Text and data galore for pre-paid customers

Australians have a ravenous appetite for mobile news, sports and entertainment. Kids these days seem to be able to play Angry Birds on a smart phone practically before they can talk.
Research conducted earlier this year reveals that almost half of mobile phone users in Australia have Internet enabled phones and about 26% access the Internet from their mobile phone each day.

At Telstra, we’re well aware of this trend and as a result I’m really pleased to announce a change to one of our pre-paid mobile offers. From today, we’re changing our 1c Text+ offer to become the Text & Data offer. As you read on, you’ll understand why.
We are significantly increasing the value of the offer – firstly, by removing the daily limit of 100 1c Text per day, which we know our customers will appreciate. Importantly though, we are also adding a massive amount of bonus data and more bonus text to standard Australian numbers, including unlimited text to standard Australian numbers when you recharge $50 or more.
The table below demonstrates how we’ve increased the value on this offer. Click here to view the complete range of recharge benefits.
| Recharge amount | $20 | $30 | $40 | $50 | $60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| = | $20 credit + bonus | $30 credit + bonus | $40 credit + bonus | $50 credit + bonus | $60 credit + bonus |

| 200 bonus texts to standard Australian numbers | 800 bonus texts to standard Australian numbers |

Charging data in 100kB blocks (per session) = bad news. I would switch to this plan (from cap+) if it wasn’t for the difference in data charging.
So how about giving a bit more to Telstra Post Paid customers without increasing monthly charges?
Any reason why only 800mb of bonus data isn’t offered with a $50 recharge on the Prepaid Cap+ when you get 2gb of bonus data with the Prepaid + Weekend and now 3gb with this Text & Data?
Also, if 3gb is equated as (presumably) less than $50 on a recharge, considering you get all those extra txts etc., why is a 4gb data pack at $59?
We all know that the cost of data is vastly overpriced, especially when regarding pre-paid plans, but why the massive discrepancy in data costs to the user when given the choice between several plans that really aren’t that different on the same service?
@Jon: You are missing three important points
1) On cap+ you are charged per 1kB block (per session). With the new text + data offer you are charged per 100kB block (per session). Therefore depending on your usage you may not actually use all your data. On a $30 recharge, you may actually be able to use more on the 400MB cap+ offer than on the 500MB text + data offer.
2) On the cap+ plan you get $220 worth of bonus credit that can be used on almost anything (including international calls and text). With the text + data offer, you get 200 free texts (roughly $50 bonus value)
3) The price points for the cap+ offers are $30, $40, $60 and $100. Using $50 as the example is misleading IMO.
Hi Bogues,
Thanks for your feedback.
We regularly review our Pre-Paid offers to ensure that they offer great value and meet the changing needs of our customers. When we reviewed our 1c Text+ offer (now Text & Data) we recognised that our customers now text and access the Internet from their mobile more than ever before which is why chose to significantly increase the amount of bonus text and data we offer. At the same time, we made our rates similar to our main competitors, so customers can directly compare and see the great value we provide in our new offer inclusions.
If you find your needs change and the Cap+ offer no longer suits you use your phone, you can quickly and easily change your offer by any of the ways I described in the blog
Hi Michael,
We regularly review both our Post Paid plans and Pre-Paid offers and have recently made some great value initiatives for our Post-Paid customers as well. Have you seen the Freedom Connect mobile plans released in March?
i am currently on the text and data plan and my friend is also but its charging me 29c per text ?? why please help
Hi Jamie, You will be charged 29c per SMS to non-Telstra mobiles, after you have used your bonus text. Bonus text only applies to recharges $30 and greater. Hope this answers your question.
Hey, I am currently on the text and data offer, and all of a sudden my mms messages will not send. Standard sms messages work fine, (and do not charge as I recharged $50). There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with the phone itself, and has only ben failing mms for a week or so. Is it possible this offer somehow changed without me knowing about it?

Hi, I’m on the text and data plan and I was wondering is there a way to check how much of the included data you have used? For example if I recharge $30 is there a way to find out how much of the 500mb I’ve used?
Thanks
Hi Gil,
Good question! It may be through the Telstra 24×7 app that is downloadable from the iTunes store and Google Play; but I’m not an expert in that area so I recommend you check with our dedicated customer support team who will be able to chat to you about monitoring your usage and this app. The best way to access that support in an efficient manner is to use the links above and connect with us on Facebook or CrowdSupport. You can also contact our support team 24×7 on Twitter @Telstra.
Thanks very much for your help Gigi
Thanks for this post. I have a hard time finding good content related to this subject when searching most of the time. It’s always good to share and compare opinions when it comes to this kind of removal tool.
