Telstra EasyTouch 4G: for first-time smartphone owners

blog-easy-touch-design-process-banner

Just over half of our mobile customers use a smartphone today. That means many are yet to make the shift to an internet connected mobile with easy access to the web and apps.

Today we’re launching a mobile designed for people who are thinking of moving to a smartphone but want the experience to be simple.

Telstra EasyTouch 4GThe Telstra EasyTouch® 4G is the first smartphone in our range of Easy devices which also includes the Telstra Easy Discovery 3 and the Telstra EasyCall® 2.

The EasyTouch 4G comes with a 4.3-inch capacitive touch screen, an 8 mega-pixel camera with LED Flash, MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity and 4GB of internal memory expandable to 32GB with a microSD memory card. It runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s 4G-enabled meaning you can enjoy superfast downloads and stream video with ease in 4G coverage areas.

But it’s the easy-to-use user interface that really sets this smartphone apart.

During the development of a previous Easy product, the Telstra Easy Discovery 3, we shared the phone with groups of customers to get some key insights. During these sessions we found that whilst many of these customers were using feature phones they were interested in moving to a simple and easy smartphone. They wanted the latest technology, access to the internet, social networking and emails, however not at the expense of easily accessing the core functions they need to stay connected with their family and loved ones.

Following those sessions, we set about meeting the challenge of designing a smartphone that could not only help customers bridge the gap between feature and smartphone, but would also be a good smartphone for those customers who knew their way around a device – but wanted a simple experience. What followed was an intensive 6 month design period.

Early in the process, we settled on Android as the operating system for what would become the Telstra EasyTouch 4G as it provided us with a flexible, powerful platform and includes great features that our existing smartphone customers like. Yet it was this flexibility and range of features that presented us with a challenge. The breadth of features can be daunting for customers who aren’t familiar. With that in mind we set out to design software elements to specifically give customers easy access to the features that are used most on a phone such as calling, messages, email, browser and handset settings.

We know it can be easy to lose track of unread email, texts and missed call notifications in the midst of all the menus – especially when you’re starting out on a smartphone so we created Easy widgets and a new lock screen which were designed to show unread or un-actioned email, text and call notifications.

The four Easy widgets preinstalled on EasyTouch 4G are:

  • Phone – Which provides quick access to the phone dialler and call log, contacts and messages and shows at a glance if you have missed calls or have unread messages.
  • Internet – A hub for the browser, favourite bookmarks and your emails.
  • Media – Quick access to your camera and photo gallery as well as the music player.
  • Settings – Which lets you set your alarm, adjust sounds and manage Wi-Fi settings.

Next we looked at the standard lock screen and repeated the process. We added simplified and colour-coded notification buttons for unlock and, when appropriate, missed calls, messages and email , so that customers need only press and hold the appropriate button to jump directly to that area.

The EasyTouch 4G was also designed to be more accessible with a large font size that can be selected by people with reduced vision and simplified iconography and colour-coded buttons on the phone widgets for intuitive navigation and maximum contrast.

The “easy” widgets are removable — so as customers get more familiar with their new smartphone, they can choose to either remove or add easy features from their home-screen as they need.

The team found it really rewarding to design something that we hope will help customers connect in new ways. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Pricing and availability

The EasyTouch 4G launches today, 13 November, and is available to personal customers for $0 (after using your MRO bonus) on a $60 Every Day ConnectTM Plan over 24 months (Min cost over 24 months $1,440).

It is also available to purchase outright for $456.

Unfortunately it does not work in Tolga Far North Qld. which is the reason we bought it today so we could plug it into an antenna. This doesn’t help the visitors with mobiles other than telstra mobiles. Why is Tolga out in the cold???

  2. Noel says:

Why is Telstra so incompetent almost looks like Optus, if a complaint gets too hard you phone and some non english speaking person who does not even know where Australia is tries to handle your complaint.
Ring up and ask to speak to the CEO and no one can put you through.

  3. Noel says:

Smart phone and an Australia Telco bit like army and intelligence isn’t it.

    • Max says:

Noel, You have made two comments on here and they are both very negative. I am a telstra customer of 3 years and find their service great as I do their network.
I am also in the millitary and know that on average, millitary members are a very smart group of people doing a very difficult job that most others would shy away from….. your rude comments are unwelcome and undeserving.

    • Noel,
I fully support the comments above by Max, if you are “frustrated” with Telstra – call your local Manager – he/she will not be rude as you have been, and will surely listen and try to resolve your complaint.

I too am ex defence and find your comments unsavoury.

  4. Mike (Employee) says:

This seems like a good step for those wanting to bridge the smart phone gap. I’m quiet interested in what sort of accessories are available for this handset, and where and when they will be available.

  5. CCQ says:

I’m looking for a phone for my elderly mother. Seems even the simplest of phones are too small and have terrible menus.

This phone looks like it might be a good alternative for the older generations, though I’ll have to drag my mother into a T-Shop to see if she can drive the touch screen.

    • Hi CCQ. I’ve been letting my Mum look at my phones and play for while over the past few years and she’s not really warmed to them. I’m hoping this one is going to get her to move from old NOKIA to 4G Android. Let me know how you go.

  6. Sam says:

    Great Initiative,
Can’t wait to get the olds on to this one
Then MAYBE I can convince to getting an iPhone or SIII further down the track,

But you got to be able to walk before you run!

  7. Noel says:

    Max
Thank you for your words of wisdom my 15 years in the RAN I believed we were defending among other things the right to free speech if you don’t liked views well I have no problem with that. Perhaps when you go up a little and lived life a little more you will understand that democratic societies contain many people with many different views. You military training will one day teach you that or at least I hope it wil.

  8. Noel says:

Thank you I am happy to comply

  9. Marg says:

I purchased a Telstra Easytouch 4G about ten days ago. This was after I nearly signed up for a Samsung Galaxy 111, of which I was looking forward to. The reason I had to change my mind at the last minute was that the Telstra shop told me that I could not connect an external aerial to the Samsung…Shock, Horror, we do a lot of travelling. So I walked out of the shop, disappointed. (Since, I have done some research and have found that people have been using external aerials on the Samsung..although Testra Tech tell me they will be doing damage.). I had been shown the Telstra Easytouch 4G because of its blue tick. I went back to the shop and ended up purchasing a Teltra Easytouch 4G. I am not really happy with this phone…I have had problems with sending photos, and I cannot get a suitable phone cover or screen cover. Anyone know of any cases or screen covers????

    • Gavin says:

      Marg,
As of the current time of posting this, screen protectors and a “leather” pouch can be purchased direct from China via Aliexpress.com…
      http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=zte+t82

I was very interested in this phone for my parents but the outright purchase price is quite expensive and unfortunately also not available on Business plans (even though Rebecca on the video above mentions something about business people would like this phone as it has an external antenna port).

    • Kathy says:

I want to buy a telstra easytouch 4g for use in rural Australia. Cannot believe they do not have pouches or covers for them. This persons suggests covers that fit T82, however the telstra shop people suggest that will not fit. Can anyone offer any ideas?

      regards
      Kathy

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Kathy,

I can appreciate why this is so frustrating. As mentioned to you previously, Telstra has begun stocking covers specifically for the Easy Touch. Please check with your local Telstra stores :)

  10. Glenys Walton says:

I agree with Marg. Cannot find screen or phone covers. Why sell a product if you cant provide the accessories. Went to website as suggested by Gavin but listed zte + t82. Does this mean they will fit same phone? I live in rural country so its hard to get this sort of thing other than on the net but I dont want to send for something in China if it wont fit the phone.

    • Paul says:

G’day Glenys, the T82 is the base chassis that the Easytouch 4G is built on so any accessories that suit a T82 would suit your phone.

  11. Christiane says:

Ok, someone needs to tell me if you can hook an aerial on
the Telstra Easy Touch 4g or not?
I do a lot of travelling around the country and I need to know before I get myself one.

    • Leigh Price (Blog Editor) says:

Hi Christiane, there are no aerial accessories for the EasyTouch 4G. Our sales team can help you find a suitable phone and talk you through your options – they can be contacted here: http://www.telstra.com.au/help/contact/

    • Merilyn Lydiard says:

      Hi Christiane
If you go to Sun Air & Sound (we bought ours in Cairns) they have the aerial which then hooks into the back of the phone. The only reason we bought the Easy Touch 4G is because it is the only one that has a legitimate aerial socket. They tell me that you can hook into the Samsung but when speaking to the guys from Sun Air and Sound they say that your warranty is then useless. We were advised by Telstra as it is compatible to aerial connection.

    • Kathy says:

The aerial port looks the same as the one I have currently for my blue tick telstra phone. Not sure how good the aerial is though because when we were in the bush it did not make any difference. We did however have better coverage than other people who did not have blue tick.

i am most annoyded being charged 400% more when i ring someone and it does not answer and goes to your answering service 2 seconds $1.30 last year .30 cents corperat theft on a large scale.

  13. Graham says:

I had a brief look at this phone in the Telstra shop today. I did not see a swype keyboard. Is there an option to enable this?

    • Leigh Price (Blog Editor) says:

Hi Graham. I’m not too sure myself, but our sales team can help you out. You can start a live web chat with them here.

    • MikeB says:

      Yes.
Easiest way to enable the swype is to go to Messaging, start a new message to open up the keyboard. now pull down the Notifications bar from the top of the screen and you see an option that says “Select input method”. Touch this, choose TouchPal keyboard. Now you have a new keyboard that support swype text.

  14. christiane says:

There is an outside aerial socket at the back of the Telstra Easytouch 4g!!. I even have a lead patch for it that I used on my old telstra phone….So, with my 3m high aerial on the back of my caravan I should be ok. Thanks to everyone who answered….Now I am looking for a cover!!!Anyone? Thanks
    Christiane

  15. Graham says:

Christiane, try https://www.thephonestore.com.au/customer/account/login/ and search for ZTE T82. My items are on back order though. I borrowed some Galaxy items from a friend and they suffice for now. Some can be a pretty good fit if you look through a store selling phone accessories.
I have noticed my keys and icons unresponsive at times. Another time the keyboard was overly sensitive and ran out multiple letters. This happened after a lot of keyboard/icon use. I restarted it once and often move out of an app and it is OK after that. Anyone else noticed this?

  16. Robert H says:

I’ve just purchased a Easytouch phone and would still like to know why Telstra would release a product and not be able to supply the Cover and screen protection? Also some sort of instruction manual or at least a few hints on how to get started. I did ask at 2 telstra shops and was told there is no manual or screen protector or cover and basically advised to go home and google it, well done telstra

    • Helen says:

I just bought this phone and tried to buy a screen protector because the one on the phone when I bought it was scratch, and I couldn’t. I went to Reject Shop and bought an iphone cover which suffices. I’m not happy with the phone now, I wish I had bought the Samsung or Nokia. There are no covers in the Telstra shop so I went to a little mobile shop repair business in Gungahlin, ACT and they found me a cover which seems to work well.

    • MikeB says:

The user manual is in the main menu > Help. Or you can download from zte.com.au.
User manual on the device saves paper, pacakaging and shipping costs, and as most people never read it seems like a good idea to me

  17. Tracy says:

I purchased this phone because of its coverage & the fact that I could fit an external Arial. I had it one week & it died. Took 3 weeks to replace it. replacement is great. My complaints are that to talk on phone while external arial is connected i have to hold the connection into the phone as it dislodges as soon as I attempt to pick it up. And I would never have spent good money purchasing this product had I known that it was not possible to buy a suitable cover. To pay good money & spend your day freakin out that you might smash it does my head in. Telstra should be able to provide phone covers if they are selling the phone. The only cover i did find was not practical.

  18. Graham says:

I am having problems with sms from voicemail. Sometimes it is hours after the missed call. On one occasion it was 2 days. Some forums suggest a phone software problem. Is anyone else having this difficulty? The other odd thing is that I am not receiving some calls even when I have a good signal. It appears they go straight to voicemail. I am in regional NSW with good tower service.

    • Darryl says:

I also have this problem. The phone will sometimes not receive and is not able to make any calls. It shows full signal.I have to restart the phone to fix.I recently travelled with this phone and sometimes after coming back into service range the phone would not show signal untill it had been turned off/on.

  19. trevor says:

Bought pone as it had blue tick but get very little sevice. all i get is a hot pocket as phone gets so hot then battery goes dead in few hours. had previous telsta phone and i had reasonable service. bought it over a htc, iphone 4, or samsung as it had blue tick, they all work here so now i am tied into 2yr contract with useless phone might as well put sim back in old phone, least it works

    • MikeB says:

It could be faulty. Take it back to your dealer and get it tested or sent off for repair

  20. chris says:

no cover and now a broken screen, in less than 1 month. Can I get a replacement?

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Chris,

That’s no good! It depends on a few factors, I recommend you take it in to your local Telstra store or the store where you purchased it and explain to them what happened. They’ll be able to assess it for you :)

  21. Fay says:

I was going to purchase Telstra easy touch 4G but with all the bad comments I won’t buy it now. Looked good for older people. Pity Telstra shops don’t tell the truth.

  22. kathy says:

When will covers be available? I bought 2 phones one for myself and one for my daughter as it’s the only smart phone available with an aerial port. I am frustrated that we were not told that covers weren’t available for the phone until after we had signed up. I couldn’t believe that it was bought out without a cover being available and there seems to be no cover available from other brands that fit because of its different size. I bought a HTC cover as it fits reasonably okay but the phone slid out and now my daughter as a cracked screen she’d had the phone for less than a month.

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Kathy,

Eek – that’s no good to hear! I have just checked with the products team and cases should be available now. Best to check with your local Telstra store to see if they have stock available.

  23. Helen says:

    Hello,
Why can’t I load my pictures to Facebook. It looks like the phone is sending to Facebook, but the pictures never turn up? I hope this can be fixed as it was one of the features I wanted for the phone.
    Thanks,
    Helen

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Helen,

Not too sure what’s going on here. Are you sure you’ve got data/WiFi switched on or have you tried reinstalling the app? If you’re still having an issue, I recommend chatting to our 24×7 Live Chat crew online via their Facebook page (the links are above) – as you’re having problems with your Facebook app perhaps do this from a desktop device!

    • MikeB says:

Sending pics to Facebook is working fine for me. It could be the file size is too large. In the Camera app change the resolution to be less than 3MP. The default camera setting is 8MegaPixels so will produce a very large sized image. You need a smaller sized image in order to upload it to FB.

  24. Merilyn Lydiard says:

We went and checked on the covers that Telstra suggested and found that the phone fits in OK but it has no hole for the arial and instead of being able to talk with the phone in the cover, you have to take the phone out of the cover first. As we have to have the arieal on 24/7 because of NO reception at all in our home, this is a real pest.
You also have to take the phone out to take photos and to charge the battery.

  25. Tony says:

As I live lower Eyre Peninsula South Oz and travel a lot over Eyre P and into Adelaide. Will this suit my needsI want/need a hard wired car kit and external arieal.

  26. Peter says:

I purchased a Telstra ZTE T82 about a month ago as I was after a phone which could be connected to an exterior antenna via a patch lead. Have not had the opportunity to test the performance yet with the antenna attached. My issue at the moment is that when using the bluetooth in a late model Toyota Landcruiser, both the phone and vehicle are connected via bluetooth, but when I make a call, the message “not supported” appears on the vehicles screen! Have removed and registered the phone a number of times with no success. Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so, what is the solution?
    Thanks, Peter

  27. Peter says:

In addition to the bluetooth issues in my question above, emails received in my ‘inbox’ disappear after 30 minutes or so. Have checked the setttings under ‘ account settings’, but there does not appear to be anywhere to nominate a time period for emails to be retained in the inbox. This problem only developed yesterday – have had the phone a month and emails received remained in the inbox until such time as I deleted them.

    Thanks again, Peter

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

This sounds like something has gone haywire with the settings. Again, the 24×7 team will be able to help you out with this – they’re a useful bunch :)

    • Peter says:

I have recently spoken again to both my local Telstra shop and Toyota dealer in WA. According to the Toyota dealer, it would seem that most Testra phone are not compatible with Toyota’s Bluetooth function. Toyota advises they do not have an update to their system that will enable my Telstra phone to operate via the Bluetooth function on my near new Toyota Landcruiser. I think it is pathethic that all Telstra branded phones are not compatible with Toyota’s Bluetooth – isn’t Toyota one of the major selling brands in Australia? Am now regretting changing from an HTC to this phone (the only reason was that it had the external antenna connectivity). Have spoken to the Telstra technical experts in this area – their response was “sorry, can’t help you!” Not good enough Telstra.

  28. Joan Smithers says:

Ok i brought this easytouch telstra 4g phone and just wondering why i cant send pics to my family or send them to facebook having big problems with this phone and can’t buy a phone cover.

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Joan,

It sounds like your settings might not be configured correctly. Have a chat to our 24×7 Customer Service team online via Live Chat (http://tinyurl.com/24×7-service) – they’ll be able to help you out :)

    • MikeB says:

      Sending photos…
This phone has an 8MP camera so the photos are too high resolution (too large) to send out. Change the default camera resolution to less than 3MP and you find you can send every shot by MMS and Facebook etc.

  29. Marg says:

Wow. After my vomment way above. I did not realise just how many people were having the same problems. My phone has been replaced as faulty. I still haven’t been able to get screen cover, protective cover or patch lead. I have been told that Jaycar have patch leads but as yet haven’t had the opportunity to get to their store to check. The samsung patch lead fits but the shank is too.long and falls out. Because of the long shank the pin may not be making good connection
    .

  30. Peter says:

Just wondering where i can buy a cover and screen protector for a telstra easy touch 4 asumed if telstra sold the phone they would sell the accessories. Its a little bit like selling a car without seats can anyone help please ?

  31. Sally says:

There is a lot of negative comments here. Are there a lot of positive ones out there as well? I’m like many of you and like to travel a lot. I know there will still be areas where I can’t get reception but I want better reception with an aerial. I’m concerned with the comment re Toyota as that is the car we have. What other phones mught be better for Australian travel?

    • Scott says:

I love the new easytouch 4g. Our home is in a mobile blackspot but after purchasing the patch lead from our local t-store ans hooking to outside antenna, we now get full coverage on my phone. I also find it very easy to use.
