Telstra QWERTY- Touch (T60) review
Filed under: consumer review, mobile handsets, technology
Stuck for a last minute stocking stuffer? Why not take a look at the (aptly named) Telstra QWERTY-Touch? This $129 prepaid phone packs a lot of punch.
Featuring a QWERTY keyboard and 2.6” QVGA capacitive touch colour screen (hence the name…), Android 2.3 operating system, an FM Radio and media player, the QWERTY-Touch is available in 2 colours – Raven Black and Flamingo Pink.
The keyboard is great on the QWERTY-Touch. Typing text messages and emails is as good an experience as on far more expensive handsets, and in some cases – a lot better. The touch screen also responds well – but screen size may not suite everyone. Using WhereiS® Navigator, I was able to adequately expand the screen to read street names.
From the Android Market I downloaded a couple of free apps, and then jumped onto Facebook® to see what my friends were up to. Then I jumped onto Mobile FOXTEL from Telstra to watch the news and some sport. I found the video from Foxtel was clear and did not suffer from a small screen at all. Both sound and vision were very clear.
Next the obligatory games were downloaded – and even though I am used to larger screen devices these days, I found the gaming experience to be up to standard.
The QWERTY-Touch is also expandable – up to 32GB of expandable memory via a MicroSD card to store your favourite music. Of course, the standard features of speakerphone, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, alarm, calendar, stopwatch and voice recorder are included.
Talk time is up to 180 minutes and standby time up to 200 hour, and the QWERTY-Touch weighs 126g. Running on the Next G® network, the QWERTY-Touch has HSPDA 7.2mbps and has a 2 mega-pixel camera.
All up, a great entry level Android smartphone just waiting for you to take home.

Do you need to set up the email account before you start to use the qwerty touch? The first thing that came up was an email address that I don’t have, I do have a hotmail account. But no idea how to use this phone as no instruction booklet in the box.
Cheers
Joy
you dont have to have a google email account (thats what im assuming your talking about) its just an added feature, down the bottom you can click to skip that step.
Just bought one, been debloked, would now love to use it but in French ! Maybe someone can tell me how ?
Regards
If someone can tell me how to download french language on it it would be great
where can i get a instruction booklet so i can use this qwerky phone
Hello Lynn, Here is the manual. You can download the Telstra QWERTY- Touch (T60) instruction manual here.
your phone is stupid and how do i work it if there is no manual to tell me how to work it dumb dumb dumb stupid stupid dumb i think that i will take it back i cant even get the menu up
I just emailed you a manual. Hope this helps.
Phone comes with ‘built in’ email account MobileEmail@MyEmail.telstra.com which cannot be removed (8 consultants and 95 minutes later…) and seems to be used primarily to deliver unsolicited product offers from Telstra, aka spam. You can set this account to never communicate, but cannot remove it. It’s a pretty cynical marketing ploy that I’ve not seen on any other Telstra phones, and the only blemish on what is otherwise a decent basic smartphone.
No. Not talking about gmail. I called ZTE and they assure me its added to the phone by request fron Telstra and its not possible to remove. Sure enough, the only thing our users ever get at that forced address is Telstra product offers (spam).
hey i brought myself a telstra qwerty touch right and it said that i need to have a gmail account and i do but then it says that i have to connect to wifi and it wont let me connect soo can any one please help me on what to do

Can you use Free Facebook with this phone or do you need credit??
Yes, there is a Free Facebook. The URL is 0.facebook.com, but don’t use it when you have credit as it sucks it all up quickly
Do you have to pay for Facebook or any other social networks? Or does it come out of your credit?
How can I unlock the phone using the qwerty keyboard?
did you ever find out how to unlock your phone using the keyboard? my screens frozen
How do you set the alarm? I have looked at the manual but it doesn’t say how to set the alarm?
is there any way to get a case for this phone, i have looked just about every where and cant find one. im really worried about dropping it?
I’m with you Nerylie, how can anyone sell a phone without a manual? Have had to get adult children to guide me through and even they had trouble. Not good enough, have had to download 99 pages of details to work out how to do basic things, eg receive and send calls and txt messages. Do not even want it for complicated things eg:net etc. Are all the people who sell these things computer \geeks\ because the rest of are not!!
Hi Anne. I appreciate you taking the time to send this feedback through. Many of the new devices coming into the market will have the user manual pre-installed on the handset. The reason that these devices only have a manual available for download are:
-Reducing the environmental footprint on the device
-Reducing the size of the packaging for the handset (Again reduces the environmental footprint)
-Having the manual pre-installed on the handset also means that it is accessible when the end user needs it rather than being away from their manual and they require troubleshooting.
I have purchased a qwerty t60 and have no idea how to drive it because it doesn’t have a hand book. can some one give me some idea on how to obtain one
Hello Brad, Here is a digital copy of the manual. You can download the Telstra QWERTY- Touch (T60) instruction manual here.
Mine does not start up. It gets stuck on the Telstra logo for a few minutes then retries continuously. Is there something I can do or do I need to return it.
mines has been doing the same. it’s been doing it for hours
On the bottom left hand corner there is a little gap, get a 5c piece and pry it open. It will be a little tight at first but don’t worry.
It will use all of your credit, even if your not using the phone. I just lost 20 bucks over night cause I left the network on. Even if you use 0.facebook.com, it still uses your credit. I hate this phone. Its crap. I prefer a brick phone that will let me use facebook for free.

I’m now unable to hear any calls on my T60 – BUT, if I turn on “speaker” it’s audible. Not too private! How can I get it to work properly
My screens frozen and I need to use a pattern password to get into my phone, but the screen won’t respond. is there anyway to unlock my phone using the keypad?
This is crap! Bought it on Friday, won’t turn on on Monday! Gets stuck on Telstra screen! Get your act together Telstra, this is very poor!

How do you fix the phone of it doesn’t read you sim card.?
I charge my battery every night, but the battery hardly lasts through the day even though I don’t use the phone ie I had one text today and nothing else. Why is this happening. I have not to my knowledge connected Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or GPS. If they are connected explain how to disconnect. Could there be any other cause.
Hi Margaret,
Have you visited one of our Telstra stores? We have some great experts in there who could definitely help out.
Thanks,
Sunil

This phone is awesome, I’m on it now. I honestly love it so much. Hah
Great phone, have had no problems with it at all.
Just need to know if you buy covers and screen covers for them
Thanks
Hi Georgia. You could try here http://www.worldofaccessories.com.au
Even though this is an android phone, I can’t find the application ‘Market’ on it. Shouldn’t it have it?
Hi Monique. See the review here. Should have the Market or be renamed to Google Play. Google changed the name a while back and sometimes it updates the icon on it.
Today everytime I have tried to use browser/google certain letters have become shortcuts so the browser goes and if I have pressed D – dialer appears or G – Gmail – how do I get rid of this as I don’t want this function as it restricts the phone.
I recently bought this phone only about 2 months ago and around the same time 7pmish each night I will be texting someone and it will all be fine then I think that they are ignoring me but it turns out the messages just aren’t coming through some reason. And I know that its my phone that’s the problem. They can receive my messages and I can receive calls etc. Then at exactly 4:17am all the message comes through at once! I don’t know whats going on, but I had to get a new phone in the first place because my old phone was doing it which was a Samsung touch phone. Not sure which version. Someone help!

i bought this phone about 1 day ago, plugged it into my charger and it is still charging now!! when i unplug it it just turns off as if it has no battery! i had to get the manual offline, and it says 3-4 hours normally… i know its new and everything but i have no idea how long it is going to take to charge or whether it will every end up working?? please help!
Hi Brooke. Head over to CrowdSupport and ask there.
I have recently purchased a T60 qwerty touch phone. Apart from the lack of a manual (even a basic 4-page manual is better than none), the phone appears to function well.
My main complaint is that it has been impossible to find a protective case / cover for it. I have wasted many hours on foot and on the internet, but the closest I have come was a Blackberry cover, which isn’t really good and the holes etc don’t match up. Telstra’s World of Accessories web site didn’t have one.
My advice is to Telstra, if you plan to market products, you need also to market appropriate accessories. If you can’t do this, don’t enter the marketplace and try to compete with companies that do this well, eg Apple, Samsung etc.
You simply end up frustrating and alienating your customers.
has anyone managed to find a suitable case? please let me know…Jane
I have recently purchased a Telstra qwerty touch and the phone has stopped ringing when a call comes in.
The call arriving symbol THat bottom slider on right of the screen lights up red but no sound is made – it’s not on silent, well not set to silent. THe sound level is high and a test of the ringtone works. I just tested when set to silent and receives a call it does not vibrate yet is set to do so.
Extra note… The phone does make a audible alert tone on receipt of a message.
Do you have any ideas please?
Thanks and regards,
Patrick

Hello Tony, We have a dedicated support area for that. Try over on CrowdSupport. Brendan
I am thinking of buying one of these phones – they are on special at Kmart for $49.
My main concern is the battery life.
Those people who own this phone, would you recommend it?
Also if I do buy it and want to unlock it, how do I do that and how much does it cost?
