App of the Week: TuneIn Radio
Filed under: Android, app of the week, entertainment, iphone, lifestyle
Free version or 99c for Pro. I hate to open on such a divisive note, but one of my favourite things to listen to is ABC Radio’s coverage of test match cricket. Unfortunately, since I stopped driving to work in favour of public transport, I needed a way to keep my embarrassing pastime alive.
Enter TuneIn Radio.
One of the most reliable and functional apps I have found, TuneIn Radio literally transforms your iPhone (or Android) into a digital radio, complete with recording and full pause/rewind capability. Although you will need to keep an eye on your data usage (I find TuneIn generally uses between 30 and 60 mB per hour), the signal is fantastic and I have had remarkably few drop outs in the 6 months I have been tuning in.
There is also a great search function for podcasts and radio stations, a great way to discover some hidden digital only and international stations (a hint for people that like to be first, Triple J’s Unearthed Digital and BBC2 from the UK are a great way to find music that your friends haven’t heard of yet).
TuneIn also features a fantastic ‘Recommended’ feature, which finds new stations for you based on stations you like and your music library. I should issue a warning though, surfing through some of the overseas stations that are recommended can become dangerously addictive.
TuneIn Radio is a must have app for people on the go, more information at Tunein.com.

It’s a great app right up to the point at which the other half discovers “Hair Band” radio stations and you’re subjected to a constant barrage of cheesy 80s ‘rock’ music from bands with bigger perms than hits!
Haha, sorry to hear that Peter. My advice would be to avoid Foxtel, Bret Michaels (of Poison fame) has a dating show called Rock Of Love. I’ve nothing further to say on that..
Out of interest, what are the differences between the free and pro versions?
Hi Gwynn, The most noticeable difference is the Pro Version allows you pause, rewind and record programs and stations to listen to later. That feature was definitely worth the 99c they’re charging!
Yeah but wouldn’t it be great if Telstra allowed Tune in as a free data app on home and mobile broadband including mobile phones? Never happen………
App of the week – great app can we get it unmetered for all Telstra / BigPond customers.
Even better – what about an unmetered site of the week Telstra / BigPond pre and postpaid customers.-
Now that would get me interested!!!
Hi allinone, I like your idea. Perahps not every week but we could do a series. Thanks for the feedback. Brendan
I won’t need this app much longer, since http://www.mog.com/ is coming soon to Telstra!
This is only because, I only use TuneIn Radio for music, so I am sure other people will still have a need for it.
Hi Saba,
I heard the Mog announcement this morning! Very exciting. Subscription models seem to be the way forward for music, and the Mog system is amazing from what i’ve heard.
Thanks
