Don’t get hooked this Christmas
We had a lot of feedback from customers over the weekend, including the reporting of ‘phishing’ scam emails. Heard of Phishing? Unlike the boat and reel kind, phishing emails are from scammers trying to get personal or financial information from customers – the emails urge the receiver to visit a convincing-looking fake web page and enter personal or financial information.
It’s really important to remember that Telstra and BigPond will never send unsolicited emails asking for you to provide sensitive information via a website – like your passwords, credit card details, personal information or any other account verification.
There are steps you can take to avoid getting caught and here are a few handy hints:
If you receive an email from Telstra or Bigpond asking for personal information, remember:
- Do not reply to it
- Do not open any attachment or click on any embedded links
- Do delete the email from your system
- Do report it using the BigPond’s Misuse form
How can you protect yourself?
- Beware of any email requests for sensitive information
- Don’t click on any links or visit any sites provided by senders you don’t know or trust
- Protect yourself by typing the address of any trusted websites in to your browser yourself, rather than clicking the link
- Never respond to requests for personal information in an unexpected email or pop-up window
- If in doubt, always contact the institution that the sender (or pop-up) claims to represent
- Use a spam filter to help block unsolicited and unwanted email
