Telstra introduces an easy way to purchase Android apps and games
Did you know there are more than 700,000 games, apps, books, movies and magazines available on Android’s application store, Google Play?
With Australia’s app appetite growing daily, our customers told us they wanted more ways to pay for their favourite news apps, versus just by credit card.
We listened to your feedback and from today, Telstra customers with Android smartphones will be able to enjoy the convenience of charging the latest apps, games, movies and books all to their monthly Telstra mobile bill.
Specifically, Google Play purchases of up to $20 per transaction may be placed on a Telstra mobile bill. Telstra Pre-Paid customers can also use their Pre-Paid credit to make purchases.
To celebrate the launch of our new payment option, we’ve teamed up with Google to offer you a range of popular Android apps at half price.
This great offer runs until Tuesday 18th December and includes well-known titles across games, health and admin style tools:
- HD Widgets
- Swiftkey 3
- Soundhound Infinity
- Paper Camera
- Smart Tools
- Endomondo Pro
- Ocean HD
- Mini Motor Racing
- World of Goo
- Sketchbook Mobile
- Star Chart
Purchasing apps using your Telstra bill is easy….
Simply:
1. Choose the app, book, movie or game you’d like to purchase.
2. Click ‘Accept and Buy’.
3. Select ‘Bill my Telstra account’.
4. Click ‘Accept and Buy’.
For Post-Paid customers a monthly limit of $100 applies for app and content purchases charged to their Telstra bill. This limit can be adjusted by calling Telstra on 125 111.

I’ve Agora Dongle running Android. My question is ‘is there a app for watching ABC iView available’ ? I can get it onscreen but cannot navigate to the ‘play tab’. I can play the previews. I understand there are issues with the eco system of Andoid and copyright concers as well as downloading. It is a Kogan with a Samsung chip. Also can I avail myself of some of the programs you provide on the device?
Wow, this is an awesome offer from Telstra! A superb way to use our unused credits (which are plenty)
I’d recommend grabbing that Swiftkey 3 half-price offer. One of the best Android apps I’ve ever tried/used
Great move by Telstra and Google.
Micropayments have yet to take off in any significant way due to the inconvenience of using a credit card for every 99c transaction. But no such qualms exist when paying a phone bill for $61 instead of $60.
Developing countries have been doing this for years – many people there don’t own credit cards but they are able pay their phone bill using more traditional methods.
I would imagine Telstra retain a cut on every Play transaction made via the phone bill. Wins all round.
Howdy,
I can’t get it working “pay with telstra account” is not an option that is available. How do I make it available?
Hi James, Is this still an issue for you?
I’m having exactly the same problem. I’ve tried calling Telstra tech support and that was a complete joke. They didn’t help in the slightest, were rude, and then basically said it wasn’t there problem. So, I’m left with no resolution now. Extremely unhappy with Telstra at the moment.
Hi Lewis, I’m sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. Please try contacting us via live chat and we’ll try to sort this out for you right away: http://tinyurl.com/24×7-service
it’s an issue for me. it would only accept a credit card. I tried adding a new payment method and still the only option was a cc.
hi there kerry im in the same boat as you as i have placed a post on telstra crowd support im still awaiting for a response from them as to social media team and telstra live chat and the shop front is useless at this so im giving crowd support ago ive emailed google even thats worse as well
and the 24 hour helps chat people are useless as they haven’t heard about this. just been from robot to next level to 3rd level who still said this doesn’t exist and told me to turn my phone off and on and see if it works. Nope it doesn’t They are calling me back. well i’m still waiting. They’ve no idea. so much for offering this service.
