Introducing a gateway to the connected home

blog-bigpond-premium-home-network-gateway-banner

Around Australia connected homes are taking shape. We’ve moved from an era where we huddle around a single home PC to access the net to a sophisticated environment where the internet is available to all members of the family across a fast-growing range of screens and devices in many rooms.

It’s an environment where the internet is no longer tethered to one location — it now moves with us around the home thanks to Wi-Fi enabled tablets, smartphones, gaming devices, smart TVs and laptops.

This means information and entertainment is increasingly available on-demand around the home.

Consider the following:

  • The number of Telstra customers using fast ADSL 2+ connections more than doubled in 2011 while the number of consumer customers using fast cable connections almost tripled.
  • In the year to June 2011, the volume of data consumed over the average BigPond fixed internet connections more than doubled.

Faster internet speeds and larger data allowances are important enablers to creating connected homes and these figures show just how rapidly our customers are moving to adopt them.

Another important enabler to building a connected home is technology that gets home devices talking to one another. A home where you can share digital content seamlessly among devices is a home that’s truly connected.

To help Telstra customers create their own connected homes and share content around the home, we’ve launched a new ADSL 2+ home network gateway – a device that acts as an ADSL 2+ modem and a Wi-Fi access point.

The new BigPond Premium ADSL Home Network Gateway comes with the latest N-standard Wi-Fi connectivity which provides better in-home wireless coverage at faster speeds. This means our customers can more reliably share the internet around the home at the same time.

Importantly, BigPond Premium Home Network Gateway is DLNA Certified®. DLNA is a technology standard that allows you to send content to DLNA-enabled devices such as home theatre receivers, smart TVs and games consoles.

A USB slot in the back of the home gateway allows you to plug in a memory stick or shared storage drive. Then, thanks to DLNA, you can share your photos, music and video easily to devices around your home network.

For example, say you’ve just returned from a holiday to Europe. You want to share your holiday snaps with the family. You can save your photos to a USB hard drive (or in tech speak a network attached storage device) and connect it to the Premium Home Network Gateway. Now, using the gateway’s in-built DLNA support, you can access these photos on your DLNA-enabled TV.

Similarly, you can store your music collection on an attached storage device and share it with your home DLNA enabled Wi-Fi. It’s a neat way to get content around the home wirelessly.

The BigPond Premium Home Network Gateway also comes with three ethernet ports. This means you can connect up multiple devices such as T-Box®, PCs, MACs, laptops, smart TV’s and game consoles using fixed cables or network extenders.

There’s also a green mode that reduces power consumption by efficiently managing the Wi-Fi network.

BigPond premium home gateway modem

Thankfully, there’s no need to be a technical expert when setting up the gateway. Simply run the Telstra installation CD to get your internet connection going. Wi-Fi connections can be added by using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Set Up) where you can simply push the WPS soft switch (located at the back of the gateway) then push the WPS button on your WPS capable device to add gadgets to your home Wi-Fi network. This means you won’t need to enter in long serial numbers any more.

Availability and pricing

The self install BigPond Premium ADSL Home Network Gateway is now available for RRP $48 from Telstra Stores, or for just $2 a month for 24 months when you take up the BigPond Broadband Offer.

I live in an area where there is heavy wireless usage. So is there any wireless dual band router (2.4ghz/5ghz) which I can use with Bigpond ADSL2. The list of acceptable routers on the bigpond help page doesn’t seem to have been updated for quite a while.

  2. ian palmer says:

will this device support wi-fi connection to my printer ( wi-fi ) from my iPhone and iPad?my current speed stream router does not.thanks

  3. Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

    @ Steve W.

Whilst I won’t be able to comment on the performance and stability of them, however any retail ADSL dual-band router that has the following “AS/ACIF S041:2″ certification is usable on the BigPond ADSL 2 service.

    @ Ian

yes, as long as the printer software is installed on your iphone and ipad. As an example I am running an HP printer connected via Wi-Fi and have the HP application running on both android and iphone for printing of any documentations.

  4. Any ETA of your new 802.11ac wifi modems?

  5. Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

    @Murray

Wi-Fi 802.11ac is a new Technology and hasn’t been ratified at this point.

However, we will work with our Technology and Engineering teams to assess this new Wi-Fi technology.

  6. John Spencer says:

I have a Thomson wireless modem/router (bigpond supplied). It has a usb port. Can I attach a usb hard drive to share on my network?

  7. Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

    @ John

If the BigPond supplied device is the “TG587 – Premium ADSL HNG”, then you will be able to attach a USB hard drive to share on your network.

  8. Flash says:

    Technicolor? Really? Color… just sigh.

    Telstra is now illiterate!

    • John Chambers says:

Flash – not sure what you are saying here? you dont like the spelling of our partners brand name?

  9. Wayne says:

Ive just apdated to the premium gateway. Do I need to buy the optional wi-fi adapter to connect to all the gadgets in the house? e.g. iphone, laptops, playstation-3, Wii, etc. I have the 2wire gateway and it came with a usb adapter, so Im wondering if I need to buy the adapter for the Premium gateway.. Thankyou.

  10. Chi says:

    @Wayne

Most of the devices you have listed have their own Wi-Fi adaptor built in, so you won’t need one for them. USB Wi-Fi adaptors are only needed when your computer doesn’t have a Wi-Fi adaptor built in.

    Hello.
I have the TG587n V3 set up with a external HDD to stream media to my LG TV and Xbox 360 via WIFI. TV is DLNA certified and I have enabled the Media server in the modem settings but the TV nor 360 can find the .MP3 files stored on the HDD. They just say “folder empty” or “Invalid file” (after i have applied managed partition). If i connect the HDD direct to the TV/360, it works fine. Any Ideas???
LG say i need a media server to play the files, I was under the impression the TG587n V3 would do that.
    Thank you.

    • Chi says:

      Hi Adam,

Happy to assist you with your issue. Before that though, would you be able to advise what your current firmware version is on the TG587?

The firmware information is available on the Gateway GUI, on 10.0.0.138.

In the mean time, could you try the following if you haven’t already:

      - Log into the gateway on 10.0.0.138
      - Click on ‘Toolbox’ > ‘Content Sharing’ > ‘Configure’ (top right hand corner)
      - Now with your USB HDD attached to the gateway, in the ‘UPnP AV Media Server’ section, click on “Rebuild” next to ‘Rebuild Media Database’

*Note: This may take some time depending on the number of media files you have on your hard drive.

      - When the gateway is ready, it will display ‘OK’ on the Database Status

Once completed, retry to access the content on the USB HDD via your LG TV.

Could you post your response over at CrowdSupport “http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Modems-Hardware/bd-p/Modems”, so that any fixes will benefit other customers?

      Regards,
      Chi

      Hello Chi.

      Thank you for your assistance.

      The firmware version is 8.4.4.J
It displays “ok” but unfortunatly still no luck.

      Thank you.

i have a thompsom TG782T adsl telstra modem I get wifi to my TV and PS3 ,but no WIFI to my htc and samsung smart phones and sumsung tablet.Do i need a new modem or can i buy an after market one .thanks

    • Chi says:

      @ phil

Quick question on your HTC and Samsung devices, are they able to see the TG782T SSID (Wireless name)?

Considering that your TV and PS3 are able to connect to the gateway via Wi-Fi the gateway itself is functional, so you may not need a new modem.

However please note the TG782T is only using Wi-Fi 802.11g.

      Chi

  13. Adam says:

    Chi.
    It’s a LG 50px950.
    Thank you.

    • Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

      Adam,

I will see if I can get access to an LG TV of that model. In the meantime, are you able to see if you can use other 3rd party DLNA clients/applications, such as XBMC on a PC/Mac, to try accessing the content via the DLNA Media Server on the gateway?

      Regards,
      Chi

  14. phil says:

thanks for your response. We have put the SSID address in all devices they all say not in range. We have used wifi on all devices at other places with no worries.I have contacted all tech supports from all three companys and everyone is happy that their products are working fine,is there a compatibilty problem between the andriod devices and the telstra modem.Would the premium gateway modem help. Thanks phil

    • Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

      Phil,

In this instance the Premium ADSL HNG gateway will definitely be of help, as the Premium Gateway uses 802.11n with a (2×2) antenna configuration.

Most of your android based devices, will have no issues with connecting to it.

With regards to your question about incompatibility between the TG782 and android devices, I will get that investigated.

      Regards,
      Chi

    • Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

      Phil,

I have just tested the TG782 Wi-Fi connection with a Google Nexus running ICS.

I was able to set up the connection between the phone and the gateway, using the following combinations:

      - Default Wi-Fi set up on the TG782T, which is ‘Mixed mode’ for the encryption
      - Changed to WPA2 only, connection was ok
      - Changed to WPA only, connection was ok

However the distance that I tested the connection on is very short, so the range related issue you were mentioning will most likely get addressed with the Premium ADSL HNG.

      Regards,
      Chi

  15. Adam says:

    Chi.
I am able to make it work using Nero home server over the wifi network. But I don’t want to always have a PC on when I already have a HDD connected to the router.

  16. Michael Roth says:

I currently have a motorola Modem SB 5100 Series. I want to connect an i-Pad and was advised to purchase a
Home Network Gateway Premium Wi-Fi Modem for $48.
I have cable connection and was told by BigPond Technical support that this device will work on ADSL and cable. Is this correct?

    • Chi (Telstra product manager) says:

      Michael,

The Premium ADSL Home Network Gateway is a device specifically developed for ADSl customers.

For Cable customers, to support your Wi-Fi requirements, you can obtain the CGD24N – Cable Home Network Gateway through your BigPond Self Care portal.

The CGD24N contains the latest 802.11 – Wi-Fi N technology supporting most in market Tablets, such as i-Pad.

      Regards,
      Chi

  17. Chris Wellfare says:

Could you please advise on whether the offered modem/router is dual band and is the 802.11n classification an older draft model as I don’t see that in the specifications.
Also, I am looking to upgrade from and older Belkin 802.11g and would like to do more HDD streaming. Currently we are connected to normal household wifi traffic from laptops, iPhones and iPad as well as business use on a desktop. It can get quite busy with traffic and our current router clogs up and I have to switch it off occasionally as it builds up a memory cache. Is the modem router offered capable of performing at this higher level? Regards

    • Chi says:

      Chris,

The ADSL Premium HNG is a single band 802.11 N (Wi-Fi Certified) on the 2.4GHz frequency.

With the Wi-Fi 802.11 N certification the gateway is also compliant with WMM (Wireless Multimedia). This technology benefits users wanting to do more media streaming on Wi-Fi.

The gateway overall architecture will be able to handle the devices you have mentioned in your post.

There is more details and feedback of other users on this gateway in our CrowdSupport forum.

      Regards,
      Chi

    Hi,

I bought the technicolor TG587n V3 as I was assured by the sales guy instore that I could just plug my bigpond ultimate USB device into the back and Id be good to go (no landline required) and I would have WIFI through my whole house.. I just cant get it to work! Have I been given the wrong information? are they designed to work together? If not of course I will be going back and demanding a refund.

    Cheers, Justin

    • Chi says:

      Hi Justin,

The Technicolor TG587nV3 gateway is to be used for Telstra BigPond ADSL services.

However, with the set up that you are asking, yes it is possible to connect up your BigPond Ultimate USB dongle (assuming it’s the dongle – Sierra 312U or Sierra 320) device to the gateway and share your mobile broadband service that way. The ADSL Gateway must have the 8.4.4.J firmware in order to support the BigPond 4G USB dongles

Please note, that our Technical support team however may not be able to provide you any troubleshooting if, your internet connectivity doesn’t work, as the gateway is developed for the ADSL services.

      Regards,
      Chi

  19. Adrian says:

I have a technicolor TG587n v3 and am trying to connect a Canon iP4200 USB printer to it that I can print to from my laptops (one mac, one windows). Can you help by advising:
in the Gateway toolbox, content sharing, do I need FTP server Enabled?
On the mac (using the Add printer window): If I choose “Windows” it brings up the workgroup (“Workgroup”) and server name (“technicolor”) then asks for my name and password. I have tried registering as a guest and with the every user and password I can think of, all with no success.
Alternatively, should I try and ‘find’ the printer using the IP option and if so: Protocol ?Line Printer Daemon or Internet Printing Protocol, and What is the Address?
(I’ll try the windows laptop once I get this sorted)
    Thanks for your help

    • Chi says:

      Hi Adrian,

To your first question about configuring your USB printer. Please visit our Online FAQ here: https://bigpond.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16504/kw/printer

These steps are applicable for the TG587, with the only change being in Step 5. Please use the following IP address: 10.0.0.137 as the printer IP address.

Note: please ensure that the manufacturer supplied drivers for the Printer has been installed on your machine, as the set up will request you to select the drivers for it.

Your second question, about the FTP server enabling:

      - we have identified a bug with the 8.4.4.J firmware, which prevents users to FTP into the USB HDD when set up Content Sharing + Dynamic DNS

We are working with the Vendor to get this addressed with the next firmware release.

      Regards,
      Chi

    • Chi (Telstra Product Manager) says:

      Hi Adrian,

In order to get your USB Canon printer to work please follow the instructions from the following URL: https://bigpond.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16504/kw/printer

This link contains the necessary steps for you to set up your printer. Please note that in ‘Step 5′ – You will need to use the following IP address : 10.0.0.137.

With regards to the FTP server that you are trying to enable, are you trying to access your USB hard drive attached to your gateway, whilst away from the location of the gateway? i.e. on the move from an internet cafe?

If that is the case, currently the firmware version 8.4.4.J contains a ‘bug’ which prevents the remote FTP access to the USB HDD attached to the gateway. This will be rectified with the next release of firmware.

      Regards,
      Chi

Hi just bought a denon Amp and set up does not allow wifi. Have tried to conenct using the ethernet cable but the amp does not recognise, is there anyting I need to do on the modem to allow? thanks

    • Chi says:

      Hi Jacky,

Whilst I do not have access to a Denon AMP, what I can comment on is, that if your AMP can be set up as a DHCP client on a network, than in theory it shouldn’t have any issues.

The Gateway has it’s own DHCP server, which will issue any networked device with an IP address.

The Denon AMP manual, may provide information on how the DHCP client settings can be updated.

      Regards,
      Chi

    • Chi (Telstra Product Manager) says:

      Hi Jacky,

Could you advise what model your Denon Amp is?

If the Denon Amp can be set up to ‘Automatically’ get an IP address assigned, then the gateway will be able to issue an IP address to it.

Once issued it should appear just like any other networked device.

      Regards,
      Chi

  21. dennsi w says:

can the gateway be used with a cable wifi router to be able to extend the wifi area

    • Chi says:

      Hi Dennis,

The Premium ADSL HNG doesn’t have a Wi-Fi repeating function built-in. So it won’t be able to achieve your desired outcome.

We have however got Home Network Extenders available, which will allow you to extend your Cable service from your Cable router, to another location in your home, using a ‘Wired’ connection.

      Options available are:

      - Netgear Powerline Home Network Extenders (connects up to 4 devices, using ethernet)

      - Ruckus Extender, which will allow you to connect a single device

      Regards,
      Chi

    • Chi says:

      hi Dennis,

The Ruckus extender itself is based on Wi-Fi technology, however the device you connect to it, will be using the ethernet cable.

If you need further assistance or information, happy for you to also post comments in CrowdSupport.

      Regards,
      Chi

  22. Johan says:

    Hi

I have just installed my ADSL2+ modem, but the wifi connection setup did not install on my DLink N150 wifi dongle on my computer – it gives an “error installing the SSID and WPA onto the usb wifi” and would not go further.
I guess it is probably not compatible with the Telstra BigPond Premium ADSL Home Network Gateway ??
Any ideas or help will be great
    Thanks

    • Chi says:

      Hi Johan,

Just wanting to confirm something with you, when you are referring to ‘the wifi connection set up did not install’ is that during the installation wizard provided with the Telstra Bigpond Installation wizard?

If that’s the scenario, the Dlink USB adapter drivers are not present on this installation CD.

In order to correctly set this up, you will need to ensure you have the drivers for the DLink Wi-Fi N USB adapter installed first.

Once you have that completed, you will be able configure the SSID and WPA set up, as both the Gateway and the USB adapter are Wi-Fi certified, hence interoperability would have been validated.

Please note also, when you are using the DLink software to configure the USB Wi-Fi adapter details, ensure the WPA key is set to WPA2.

  23. Eoin says:

Can I use an apple airport express (old version) as a wifi range extender with the telstra premium modem? Can’t get wireless at the other end of the house from where the modem is connected.

    Thanks

    • Chi says:

      Hi Eoin,

Generally speaking, yes, your Airport Express will work, however just as a note since I am not sure which generation of the Airport Express you have, the 1st generation is a 802.11 b/g device, so in this instance it may not be providing the best throughput once you have it set up.

The 2nd generation is a 802.11 b/g/ draft N. I am highlighting the Draft N here, which may mean the range extension may not provide the best Wireless N performance.

      Chi

  24. Ryan says:

Can I disable the wifi connection from the Premium HNG modem? If so, how?

    • Chi says:

      Hi Ryan,

Absolutely, there are two ways for you to disable the Wi-Fi connection on the Premium HNG.

Option 1: You can use the ‘ECO’ led button at the front of the gateway, to disable the Wi-Fi connection. When you press the button, it will turn ‘Blue’ indicating the OFF state of your Wi-Fi connection

Option 2 (Using the Gateway web inteface):

Step 1. Log into the Gateway web interface using 10.0.0.138
Step 2. Go to ‘Home Network’ > Interfaces > WLAN
Step 3. Click on ‘Configure’ top right hand corner
Step 4. Uncheck the tick box next to ‘Interface enabled’, under the Configuration header
Step 5. Click on ‘Apply’ at the bottom of the page.

Note: When you do the steps of Option 2, and are connected via Wi-Fi, you will loose connectivity to the web interface and any other in home connected device, will loose connection to the gateway.

    Hi Chi,

I’m using the Technicolor tg587n v3 modem (through BigPond), with a brand new HDD. Tried reformatting it to FAT32, back to NTFS, to no avail. Also tried my Flash Drive, which I used 12 months ago and was picked up on all of my networked machines (Win7),but again, it wasn’t picked up..

I logged in to the modems settings, checked the log files, and the modem does register the external usb device, just doesn’t do anything after that.

I suspect the firmware update may have been the cause, but im not quote sure, and I haven’t found a crowdsupport forum that covers it.

    Thanks for your time,

  27. Chi says:

    Hi Matt,

I will start a thread over in CrowdSupport for the TG587, regarding the USB HDD component.

If you don’t mind, I will copy and paste our current conversation in there, so that all history is captured in the thread.

In the meantime, could you have a look in the gateway and tell me the following detail:

    - Firmware of device

if you could post that over in the CrowdSupport thread, that would be fantastic.

Let me state, and i mean state up fornt that i do not understand even the basics of home wi fi set ups. currently running a netgear router with telstra “stick” as the connection to the network. Is the new BigPond Premium ADSL Home Network Gateway a “simple, reliable, constant” option fo rmy home network as the “domestic executive” and the “billy lids” seem to need “connection” in order to live, breathe and get through every day.
so is this my “solution” does its need “network sticks or any other type of device to enable connection” what else doe i need, what does it cost, etc etc and “Chi”, please feel free to reply in very very simple terms that I might then understand… Thanks sincerely

    • Chi says:

      Russell,

I will do my best to see if I can provide you the information you are after.

Before I do that I would like to confirm a couple of assumptions I made based on your post.

      Assumptions:

      - You do not have a Telephone service with ADSL (Fixed Broadband) on it

      - Your family has multiple devices (Computers/Game Consoles etc) that require internet connection

      - You have a Telstra ‘BigPond’ or ‘Mobile’ Broadband USB dongle (may look like our latest one seen here : http://www.telstra.com.au/internet/mobile-broadband-bigpond-liberty-plans/#tab-usb4g

      - Your family uses the Internet for general web browsing, social media and (maybe, occassional YouTube)?

Now to your actual question if the Premium Home Network Gateway is a ‘Simple/reliable/constant’ option.

If all the assumptions above are correct, then answer is ‘yes’. The premium gateway will be able to cater for the above.

However to truly benefit from the Premium HNG (Home Network Gateway), it is best used with an ADSL service, which will mean you would require a Telephone service. At Telstra we have do have various Bundles that may suit your needs, based on the usage you have. You will be able to find Bundle price points here:
      http://www.telstra.com.au/bundle-save/

If you need any further information, you can find great details over on CrowdSupport (Top right hand corner). Our fantastic consultants will be able to provide you more information or alternatively I am more than happy for you to drop me a line over there as well.

Hello Chi: I setup the 587n v3 HNG a week ago, which came with the latest 8.4.4.J firmware. However, it does not mount an external 3TB WD HDD in NTFS format when connected to a USB port. In the Content Sharing screen, it says “Failed to Mount…”. Since unable to mount, it does not rebuild the media database.

Is NTFS support still faulty in 8.4.4.J firmware version?

  30. Chi says:

    Hi TAhamed,

The TG587 with the 8.4.4.J firmware supports NTFS formatted USB HDD’s.

A couple of quick question, is your 3TB HDD a new HDD with no content on there? Or does it have content on it?

If it does have content on it, do you happen to know how much ‘Free/Unused’ space you still have on your HDD?

If you do not have more than 250MB of free space, the gateway may not be able to mount the the HDD and index it correctly.

If you don’t mind, could you pop your answers over in CrowdSupport, in a new Thread that I have created for all things TG587 + USB HDD?

This will allow our customers to benefit from any solution that we may come up with.

    Regards,

Wanting to know how to remove devices so they cant access the modem. Have a tg587nv3 and have pinged the modem 10.0.0.138/ homedevices / configure/ choosen the affending device / un ticked the WLAN box and clicked apply. After all this nothing happens and the WLAN still remains ticked. How can i remove devices from my home network?

    • Chi says:

      @ Steve,

I have actually looked into your query a bit further. the TG587 with firmware 8.4.4.J, could address the scenario you are trying to resolve.

Since you have already removed all the devices that previously were connected to the gateway from the router via “Home > Home Network > Devices”, please go to the following section to change the following:

“Home > Home Network > Interfaces > WLAN: {Your SSID}”, then go to ‘Configure’ (top right hand corner).

On the following screen under the “Security” section, you can change the ‘Allow New Devices’ drop down option, by changing it to: “New stations are allowed (via registration)”.

Note: Before you apply this change, make sure you have a device that can connect to the gateway via “Ethernet”. You will need it in order to allow your 1st ‘Wi-Fi’ device to connect on the gateway again.

After you have done the above, connect to your gateway using an ethernet connection and go back to the same area:

“Home > Home Network > Interfaces > WLAN: {Your SSID}”, then go to ‘Configure’ (top right hand corner).

Now in order for you to allow any future ‘Wi-Fi’ devices, you will have the option at the bottom of the screen to ‘Search for wireless clients’. Press this option, and then configure the Wi-Fi client on your desired device and connect to the gateway via Wi-Fi.

Note this step will have to be repeated for any additional device that wants to connect via Wi-Fi.

      Chi

  32. Chi says:

    Hi Steve,

If the device had previously been set up to connect to your Gateway via Wi-Fi, then at the moment the only to ensure it won’t connect back to your gateway is to change the Wi-Fi WPA2 key.

At the moment with the current firmware, the 8.4.4.J firmware doesn’t have the MAC address blocking implemented.

We are looking at getting this implemented on the TG587.

Please note, if you do take the option to change the WPA2 key on the gateway, the computer you are using will also loose connectivity (if connected via Wi-Fi). You will need to update the WPA2 key on the computer as well.

    Hope this helps.

I have the TG587nv3 modem/router with bigpond premium home network gateway. I have unsuccessfully tried to get a suitable answer to this question: am i able to get or activate ‘content based filtering’ as a parental control option through this modem/router? I can only seem to access ‘address based filtering’ which is obviously very restrictive. I’ve tried to call bigpond technical support but unfortunately they were unable to help me. The set up and user guide to the TG587nv3 suggests that this is possible through Toolbox on the gateway GUI. I have tried this but only get the address based filtering option. Is anyone able to help me?

    • Chi says:

      @ Alex,

The current firmware 8.4.4.J on the TG587nV3, only has the ‘Web Filtering’ option enabled as part of the Parental Control features.

Content based filtering, and also MAC address isolation, is being looked at and also worked out, how it can be best implemented for TG587 customers.

      Chi

  34. ALEX says:

    Thanks Chi.
That’s a shame. Are you able to give some timeframe on when ‘content base filtering’ may become available on the TG587nV3? Are we talking weeks, months? It’s the only issue that is steering me away from this Telstra recommended modem/router. Also, does the TG587nV3 have remote access capability? i.e. am I able to access the router from another location and enable or disable the parental controls? Again this is something I have not been able to get an answer on. Set up user guide suggests it can be done but not sure how.

    • Chi (Snr Product Manager) says:

      @Alex,

I will endeavour to find out a timeframe, as to when we can have the ‘content based filtering’ on our gateways.

The gateway has the ‘remote management’ capability, however at the current firmware doesn’t have this feature enabled. I will work through with our engineering team and vendors to get timing around when we can get this enabled.

      Regards,
      Chi

  35. ALEX says:

Thanks Chi. Appreciate you following this up. Having content based filtering with time blocks and remote access would certainly make the whole bigpond gateway experience much more personal, enjoyable and would provide the peace of mind that parents often look for. Thanks again.
    Regards,
    Alex

    • ALEX says:

      Hi Chi,
I communicated with you back in early October 2012 whereby I asked about the ability of Telstra’s TG587nV2 modem/router to cater for content based filtering and remote access to parental controls. You indicated back than that the current firmware only allowed for address based filtering and no remote access to parental controls. (Content Based Filtering obviously being preferred over the limitations of Address Based Filtering). You had also indicated that you would follow this up with your engineering team to determine when these features would be possible. Just wondering if there is any update on these issues with this particular modem/router. Thanks. Alex

    • Chi says:

      @ Alex,

Thanks for following this up with me again. I did have the conversation with our engineering team on the 2 items: “Remote Access” and “Content Based Filtering” on the TG587.

The latest firmware 10.3.T.M had one of the features enabled.

      - Remote Accistance (aka Remote Access)

This can be activated in the ‘Toolbox’ section on the Gateway Management Interface.

The “Content Based Filtering” is still being worked through.

      Hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Chi

    Hi Chi
    I have a TG587n v3 and a Sierra Wireless AC753S.
I note your comments above that I should be able to use Mobile Wifi as the internet source for the Technicolour Gateway, however when I plug the sierra device into either USB slot on the TG587n v3 and try to connect under MobileBroadband, it returns the error that it “Cannot find a Telstra mobile device”.
I am not in an ADSL area and need the superior routing skills of the Gateway with the mobile Wifi. I am struggling to find any other help other than that the connection should be automatic. The techies at the Telstra shop told me to look for a sim slot, which I cannot find.
    Thanks in advance

    • Leigh Price says:

Hi Noel – sorry to hear you’re having such trouble. The BigPond tech team can help you out here – 133 933 (free from a Telstra service).

    • Chi says:

      @Noel,

The Sierra Wireless HotSpot – Mobile Broadband Device you have (AC753S), is not compatible with the TG587 to be used to share your broadband access.

The TG587nV3 to date, will only support the following Mobile Broadband USB dongle devices:

      Sierra range: Model #’s

      - 308
      - 312U
      - 320

      ZTE range: Model #’s

    Hi Chi

I’m a bigpond member and would like to upgrade our old 2wire adsl Wifi modem to the new BigPond Premium Home Network Gateway modem, what price is this and am I able to get this from the Telstra shop

    Thanks

    • Chi says:

      Hi Craig,

We have recently replaced the Premium Home Network Gateway with the Telstra T-Gateway for new & existing ADSL customers.

The T-Gateway, which is a later model TG797nV3 is priced at $96 RRP. It is available in Telstra stores and also online via ‘Self Care’ when you log in to ‘My Account’. Please note, if you choose the ‘My Account’ approach to purchase the T-Gateway, a $9.95 delivery fee may be incurred.

If you need more details about the T-Gateway, please check it out here: http://telstra.com.au/internet/home-broadband-bigpond-elite-plans/index.htm

Scroll down on the page, until you see the Gateways available for the service.

  39. Ashur says:

    Hello,

If I plug my external hard drive to the modem Technicolor (587nv3 this is the one that I have).

Can I back up my documents to the external hard drive through the modem / router as well as viewing content through DLNA?

Also, I use Mac. So will it accept iOS format for the hard drive or is it only for Windows?

    Thank you in advance.

    • Chi says:

      Hi Ashur,

Yes, that is possible. If you are going to connect a new external USB hard drive to the modem, please follow the instructions here: https://bigpond.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/21043/kw/usb%2Bhard%2Bdrive/session/L3RpbWUvMTM1NDcwNzQxMi9zaWQvR244U09aY2w%3D

Once you have completed this step, any DLNA certified device on your home network will be able to access media stored on the USB hard drive.

In addition to access and/or store documents/files to the USB hard drive, you can use the ‘Connect to Server…’ function on a Mac, to access the USB hard drive, by connecting to “smb://10.0.0.137/”. This will then open up the ‘Shared’ partition of the USB hard drive used as a file server.

      Chi

    • Ashur says:

Thank you Chi for quick reply.

The first part worked (DLNA). I can now see my content through ps3 and it’s working fine. Thank you :)

BUT, I am still unable to connect through to the external Hard drive to access my content or back up via my macbook.

      This is the error:
There was a problem connecting to the server “10.0.0.138″ (by the way, for some reason my IP is .138 your one said .137 which it did not work).

What else is there I can do ?

Thank you again for helping me through this.

      Kind regards,
      Ashur

    Hi Ashur,

Glad that the Media component via DLNA is working for you.

With regards to getting your Mac to be able to see the USB HDD, can you tell us what version of Mac OS you are running?

I have another thread running over on CrowdSupport “http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Modems-Hardware/All-things-TG587nV3-USB-HDD-related/td-p/83130″. If you don’t mind can you post your issue over there, so that when we work out a fix, the wider community will benefit from it as well?

    Thanks,

  42. Shea says:

Chi can you set up printer sharing on the side usb and ntfs drive on the rear? Also, should the router interfere with that android based xbmc remote connection with the host computer with xbmc?

  43. Chi says:

    Shea,

yes you can use both of the USB host ports for the printer sharing and USB HDD sharing.

With regards to xbmc on your other machine on the same network, as long as the host computer with xbmc doesn’t have the DLNA DMS IP address (10.0.0.137) then there won’t be any conflicts. You can run multiple DLNA media server at home as long as each server has its own IP address.

    hope this helps.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas.

I also have a TG587N v3 premium gateway, the issue I have is that it’s a strict NAT set up, is there any way to change it from Strict NAT to an open NAT configuration at all, or is it just that a strict NAT only.

    • Leigh Price (Blog Editor) says:

Hi Lee, that particular question goes beyond my technical expertise; but you could try checking with other customers on our CrowdSupport forum.

    • Chi [Telstra Employee] says:

      Lee,

Thank you for your post, the Strict NAT topic is a known issue on the TG587. A Firmware has been produced, which is being scheduled into our Operational release schedules, so it can be rolled out.

I will follow up again with our Network team to find out the release schedule for the new firmware. This will address the Strict NAT issue.

Hi, we have a Telstra Thomson TG782T modem which provides our WiFi – it is attached to a splitter shared by our home phone. Whenever the home phone is in use, the WiFi drops out for the duration of the call. Can you assist please?
    Regards, Stuart

    • Leigh Price (Blog Editor) says:

Hi Stuart – sorry to hear that. In this case, it’s best to contact our technical support team on 125 111 so they can run through some tests with you in real time. Our CrowdSupport forum may also have some tips from other customers.

    • Chi [Telstra Employee] says:

      Stuart,

As Leigh has mentioned over at CrowdSupport you may find further information about your current issue.

In the meantime, if you haven’t had a chance to go over to CrowdSupport, can you advise, if your TG782 always had this issue with the Wi-Fi dropping out?

A few more questions around the phone,:

      - is the phone you are using a cordless phone?
      - has that phone always been connected to the same splitter?
      - has you had introduced any other electronic equipment?
      - is your internet service working for any device connected to the gateway using the ethernet port, whilst the call is happening?

if you can copy and paste the above questions with answers over in CrowdSupport, our knowledgeable community and staff will be able to assist you further.

      Hi Gregory,

Thanks for the post and the questions. I notice that it still doesn’t have a response. Have you tried chatting to our dedicated customer service team via their 24×7 Facebook page (see link above) or the @Telstra Twitter handle (although it may be tricky to condense the questions down to 140 characters or less)? I’m not an expert in the area so don’t want to give you false information but they should be able to help you out!

    • Chi (Snr Product Manager) says:

      comvrf/greg,

Currently at Telstra the extenders we supply to our customers are ‘Ruckus Wi-Fi extenders’ and ‘Netgear Powerline extenders’. Please note both of these extenders, will still require you to physically connect your 2nd or 3rd Home network device using Ethernet cables.

However if you are looking for a Wi-Fi extender, you may need purchase an Wi-Fi range extender through a general retailer.

Our gateway works on 802.11 N on the 2.4GHz frequency. If you are looking for one in retail, please ensure you acquire one on supporting that frequency and ideally is also Wi-Fi Certified. The certification ensures that they have been manufactured according to the Wi-Fi standards and are compatible.

      Hope this helps.

I have a Thomson TG782T HNG supplied by telstra, and i was just wondering how i can make a network so the wireless and wired devices to communicate with each other, I.E. all on the same network?

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi Ian,

The gateway TG782T that you are using is a router by default, which means that any device you connect to it (Wired or Wi-Fi) is automatically on the same network. In order to be able to share your content and files around, you will have to set up ‘shared’ partitions using your computer, that you connect to the TG782. This varies from Operating system to Operating system, and you may want to consult the relevant Operating System website for more information around ‘Sharing content/network’. In addition to that the TG782 can support you to have a USB printer shared within your home network. Here are some instructions on how to achieve that : https://bigpond.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16504/kw/printer/session/L3RpbWUvMTM2MjAyNDQ3NC9zaWQvUUF5N3BZamw%3D

Note the refers to the TG587 but is applicable for the TG782 as well.

Hope this all makes sense :)

When I “log on” on to 10.0.0.138 it shows my wifi connected devices (iPad, iPod, Smartphones) on my “bigpond network” and then seperately my computers and printer on ethernet.
What do i need to do so they can all operate together on the network??

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

Hi, just signed up for adsl with standard modem. A friend has offered me their teltra wireless modem but they don’t have the card with the password on it. Have found some info on bottom of modem with SSID , WEp, WPA PSK & Wireless PIN. Just wondering if one of these would be the passwordto connect on my laptop? Thanks.

    • Gigi [Telstra Staff] says:

      Hi there Michelle,

Have a chat to our 24×7 Live Chat Customer Service crew online here: http://bit.ly/TelstraTech or contact Bigpond Support on 133 933 – they’ll be able to help you out with the network password for the gateway.

    • Chi says:

      Michelle,

The details you have found on the bottom of the modem/gateway, are the ones you want to use for the Wi-Fi connection on your Laptop

The SSID is the Wireless name and that should appear in your list of available Wireless Networks on your laptop.

When you select it, then it will ask you for a security key.

The label you described will have both WEP and WPA key details which are identical in this instance. So please enter in those exactly as they appear.

NOTE: your friend may have changed those security key details, if that is the case, you may want to perform a ‘Factory Reset’ on the gateway, by using a pen/pencil and press and hold the ‘RESET’ pin (whilst powered up) for 10 seconds. This will ensure that the gateway will return it’s details back to the original settings matching the Wi-Fi details on the label.
