nokia-lumia-920-header

This is it guys, the news you have all been hanging out for! Telstra’s first Windows Phone 8 device, the stunning Nokia Lumia 920 is expected to launch by the end of November.

I for one can’t wait. With the release of Windows 8 on October 26 I have started to get really excited about the integration of mobile and desktop computing and moving back into a Windows ecosystem.

From the 7GB of Skydrive access, to the awesome features like Wireless Charging, and that gobsmacking Nokia PureView camera, this is the phone that brings to life that integrated experience I have been waiting for.

Get our your rainbow colours!

Once launched, the Nokia Lumia 920 will be available from Telstra in black, white, red and yellow. Sorry guys, no cyan at this stage.

Pricing

Once available personal customers will be able to purchase Nokia Lumia 920 on the $60 Every Day Connect Plan with a $5 handset repayment per month (after using an included MRO Bonus) for 24 months which offers $600 worth of standard national calls and MMS plus unlimited text messaging to standard Australian numbers and 1GB of data for use in Australia. Min cost over 24 months is $1,560 ($65/mth) (2 minute standard call $2.38, excess data usage $0.10/MB).

Once available business customers will be able to purchase Nokia Lumia 920 on the $60 Business Performance Plan with a $5 handset repayment per month (after using an included MRO Bonus) for 24 months with $600 worth of standard national calls and MMS plus unlimited text messaging to standard Australian numbers and 1GB of data for use in Australia. Min cost over 24 months is $1,560 ($65/mth) (2 minute standard call $2.38, excess data usage $0.10/MB).

    Hey Dan,
The wait is like forever… By when do you think it will be available for a pre-order?
Also, I have an optus prepaid currently and for sure is moving to Telstra… Will I be able to do a pre-order as I am having an optus currently or will I have to do something in advance?

  2. Dave says:

Feeling much disappoint in Telstra over no release of Nokia 920.

  3. Dean says:

I am sick of hearing everybody crying about plan prices and data allowances. Telstra is not “Jim’s Budget Telco” and we all use Telstra for a reason. Quality = MONEY

Can’t wait for the Lumia 920, getting sick of my Cyan Lumia 800, color marks too easy.

    • Oreoz says:

Agree completely. If you want huge data allowance and calls then join Vodafail or Droptus. There is a reason we go Telstra! Better coverage and fact it works
I had 2GB of data on Vodafone and was lucky to use 300mb and it wasn’t due to lack of trying.

    • carl says:

Telstra profit to $3.4bn I love new tech but We are Paying MUCH TOO MUCH!

CEO’s Need to think of serving customers and their wait times not just the profit. Share the wealth!

Still love the tech But need more info on release plz

    • dg says:

That’s a rubbish argument -oh, they’re the best so you should get less.

There’s a point when the premium no longer becomes worth paying. It’s also that Telstra has actually reduced the value of their plans from what they were previously providing.

  4. Rocket says:

For all those complaining about a lack of detail from Telstra; I’m over in Seattle at the moment, and AT&T still have no definite release date, so this is NOT a Telstra issue, more likely a Nokia one.

    • Jerry says:

woops, ATT had announced the release detail before 2 hours, come on Telstra, i can’t wait much longer

  5. Julian says:

Okay, we’ve finally got some pricing…now how about a firm release date and some pre-orders?

  6. Elliot says:

Unbelievable. The platform launched on Oct 30 and it takes Telstra a month to launch handsets. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is releasing devices (Rogers in Canada launched on Nov 1). Whoever the product manager for this is within Telstra should be sacked.

[Note to moderator: You keep deleting this, I'll keep posting it. I will post it far and wide, on forums you have no control over. Do the right thing and keep your customers updated and commit to a date instead of keeping us in the dark]

    • Matt says:

      Hey Elliot,

Please keep in mind that this is most likely not a carrier decision. Nokia is at the core of releases around the world and generally prioritize Europe > North America > Oceania. At most Telstra could maybe get it out a week earlier then planned but chances are they need time to organize the release and make it smoothly.

However this is a lot better than the past, Nokia generally leave Australia pretty far behind and considering we (if all goes as planned) are going to get this phone in under a month from the first release I’d say that’s decent and an improvement from Nokia. Hopefully one day Nokia takes Australia seriously and we can get an early release.

But seriously I’m dying for this phone!

    • Julian says:

This plays right into the hands of HTC. The HTC 8x, which is the Windows 8 Phone that Steve Ballmer uses, is looking like a better proposition every day…especially now that Nokia has announced it will make Nokia Drive available to all Windows Phone 8 manufacturers!

    • peter says:

The problem is the lack of information, the failure of Nokia and the carriers to communicate with the market especially considering the illogical nature of Nokia’s launch.

See if this was an Apple launch the product would be available for sale within hours or days of the event. Instead Nokia has bizarrely said to the world; hey everyone look at this great phone, oh you want it….well about that you’ll have to wait maybe two months and even then we won’t tell you anything at all.

Really people are just going to move to the HTC X8 or other platform just in spite of how badly this has been communicated.

Really Nokia, its not that hard to do a press release. Tell us what’s going on. markets and people forgive if you’ve got some production delays. I’d imagine that floating lens setup is a real bugger to install by hand.

but you know what keep our expectations real.

And Telstra…come on. Whats with the customer service advocay thing? We’re expecting you to go to bat for us. you know what that huge market share and zillion dollar profits have gotta amount to some leverage with key suppliers like Nokia. How bout you guys smash a 6 for the customer and get us an early launch, or at least communicate to us whats going on.

  7. Jeff says:

As far as I know. The cyan model is exclusive to AT&T in the US for 6 months (its also apparently slightly different to run on their network) so I wouldnt expect anyone else to get it til some time after that period has elapsed

  8. djp4nfa says:

Plans are terrible! Premium service, terrible out dated plans. Very disappointed Dan!

  9. Samo says:

I was in a Telstra shop over the weekend and thought I’d ask about whether they’d heard anything about release. The response I got was “The Lumia 920? Yeah we’re not even sure if we’re getting that.”

Now I know the phone isn’t out yet and salesman are only interested in what they can sell now, but surely they’d have some education about their exclusive handsets? Not very confidence inspiring for a current Optus customer who’s considering his return to Telstra…..

    • Hi Samo. Sorry to hear that. Can you help me with the time and name of the store so I can pass on the feedback to the manager? Thanks, Brendan

    • Samo says:

      Hi Brendan,

It was Highpoint on Tuesday afternoon, probably around 2pmish

      Cheers

    • Ali says:

Hey Brendan, same situation in Rockdale Plaza, Sydney. Seriously though this whole Windows Phone thing is an uphill battle with Telstra seriously in bed with Android world. I reckon NOKIA would have sold way, wayyyyyyyyyy more offering Lumia 920′s on Vodafail. Every chump I know goes for the iFruit5 upgrade and don’t care about the lack of reception/signal purely coz it’s cheaper. I love Telstra purely due to the good reception and I understand the value, but for the ecosystem’s sake, I reckon NOKIA stuffed up on this one.

  10. Nikki says:

Come on Telstra, you promised pre-orders this week, and the week is nearly over! I can’t stop myself from refreshing the Whirlpool thread and this page every five minutes looking for updates. I NEED MY LIFE BACK!

  11. bloke says:

Telstra, please hurry with the Nokia, I will not curse someone else with this phone, I will use it to test the strength of the bricks the house is made from!

  12. james says:

    Come on Telstra!!

  13. james says:

I really want this phone! It shouldn’t be this hard to availability details. people want to buy it, sell it to us!

  14. Ben says:

I agree with below comments about quality of service and coverage, and am with Telstra paying more than I could be woth other telco’s for that very reason, BUT, I do think they could show some flexibility within their plans – ie drop calls to add data and vise versa. Or 2 standard plans per price group – one biased to calls and the other to data. Personally I have a 3 gb $400 call plan right now – never hit my call cap but almost every month go over 1 gb data, and most times over 2. It’s a personal preference yes but good sized data plans cost $30 on top of the phone plan, and to get 2gb included is $35 more than lowest plan and $900 calls…… Customer choice and flexibility would be welcomed with open arms from this consumer.

  15. Ben says:

Aside from my previous rant, I am shaking in anticipation over the 920, WP8, and 4G. Come on Nokia – lets have it already ;-)

    • Jacob says:

      Hi Ben,
I thought I was the only one… Good to know there is one more person….

  16. Tyler Durden says:

Hey Telstra, could you possibly be any less forthcoming with information about this phone? My current phone is dying and want a new one ASAP. I’m not going to buy anything else but a 920, but they doesn’t mean I have to buy it from you. I will just order it unlocked from somewhere if you can’t give us some real and hard dates SOON.

  17. Steve says:

I asked at the Knox city Telstra shop, when the Windows Phone was being released, and he said “wow! That’s a curve ball!”. Such a shame that the staff don’t know and support these phones and os

  18. Michael Proctor says:

Will the 920 get the Rural Tick (blue tick)?

  19. KD says:

I have just been told that Telstra is releasing it on Tuesday!!! No preorders as well!!!

  20. Steve says:

    *throws money at monitor.

  21. DebbyAnne says:

I have also been surprised at the inconsistent information from the shop and this site. I am also confused at the delay because I can buy an unlocked 920 form a reputable ebay seller for $559 in black and less in the cyan. I have purchased form this Australian seller before, but as my current plan is about to expire woudl prefer to get one from Telstra on new plan.
I’m just feeling a little fed up with it all.

  22. Mark says:

So another Australian company has already begun shipping the Lumia 920 before Telstra, the exclusive carrier, can even provide an update on availability? Nice marketing plan you’ve got there.

  23. Shpeshal Ed says:

I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a phone as much as I am to this one.

Having a malfunctioning iPhone 4 doesn’t help of course. Makes the wait more painful.

  24. Julian says:

The LG Nexus 4 is available tomorrow for $349 unlocked in Australia…very tempting!

  25. Amber says:

Harvey Norman just changed date to Nov 30th, for the black, others are December.Looks like another 2+ weeks, unless you import ones that don’t work properley here . . . sad, just sad….

  26. Mike says:

Makes me laugh that the ‘community support manager’ is concerned over *one* Telstra shop not having the 920 – seriously, I have been to FOUR Telstra shops in the last month (for various reasons) and each time, when I asked about the 920, NOT ONE SINGLE STAFF MEMBER COULD GIVE ME *ANY* DETAILS OR KNEW *ANYTHNG* ABOUT THE PHONE!!

Telstra, why do you insist on not empowering your employees to have at least some decent info on these new phones?! Exactly the same happened 2 years ago when I wanted an HTC HD7 and I got so frustrated with the delays and utter lack of info from Telstra I bought a Mozart which I’ve hated ever since (only the handset, not WP7 which I love).

I think most will agree that Telstra has picked it’s game up in so many ways over the last 2-3 years but it’s still so damned frustrating to deal with in so many ways – they simply have to improve the way they manage these new phone releases and stop keeping your loyal cvustomers in the dark for so long!

I swear if it wasn’t for having the best 3G/4G networks I swear you wouldn’t have ANY mobile customers!

And ***please*** fix the plans for this phone – 1GB IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH DATA FOR MOST USERS OF THIS PHONE!!!!

  27. Luke says:

The Lumia 920 is already available for preorder on Business plans and includes a free JBL Playup speaker, see https://www.telstra.com.au/online-shop/business/business-phone-product.cfm?device=nokia-lumia-920&plantype=tbpp-60-handset&flow=bizPostpaid

“Pre-order the Nokia Lumia 920 online on a business performance plan before 26 November 2012 and receive a free JBL PlayUp speaker (RRP $199) with your purchase. Delivery from 27th November”

Why isn’t this available on consumer plans yet?

  28. Chuck says:

    At last the pre-orders start!

  29. KD says:

Just pre-ordered my 920 from Telstra!!!

  30. SmileyMofo says:

Pre-Orders all sold out!! By 4:00 PM SA time they were done! We need more!

  31. Tyler Durden says:

Hey I hear Telstra put up the pre-orders. Who were the lucky 10 people that managed to get one???? How about making some real numbers available for pre-order?

  32. Reef Shackleton says:

    Hi folks
As per someone else’s earlier question – any news on whether it’s getting a blue tick or not? Deal breaker for us regional folks!

  33. James C says:

I managed to preorder mine as soon as I got the email, bring on the 27th :)

  34. Steven Reid says:

    8 Sleeps!

  35. andrew says:

On-line in Australia it can be had for $799 unlocked. Telstra should at least match this outright price to encourage customers to stay with them on pre-paid.
Alternatively offer the first month free. Lets not forget Optus is rolling out 4G. If you live somewhere outside a 4G area (which is still most of us) there are plenty of other great pre-paid deals elsewhere.

  36. TheStav says:

I read somewhere Telstra may be selling the 920 for $859, which is a bit rich when on-line you can buy it for $799.
Telstra should offer it’s pre-paid and post-paid customers the first month free to encourage them to either stay with you or attract new people.
With Optus now rolling out 4G and the fact that most of us still live outside 4G designated zones, there are plenty of great 3G pre-paid deals out there.

  37. Jonathan says:

Will yellow be available in stores tomorrow also? If not when and where can I get one asap? Outright buy. Thanks

  38. Canecia says:

My partner just went into a Telstra shop and was told that they are not offering outright purchases. Why bother giving us an outright price if we can’t actually get one outright?

  39. Chuck says:

What is going on!!! I pre-ordered within 10 mins of the preorder email arriving, I even received an email yesterday saying shipping was delayed due to supply of the free JBL speaker, so all seemed on track.

Today I get an email saying Telstra is out of stock and I’ll receive another email when stock arrives. This system stinks to hgh heaven. Seriously cheesed off!!!

    • Chuck says:

Called Telstra and have been told the email is an error. Now I’m not real sure what to believe.

  40. CAS FNQ says:

I received no notification of pre-orders being available. Every time I asked at the local Telstra Business Dealership they said either “Don’t think we are going to get that” or just a blank “Don’t know…”.

I finally spoke to the Manager and he said “yes” but wasn’t sure when.

Find the posts today to find out it launched today (talk about ‘soft-launch’!! Got straight on to Telstra Business Store and of course they don’t have any (and don’t know time frame).

How many stores really got stock today?

Now I’m still waiting, waiting, waiting….

Haven’t renewed my contract for 4 months waiting for this!

  41. Henry says:

I’ve had mine since Monday. I got it from allphones outright for $710. A bit more than Telstra but worth it because at least they knew about the phone!

I love it by the way :)

  42. SmileyMofo says:

In Adelaide, I rang almost every store today. I rang the Rundle mall store at 9:00 AM , they said they were getting stock at 9:30, call back at 10:00, rang back at 9:50 AM – all gone. So after calling pretty much every store in adelaide i found out most stores got 2, max 3 phones. that is a joke. THe story was though that all the stock from Nokia was taken up by pre-orders. Non telstra stores (i.e. not owned by Telstra) had no stock, and werent expecting any until mid december. All stores reported they were very frustrated and that they had all had a huge amount of demand for them today. So its another missed opportunity by Telstra / Nokia (Telstra kept saying in their defence that Nokia just didnt supply enough). I managed to get one put on hold at a store that had courier issues, and werent getting their three until tomorrow morning, but mind you it was like the 9th store i called, and it was the last one available.

  43. Julian says:

The release of the Nokia 920 by Telstra has been such a complete schemozzle that I’m actually going to wait now until January 30 and pick myself up a BlackBerry 10!

  44. Tyler Durden says:

I missed out on the preorder. Went to a store yesterday, they were sent 1 black one. Around the corner another store, 2 black ones. They check other stock and found a red one cross town for me. Picked it up last night and am VERY happy with it. Nice improvements from 7.5 and the Nokia looks great and the size fits very nicely in my hand.

  45. Jonathan says:

Success. Got one from local Harvey Norman store – and yellow at that. So they are around and in colours additional to black… All the local Telstra and JB stores sold out within first hour and offering waiting lists for next shipment.

Worth noting the availability issue is not a Telstra issue – the supply of this phone world wide has been highly constrained. Maybe AU didn’t get a big first shipment proportionately to WW, but that’s unlikely Telstra’s call.

And the obvious part – the phone is spectacular, and WP8 seems well worth the wait. Integration across win8 and surface with the Microsoft account, office and related apps is first class. Stay the course…

  46. Douglas says:

My 920 is 1week old, bought it outright.
    Screen frozen today, timing?
Tried multiple resets from net but no uck. Called Telstra , best they could do was come into the shop in 2 days, 27/12/12!!
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  47. Jonathan says:

Try holding power and volume down together for a few seconds to force restart. I’ve had to do this once when it stalled on the Nokia boot screen.

  48. Jules says:

Don’t you guys wished you’d bought an HTC 8X now?!
