Let’s walk to work on Friday 16 September

Exercise is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. By simply engaging in 30 minutes of exercise every day you can decrease the risk of developing cancer as well as improving cardiovascular fitness, maintaining bone material density and reducing stress.

Did you know that doing little or no physical activity is associated with a higher risk of developing certain types of cancer?  Physical inactivity is responsible for 14% of colon cancers and 11% of post-menopausal breast cancers – and most likely contributes to many other cancers.

Walk to Work day - Friday 16 SeptemberThis is why I am encouraging my staff to take part in Walk to Work on Friday 16 September. Now in its 13th year this annual event aims to encourage employers and their employees to implement walking and exercise into their daily routine.

It’s easy to become reliant on technology to make our lives easier. Many of us drive to work, sit at a desk all day and email our colleagues instead of getting up and moving around the office.

The Walk to Work initiative is challenging employers and employees alike to push themselves and work towards a more physical and healthy future.

So on Friday 16 September put your health first and walk to work. Too far to walk you say? Not a problem, get off your bus or train a few stops early and walk the rest of the way, spend your lunch break strolling around park, take the stairs and not the lift, make the effort to live a healthier life.

Now, where did I put my joggers?

I’m inspired. I actually have a brainstorming meeting scheduled this arvo so if the weather holds out I’m going to suggest we go for a walk while we talk.

Hi, Walking is a great exercise activity; and I applaud this initiative. For several years now (in conjunction with the Heart Foundation) I have lead a group of walkers called the ‘Telstra Walkie Talkies’. We walk every Tuesday starting at 12:30pm, meeting in front of the Telstra building at 231 Elizabeth Street Sydney. All are welcome. We explore the beauty of Sydney, varying our weekly walks, viewing Hyde Park, The Botanical Gardens, The Domain, and Darling Harbour. As the name implies a big part of our outings are the many lively conversations that take place.
I should also mention that we cater for a wide variety of fitness levels in the group; with some people walking fast, and some walking slow. Regards, John Bellingham

Hi, I walk with John’s “Telstra Walkie Talkies” group as well as doing other exercise during the week and as he mentioned above John’s group have organised a variety of walks through Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and other scenic and informative walks. The company is great, you meet new people and make friends and other walkers are always welcomed.
As John stated above the walks cater for all levels of fitness. Exercise in any form is always good whether it is at snails pace, brisk walk or jogging.
Apart from the obvious benefit of exercise there are also the stress relief and site seeing benefits associated with it.
      Regards
      Peter Maloney

Good idea John, I’ll see you next Tuesday and join in.
