Telstra launches services on the NBN in Tasmania
On the winding road to Triabunna, just over an hour’s drive from Hobart through rolling bush clad hills, the string of new looking power poles sport a newer cable that sits a meter below the powerlines. It’s neat arrangement that brings fibre to the seaside town of 500 households, one of the first two sites where we launched Telstra services on the NBN for Tasmanians on Monday.
The arrival of the NBN has been much welcomed by the people of Triabunna, for the boost it gives their community and the fresh opportunities it brings.
Speaking at our media launch, Jenifer Crawford, Acting Mayor of Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, said: “Being the first commercial release in Tasmania of the NBN to an entire community, opens up a fabulous opportunity for Triabunna especially in the areas of business, healthcare and education.”
“We hope that businesses will be attracted to set up here in Triabunna. As a community, we need to rise to the challenge and take advantage of being one of the first towns in Tasmania to be connected to the NBN.”
Jane Enniss, resident of Triabunna was the first customer for our services on the NBN in Tasmania, and a new Telstra customer. Jane signed up for a super fast T-Bundle on Monday, and said, “I’ve been hanging out for the NBN to go live here – I’m a big Facebook and internet user. Living in Triabunna, I think it’s fantastic that we’ll be able to have the really fast speeds.”
In Sorell, the second NBN-enabled location that’s down the A3, 30 minutes out of Hobart, we have a new Telstra store.
In Triabunna, we rolled Telstra’s first “Store on Wheels” into town to answer people’s questions, the old fashioned way, face to face. Parked in a vacant grassy lot next door to the chemist, it’s a fully fledged Telstra store, hooked up to the NBN, and will be there for two weeks. The rooster over the back fence is excited by the arrival of his new neighbours, and is very vocal in his support, bringing everyone’s attention to our presence.
The Store on Wheels will be permanently based in Tasmania, and will be progressively rolled right into the heart of NBN enabled areas where we don’t have a retail presence.
Across Tasmania we have more than 750 staff, excited to begin offering Telstra services on the NBN in towns where they live and work. As the NBN launch State – the NBN roll-out began in Tasmania in July 2009 – and the first State where the NBN will be rolled out in its entirety, we expect there to be a lot of interest, and customers will have a lot of questions.
We’ve had a warm welcome in Triabunna and Sorell and look forward to getting out there to meet customers in other Tasmania sites as they become ready for service.

Why is it that living in one of the first towns to receive the NBN network in Tasmania over a year ago….that we still have to wait for TELSTRA to come on board with offers for our area??
These other places came on much later and are already being offered plans. I have the NBN equipment stuck on my wall and wired up ready to go but its just there collecting dust.
I dont begrudge any of the other areas that already have Telstra NBN offers but come on TELSTRA get your act together and come and offer us some plans.
Smithton, Scottsdale and another town that slips my memory for now were those first towns in Tassie to get NBN connected…but neither of these 2 towns you are offering plans to.
Other companies are yes…but I dont want to change. I have been a TELSTRA customer all my life and so are other members of my family. Must you lose loyal customers before you listen??
