re launching the Samsung GALAXY S II 4G. It supercharges the SII experience by letting owners in 4G coverage areas surf the mobile internet at speeds that are up to five times faster than the SII. That means you can send, stream and surf at speeds that will blow you away.

Compared with its predecessor, SII 4G features a larger SuperAMOLED screen measuring in at 4.5-inches – great for watching streaming video on. It’s also powered by a higher-capacity 1.5GHz dual core processor which supports fast web browsing and easy switching between multiple apps, games and videos. It comes with a near field communication chip built in for NFC tag reading.

Looks wise, the Galaxy SII 4G stands out with a slim design – it’s just 10mm thick.

Multimedia functions include an 8 megapixel camera and 1080p full HD video recording. The phone also has a large battery capacity (1850mAh), Wi-Fi a/b/g/n support, and Bluetooth 3.0+HS. There’s HD Voice support built in too which enables crisper, clearer calls when chatting to other people with HD Voice compatible handsets on the Telstra Mobile Network.

Samsung Galaxy SII 4G runs the latest Android™ Gingerbread 2.3.6 operating system (upgradable to Android™ 4.0 in the future).

4G LTE speeds + Australia’s fastest 3G speeds in selected areas

Customers using the Samsung GALAXY S II 4G in 4G coverage areas (capital city CBDs, associated airports and more than 80 regional and metropolitan locations) can access typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps and typical upload speeds from 1Mbps to 10Mbps. When outside 4G coverage areas the Samsung GALAXY S II 4G uses HSPA+ Dual Channel technology to serve up Australia’s fastest 3G speeds so customers can enjoy super-fast 3G download speeds ranging from 1.1Mbps-20Mbps in all capital CBDs and much of the associated metropolitan areas and many regional locations. Outside of these areas the device transitions to Telstra’s fastest available 3G speeds.

    Hi Andrew,
Did the Titan II 4G get pushed back 1-2 weeks to allow this an exclusive launch window with no competition?
    Sheeds.

  2. Ron Waldon says:

Wow, people are still pushing Gingerbread phones.

So, given that this is yet another SKU of of the Galaxy S2, people can basically give up hope that it will ever be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich, yes?

It would be nice if Telstra had a policy of asking for open-source drivers, at least. That way the community is more enabled to pick up where Samsung left off. Telstra? Any commitment to pressing manufacturers to play ball with the open-source community (they won’t unless you ask them to)?

    • behelit says:

It’s not really a new phone so I don’t know why you would expect it to come with ICS (Korea had this over 3-4 months ago) but given that ICS is available for the SGS II, I don’t see why this phone won’t get it.

    • Brian says:

It wont be at the same time as the i9100 due to different CPU’s, kernel’s and Radios, but hopefully not too long after. Att: Telstra. If you need a Guinea pig for testing GT-I9210T ICS ROM, I have this phone!! Please respond soon. :-D

  3. Jono says:

I’m looking forward to the HTC Titan II 4G, hope this announcement means it is coming soon.

  4. Hazza says:

“Consumer customers can purchase the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G for $5 per month on the $59 Freedom® Connect Plan (after using an included MRO Bonus), with $550 worth of included calls & MMS, unlimited SMS and 1.5GB of data, all to standard Australian numbers (excludes use overseas) each month. according to my calculator 24 x $64 = $1536

    @Telstra : can you explain ?

    • Brendan - [Your Community Manager] says:

Hi Hazza, You’re right, we made and error. It’s $1536.

  5. annoyed says:

What about customers who just last week purchased the normal 3G version on a 24 month contract at the same price?

  6. Well the Apple I phone 4,s I’m Getting does this &a bit more personal choice its up to the individual no matter I’m happy

    • Vijay says:

Sorry to burst your bubble Kerry, but the iPhone 4S is not a 4G phone. You are right though, that it does give more personal choice and it is up to the individual.

  7. Jbro says:

What are they suppose to do bro? Not sell the phone for an extended period of time before the release of the new one…

  8. Tom says:

Can I flash this with a custom ROM (for ICS)?

  9. Andrew says:

On Telstra website it says this phone will be later updated to ICS.

Also flashing custom rom will void warranty, do at own risk.

  10. Scott says:

It’s the same as buying a television and the next week a 3d version comes out. Deal with it?

  11. Tom says:

A better analogy would be not being able to buy a 3d TV in Australia despite it already being released in the US or the UK. There’s nothing really stopping the Australian phone manufacturers from releasing ICS to Australian customers. If I can download an ICS ROM and install it myself, it can’t be that hard for Samsung Aus or HTC Aus to release an OTA update. Gingerbread was released 2 years ago. Why would I want to make an upgrade to a phone with better hardware but still have to deal with a two year old OS?

  12. FOXA says:

I have bought a Samsung Galaxy s2 4g week ago from Telstra. Compering with my Google Nexus S, the Galaxy s2 4g’s network performance is not good.

  13. tuguldur says:

    good good nice thanks

  14. Ben Thompson says:

The other thing is now thay the S3 4g has been announced i can see no update happening. And trust me if this happens I will follow through on what I said above. You as a company need to get answers from Samsung because their tardiness is making Telstra look worse than you already are.

  15. Martin says:

Just got this phone for work. It seems that ICS (Android 4) is still not available as an update. I had the choice of this or the HTC Sensation – maybe that was a bad choice. So Telstra, it’s December 2012 – when is ICS coming for the S II 4G?
