App of the week: Glympse – Free location-based service application
Filed under: Android, app of the week, Apple, BlackBerry, iOS, maps, Windows Phone
With over 500 thousand apps now in the app store, there are a lot of cool apps out there, but I am still going to say that this is definitely one of the coolest apps that exists.
The core feature of the app is the ability to send someone a “Glympse” of where you are, and continue to share your real-time location as you move around.
Basically when you are meeting someone, somewhere, just send them a Glympse, so they can track where you are, how fast you are moving, and even get an estimated time of arrival (ETA) predicted by the app. Now they can literally watch you approaching the destination on their phone. So if you are running late or early, your friend will now know exactly where you are. Since discovering this app, when I’m meeting someone, there is no longer a need to constantly call each other – ‘Where are you?’ ‘How far away are you?’.

Best thing is it’s free to download and available on all major mobile operating systems. Next time you are meeting up with a friend impress them by sending them Glympes!
PS. As the app heavily relies on data transfer, it is optimized when used with a high performing network provider – I recommend Telstra.
Download Glympse now and tell us what you think.

I love this app! Definitely very useful when meeting friends.
Sounds good to me. I’ve just downloaded it and will share with my family. If I had a dollar for everytime we’re meeting somewhere new and all get confused by the new location I’d be a wealthy man. This should do the trick and works on all phones. Awesome.
Cheers guys. You can send Glympes via email too. There’s probably other features I haven’t explored or used as well.
One con is that it drains your battery.
Assuming all your friends have smart phones, sending this thing never fails to impress
. Enjoy.
What will be great is if the app could automatically send a Glympse when the originator reaches a certain geographic location. For example I have to SMS my wife everytime I am about to leave work. How good would it be that Glymse sends my location to her as soon as I reach the station.
I think i should go download this app now…seem interesting!
Pretty cool app! Great work Shanen
Good point Amrit – what you are saying is, scheduled / auto-triggered Glympses. Like even every day 5.35pm it would send a Glympse to your wife or mum or whoever so you don’t have to do it manually. Or, everytime you leave work, it sends a Glympse off. Fair idea. I think the technology is there, they may not have thought about it. Send them the idea!
I think there are other apps that share your location, and ‘check-ins’. But the uniqueness about this one is the real time sharing, and also the ability to ‘expire’ shares with people.
