App of the week: What makes Evernote so useful?

When you travel as much as I do it’s important to find ways to stay organised and not overload the suitcase.

Ed note: Peter is a keen social media follower and was chosen from our Google+ poll recently, to appear here as a guest blogger on Telstra Exchange. We hope you enjoy his review.

This is where Evernote – a cross-platform, cloud based multi-media notebook system – comes into its own.  I can store almost anything I want, tagged and searchable any time I have access to my mobile phone, tablet or anything with a web browser and if that isn’t enough I can share my notebooks with friends and family.

So how can it help organise your life?  What makes Evernote so useful?

Evernote App screen shotHow many times have you been out and about and seen something that captures your attention?  It might be a recipe in a magazine, or it could be an advertisement for a new gadget or destination you’d love to travel to.  Rather than have to pull out a pen and paper and frantically scribble I can just pull out my mobile phone, take a quick photograph and add a couple of tags.  That’s it.  In the background Evernote then finds the text in that photograph, making  it searchable, and when I get to my hotel I can quickly call it up on my phone or laptop and take my time reading through it.

Let’s say I liked the destination I’d snapped that advert for. From here Evernote just gets better – I can start to research the destination further in my web browser, finding places to stay, things to do, how to get there.  Using Evernote’s “Clipper” tool I can easily add those pages, or bits of those pages, into your notebook along with that original advert.

Now the sharing capability comes into its own – I can simply click share and immediately the girlfriend will be able to see, wherever she is, all the details of the potential trip displayed in all their glory.

Evernote was pre-installed on my Sony VAIO when I bought it about six months ago and whilst I was hesitant to try it at first – dismissing it as something I’d never use – I can’t live without it these days.

With Evernote installed on both my computer and my Android-powered smartphone, I have now built-up a large collection of notes that I can access anywhere… I’d even go as far as saying Evernote is one of the most valuable applications/programs I use!

Wow, great article Peter. You certainly sound like you do travel a lot. I guess you are a PPS Solitaire member and all?
Have you found any apps that work well for tracking your frequent flyer status? I heard there are some that track how close to the distance of the moon you have flow over a 12 month period. That would be cool to monitor and annoy your friends and colleagues with! Keep the blogs coming!

I only use about 3-4 apps on a daily basis. Evernote is one of them. I have it installed on my galaxy s2, asus transformer and computer. This app is perfect for note-taking on the fly and the easy syncing ability makes it extremely useful.

    Great article btw peter
