Nokia Lumia 920 launches with Telstra
Filed under: Lumia 920, mobile handsets, Nokia, Windows Phone
We’ve heard your call outs for the Nokia Lumia 920, we know you want to get it as soon as possible, and we know you want great deals, including the awesome NFC accessories that the Lumia uses.
So here’s the date you need to remember to be the first in line to grab your very own Lumia 920 from Telstra, powered by Windows Phone 8 and supporting one of the world’s most advanced mobile networks – Telstra’s national 4G network. The release date for the Nokia Lumia 920 is 27 November 2012 and we’re excited to be launching this device in selected Telstra stores.
To really get this thing jump started we have a couple of special offers for you because we know that you’re as excited as we are about the possibilities with this new smartphone.
Today we’ve announced a bonus offer if you pre-order online.
Pre-order the Nokia Lumia 920 on on an Every Day Connect plan (details below) before November 26 we’ll throw in a portable JBL Playup speaker valued at $199 at no additional cost!
The JBL is an awesome way to pump out your tunes, it’s rechargeable and connects with the Lumia 920 over NFC (Near Field Communictions). You can play a song just by tapping your phone on the speaker. I can’t wait to start using mine!
So the only question left is, which colour to order?
Features of the Nokia Lumia 920
- The Nokia 920 comes with built-in wireless charging and sports a polycarbonate design
- It is available from Telstra in four colours: black, white, red and yellow
- 32GB of memory + 7GB of SkyDrive cloud-hosted storage
- 8.7-megapixel camera uses advanced floating lens technology that Nokia says takes in five times more light than competing smartphones, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night. Nokia calls it PureView — also compensates for hand movement while a photo is being taken and we think you’re going to really like it
- 4.5 inch ‘PureMotion HD+’ display
- Windows Phone 8 is the perfect companion for all of your productivity requirements with Microsoft Office built in!

Is telstra planning on loading the 920 with it’s various telstra branded applications? or will it be stock?
It doesn’t matter because WP8 lets you uninstall telco bloatware
Hi Ben
The Lumia will come loaded with the Telstra One app to the best of my knowledge it is quite useful
That’s great news and a fantastic deal. I’ve already pre-ordered mine
Any idea what colour JBL speaker we will be receiving? I was unable to select a JBL speaker colour within the pre-ordering process, so sent a reply email to the order confirmation email I received and requested a black JBL speaker unit.
Also, I notice the JBL PlayUp speaker bonus is on offer to customers who pre-order before November 26 on the advertising banner, while in your post the date is listed as November 20. Which is the correct date? Thanks.
Hi Luke
You’ll be stoked that the speakers are all black!
I have updated the blog with the correct date. Hopefully we can deliver pre-orders sooner.
Tried to pre-order the this morning. Says my account number is a mobile number (which it is NOT) and will not allow me to conitnue with my pre-order.
Staff at 2 seperate stores in Brisbane CBD weren’t even aware of the phones existance let alone the fact the pre-order was open today and ushered me out of the store with NO assistance at all.
As a former Telstra employee and a Business Account Customer I am totally digusted.
Hi Jesse, Sorry to hear about that crappy experience. I’ve arranged for someone to email you and get some details so we can look after you. Brendan
When do the outright phones end up in stores for pre-order? $696 is a very good price – much better than Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi etc… Almost feel sorry for those trying to pre-order from other carriers!
Hi Craig
There is no preorder for instore at this point. It will be on a first come basis. The date we have right now is Nov 29th.
Nice, hopefully the preorders arrive early
Is it possible to pre-order the Lumia 920 to purchase outright?
Hi James
No, the pre-order is for online only sorry.
Thank you for finally announcing a date!
Now, to be a nuisance, do you have any information for when retailers will have these devices? I want it in Grey, and Telstra are inexplicably not making that available directly through themselves.
Finally! And at a reasonable retail price too. Now to decide whether to go and buy the glossy yellow, or wait for the matte cyan… Choices.
I got the pre order email but Telstra already seems to be sold outr of Red ones. Does anyone know if they’ll be getting any extra Red 902′s in stock
The pre order has reopened this morning! I have just ordered mine, hope you get one too
:0)
Will the Lumia 920 be released outright at the same time as those on plans? Can we pre-order one outright to secure stock?
I would also like to pre-order one outright if possible.
Hi Adz
We don’t do pre-order for outright sorry pal, you’ll have to wait for the 27th for that one and I recommend planning to line up if the demand for pre-order was anything to go by.
If you purchase it outright, is there a unlocking fee?
Outright means unlocked. So no fee Dave.
Is this the international version? Can you list all of the bands that the version you are selling provides?
From my understanding, there are 2 major variants of the Lumia 920 (if the 920T, which is China specific, is not considered). From my understanding we in Australia will be getting the ‘Global’ variant, which is RM-821. This will work on all 2G, 3G, & 4G bands in Australia. But a confirmation from a Telstra staff would be great

Hi Ben, I will ask for you.
Hi Ben, I will ask for you.
Hi Ben. Yes, we are bringing the 821 variant to market.
There is only one global version.*
It is a pentaband one.
Look at the specifications for the phone and you will be able to see the bands it works on.
*There are actually 2 however the second version is only available for AT&T in the USA as it was specially made to work on their network
Thanks for the confirmation Brendan
FINALLY! And managed to snag a red one too. All that maniacal refreshing of the Whirlpool thread was worth it.
Oh my gosh yes, I can have my life back now!
Well mostly… Still have to wait for delivery.
Can the outright phones be pre-ordered? What does it mean by selected stores?
I’d like to know as well.
My question as well.
I want ot buy outright, will connec tot existing telstra business accounts.
When will we expect Cyan?
Carl,
The Cyan model is exclusive to AT&T in the US, so I don’t think it will be made available as the RM821 Version doesn’t have it anywhere in the world.
They look great! Nice to finally have dates and info :0)
Seems all sold out now on the pre-order page. About an hour ago there were only the black and the white ones available for pre-order while yellow and red already had the ‘Coming Soon’ button shown.
Now all the colours have ‘coming soon’ button…which means all sold out?
Will there be cyan avaliable later and it says theres no more stock for the 920, will they get more soon
Hi Nic
Not at this stage but that may change as we track down more stock!
Looks like Western Australia misses out again. Nothing available to preorder at 2:00pm WST. Not happy….
Happy Camper now!!! Got a preorder in after midnight EDT. WA had a time advantage for once…early night for me.
That’s awesome! I logged on early this morning too and got one that I missed out on yesterday
Yay to us both, and hopefully others
:0)
Pre-order gone sub 5 hours for all colours..hoping that resellers may have similar deal with the speaker and reduced price charging station, otherwise you’ll be better off buying it from O/S.
i had pre-order lumia920 as soon as possible, but one thing i’m confused that did this lumia 920(post paid) is unlock? because i will go to another country for a month
Have pre-orders sold out? I just went to nab one but all the colours say coming soon
I also tried to pre order at a Telstra shop for $696 – after an hours wait – they didn’t know about the deal! What gives?
Hiya!
The offer was for pre-order online so outright is not available in store until the 29th
Nooo!!! I hesitated on the colour decision, now No more stock? I want to pre-order and get my JBL player.
Hi Jonathan
First wave hit hard and sold out fast, we are releasing more as quick as we can – please keep trying.
Will I get the same deal when I buy outright in a Telstra store and can I get a Grey one
Hi Martin
I tried to be quite specific that this was preorder online offer, sorry champ.
In store purchases cannot be pre-ordered and will only be available after the 29th and only the colours mentioned above.
where can we pre-order the phone to be purchased outright? how many years of warranty does Telstra guarantee for the L920?
Telstra is not going to provide warranty on a phone that they do not make.
Nokia will provide the warranty…
hi Jon
We are not doing pre-order for instore, online only sorry and the stocks have now been exhausted for now.
Warranty will be normal as per the Manufacturer of the device (Nokia)
…To the Telstra Management
REMEMBER – REMEMBER – REMEMBER
Nokia brand is NOT anymore No#1 brand, $696 is too expensive, don’t be greedy start selling Lumia 920 with $500 and kill competition…
I dont think it would be possible to sell it outright for $500 without losing money or only making a very small amount of profit.
If you paid telstra $500 for the phone telstra only gets to keep $450 as the other $50 is GST
So to sell it for $500 telstra would need to buy the phone for around $300 so they can make some profit.
I dont see nokia selling the phone wholesale for $300 as nokia needs to make the phone, send it to australia and make a profit selling it.
Seriously Don, get a life. Nokia Lumia 920 is not your cheap n nasty Android phone. Telstra (for once) is the cheapest in the Country at the moment at $696 outright.
Available on the 29th in “selected” stores.
How do we know which stores?
Also is it true that the wireless charger will be offered in store for $29 instead of $129?
We’ll hopefully let you know closer to the date while we organise individual store stock levels.
So many people in this thread have asked about outright order. Can you please reply or provide some information?
Thanks!
AJ, we don’t do outright orders online. Brendan
Pre-order was online only sorry AJ and stocks have now been exhausted sorry.
The device will be available in select stores from Nov 27.
Hi Dan,
Will Telstra release the names of those stores prior to the 27th? Will it be possible to pre-purchase in those stores prior to the 27th?
Will the Nokia Wireless Charging Stand (DT-910) be available in stores at launch? Will this model get discounted the same as the Wirelss Charging Plate (DT-900)?
Thanks Brendan & Dan. I appreciate your response. Please let us know which are the select stores for 27th Nov.
ok so im pretty unhappy with telstra right now! Like alot of people ive been waiting for this phone forever, i receive the pre order email only to have the phone sold out on pre order. I talk to my local telstra store in launceston to be told they know nothing about this phone, when it will be available, if they are getting it etc etc Pleeeeeease can someone give me the correct information, its very very frustrating and i want this phone Thanks
hi Dani
I’m really sorry you got the run around, pre-order stock flew out the window and has now run out unfortunately. We are still working through stock and individual levels so Launceston were not to blame.
It will be in select stores from Nov 27 – I just hope your store is one of them!
any news if it will get a Blue Tick ??
Rocco, Closer to the release date we may know.
Do these phones come with Telstra logo/stamp anywhere?
Not to the best of my knowledge Vinh.
can this be confirmed?
Was I too late for the preorder???? says 27th Nov
Wow I cant believe how fast the pre orders went. mind you the concept of a pre order should never close.
its a pre order, hence letting Telstra know how many they need on release date.
let me pre order i want my JBL.
Incredible. Pre-order stock exhausted already? That’s fantastic! And most of the time when I mention windows phone or lumia people give me weird look like I’m talking jibberish. I think this phone is going to be more popular than I thought.
I’m glad I got my order in when I did. Can’t wait for my shiny red lumia!
I wonder where Sheeds is. He is usually all over this stuff.
Really disappointed with Telstra I have been waiting weeks for this phone to come out. I get an email stating that it is now up for pre-order, i tried to do and and found that it had run out of stock.
So now i miss out on a nice JBL Speaker (for my partner also as she was going to get this phone) AND ontop of that we’re told it will be released to selected stores so we MIGHT be lucky enough to get one.
I got my home phone, Internet, two mobiles and a T-Box with Telstra, you would THINK they would look after customers (myself and others included) a little better that support the company.
Once again I feel its typical of Telstra and their attitude towards us of “whatever”
I went into my local store (Point Cook) and was told (after waiting 5 minutes to be served)
“Ohhh yea i dont know i think that 910 or something is comming in sometime around christmas or something hold on ill get someone”
The second person who helped i will admit was extremely helpful and explained it would most likely be in December and took my name and number IF they came in (yet again IF)
Just very disappointed in Telstra in general at the moment and got nowhere else to vent my anger but on here so anyway. Nothing left to do but wait
Hi Mike
I’m really sorry you missed out mate, but it was first come first served basis and we did email you once stock was available.
There is no ‘whatever’ attitude here pal, there was just overwhelming demand.
Keep your eye on the link and checking back in and if I can do anything to help secure you a pre-order I will.
Otherwise, stores will be in selected stores from Nov 27.
For thoses of you with a business Acc. – Pre-orders for Lumia920 are still available at time of this posting. However only Black or White were available. Still includes the free JBL speaker.
https://www.telstra.com.au/online-shop/business/business-phone-plan.cfm?flow=bizPostpaid&plantype=tbpp-60-handset
Hey Mike,
I just called Pt Cook today and they have the phone in but in black only – reckons the full colours within a week – not sure if this helps you but remembered seeing your comment so thought I would let you know
:0)
What’s the go with pre-order stock? New release each day at midnight? This is my second night of trying and no luck!
Should I stay up late tonight?
Thanks for the reply Dan I read that Australia was getting Grey and the US was getting Cyan I wanted cyan but change to grey Harvey Norman said this morning that colours would be 2 weeks after release date is this correct on just a thing with them I would prefer to buy from our local Telstra shop it would save the 300kl drive
Hi Martin
Black, White, Yellow & Red are the only colours we will launch with, in select stores from Nov 27. I can’t advise which specific stores will stock at this point, sorry.
I don’t know what Harvey Normans plans or colours ranges will be you’d need to ask them directly.
Can contract upgrades only be preformed instore / over the phone? If that is the case I guess we will wait for the stores to receive stock and head down there.
Lastly, does any one know of any where in the retail land if a working demo is on display yet? If so which retailer. Cheers
Hi Bilko
Pre-order stock has been exhausted now so best option is to wait for Nov 27 when select stores will get stock to do your contract upgrade.
No working demo’s in the country that I know of sorry champ.
Hi Telstra,
I would like to preorder a grey 920 but can’t seem to find the option on your website. Are you stocking them in grey and if so , when?
Thanks in anticipation.
Hi Stuart
Black, White, Yellow and Red are the only colours we will be launching in select stores from Nov 27, pre-order allocations have been exhausted at this point.
You might have picked up if you had read the previous comments that Grey will not be one of the colours that Telstra will be offering. They are only offering Black, White, Red and Yellow. If you go to the pre-order page for the 920 you will see that they are the only colours they offer.
If you really want grey, you may need to purchase it outright from a retailer like Harvey Norman or Mobicity.com.au.
If grey isn’t that big a deal then the price that Telstra is offering them outright is the best so far.
My previous comment is awaiting moderation… Telstra you really let the ball down here. I signed up for the “register your intrest” and did I get an email, no. I found out of a tech site and it was too late to order. So much for putting my name in the hat weeks ago to get this phone ASAP. Plus I will also miss out on your bonus deal.
Are there any plans to compensate those that missed out on this deal especially if we registered our intent for these phones weeks ago?
It is possible that you typed your email address in wrongly or that the email was picked up as spam by your spam filter.
Temujin,
The exact same thing happened to me, I too signed up some 2 weeks ago for pre-order notification. I kept checking my emails reguarily for the much anticipated notification of pre-orders which did not come and still has not come. I too discovered that pre-orders were being taken via google search. I however was a little more lucky than you and managed to get one through the telstra buisness web site, but not the colour that i wanted, the colour i ordered was my 3rd preference a black unit.
I am not surprised about not being notified WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TELSTRA here. They never cease to amaze me at there incompetence.
Sometimes they do surprise though, I just wish it was more often.
That is unfortunate. I don’t recall when I got my email notifying of the availability of pre-orders but I caught wind of Telstra accepting pre-orders via twitter so I was lucky in that regard that I was able to place an order and get the colour I want.
I do remember that I got the email not long after I placed my order but I figure everyone else who checked twitter must have been on the ball because I know that the Red one sold out in only a few hours.
Have pre-ordered mine. Eagerly waiting for it. Also the deal with the JBL speaker was a nice add-on.
Hi All,
For thoses of you with a business Acc. – Pre-orders for Lumia920 are still available at time of this posting. However only Black or White were available. Still includes the free JBL speaker.
https://www.telstra.com.au/online-shop/business/business-phone-plan.cfm?flow=bizPostpaid&plantype=tbpp-60-handset
My personal account is out of contract and my business one isn’t for 10 months so no luck here.
Hi
I just need to know where I can get my shiny Lumia 920 outright…. “Stock will be available be in select stores from 27 November” select stores?? Where?
hi dan, i really want to get the phone, i do have a business abn but i’d rather have my free calls after 7pm instead of 9-5pm. would i be able to change plans to the standard everyday connect after i get the phone?
Really disappointed Telstra, I got my order in for a red 920 before stock ran out, I even got my confirmation details and order number. Today I get an email saying sorry but there is a shortage of stock and delivery will be delayed! No details by how long or if I will stick get the free speaker…
I can’t believe how many people ask the SAME questions!!
I preordered mine, got An email confirmation, is there anyway to track delivery? Or do we get a notification when it’s sent? Mine being delivered to my workplace, so need to make sure Im not in a meeting so I can play with it!
Also, any word on data sense support or secure SIM for NFC payments? I have read mixed so far.
Are Telstra possibly planning to sell accessories?. Like the wireless charging plate?.
Considering the flack Telstra get, you guys do a great job at responding!
.Darren
Nearly 20 hours since my post – still no response from telstra. I ‘registered my interest’ about a month ago and have not heard a thing since -no email advising of pre-order!
Email advising out of stock was signed off by Gerd Schenkel (Telstra Executive Director) who regularly complains of poor service on Twitter – he should try to do business with Telstra.
Telstra’s online support team did not even know what a Nokia 920 was.
Come on Telstra, how about responding!
Did you check your spam folder?
It is also possible that you typed your email address in wrongly!
” Telstra’s online support team did not even know what a Nokia 920 was.
Thats because it is a LUMIA 920
