Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Telstra

exchange-samsung-galaxy-s-2-mp

We’re delighted to confirm that Telstra will bring the powerful Samsung GALAXY S II smartphone to our customers in July.

Samsung Galaxy S II handset
Running on the Telstra Next G® network, the GALAXY S II will set new benchmarks for mobile internet speeds in Australia.

Teamed with Australia’s only HSPA+ network, the GALAXY S II will support download speeds up to twice a fast as those available on competitor networks in all capitals and selected areas.

For our customers that means they will be able to surf the mobile web faster, stream video with less buffering, and access their social networks more quickly than ever before.

We think our customers are going to love this super-thin smartphone which features an extraordinarily vivid 4.3-inch screen and one of the best cameras we have seen on a phone.

We will update you on pricing and in-store availability a little closer to launch.

That’s it i cant be bothered – going overseas for mine! If they cant keep to an announced deadline then where else will they fall short. Plus you can buy your phone from the UK (exhange rate at a 26 year high) on the friday and it will arrive on Monday (that is what my mate did). And it also doesnt have an useless software on it – seeing plenty of positives here!

    • Andrew says:

Could you advise the site he got his phone from. I think I’ll have to look into it. Same reason – I’ve been out of contract for several months waiting for new phones to be added to the stale Telstra range.

  2. amar says:

July has started. When can we expect this to be available in stores?

  3. Fin says:

I want this Phone now Should i just go to vodafone to get it oh well i guess Im going to have to.

  4. Henry budziarski says:

I need to know how much Samsung Galaxy S2 plan per month for 24 months 49 or $59 per month

  5. Katrina says:

So I rang a Telstra store this-arvo and they seem to think arouf the 19th of this month :)

  6. Tiff says:

went in to telstra today! the phone will come within the next two weeks! the staff had already seen the phone! they dont know the price until the day but !

  7. Steve says:

HURRY UP!! HURRY UP!! HURRY UP!! getting really sick of waiting

  8. Michelle says:

It’s now to be released at the END of July instead of the middle of the month! I spoke to someone in the Chadstone Telstra shop and he said it was even a possibility they might sell out in some of the more popular stores.

I’m so keen on this handset. I’m with Optus now with my old 3GS and the reception is shocking. It was great when I started but in the last six months or so it’s gone down hill severely to the point where I have ‘No Service’ in prime locations.. it makes no sense. It’s always when I desperately need a map or to check a bank balance too. Part of it may be the handset but why the lack of reception now? I’m assuming if I called they would say they were doing a network upgrade or they would blame Apple and not solve the problem. I’ve been to the Apple store and they of course, said it was a carrier issue.

I’ve just been really wary of Telstra. I’ve been with Optus for years and it’s been excellent service. Telstra is just so expensive. I’m not a heavy heavy user, but I like to have as many GB of data as possible (just in case) and I do make the occasional 30 minute mobile calls. But I’ve always managed to stay under the $650 cap I have with Optus. I just feel that although I love the idea of full coverage, I’m not sure they’ll offer the plan for me. It’s $59 for $750 worth of calls with Optus, but $100 for the same amount on a similar phone with Telstra. I’m still unsettled to believe that full reception is worth $40 for a personal phone. Not to mention the extravagent monthly handset prices..

    • TD says:

Hi michelle, I have a personal phone and I’m also waiting for the sg2, I’ve been with telstra since I turned 18 and got my first nokia 5110 I have moved to voda and optus because of pricing but ended up coming back to telstra both times because for me coverage is very important. What’s the point of having a mobile phone when you can’t get coverage in some metro area and sometimes in the city? Also these days data speed is a huge factor with the types of phones that are coming out.

I’ve come to accept that you’re always going to pay a premium for telstra but it’s been worth it for me to get fast data and coverage wherever I am even when I go into the country for family holidays. I use my phone on a daily basis for calls, always on the internet either I am on a$59 cap with unlimited sms and 1.5gb of data and I don’t go over my cap and only use about 10% of my days each month. 1.5gb is ALOT of data on a mobile phone. Also I use my wifi when I’m at home.

So for me yes I know I pay a little more for my mobile than my friends on other carriers, but I also get coverage when my friends don’t. My data is faster if we have a race to look up info on the net who can get the answer first I always get it first. If I need to check share prices I can check and buy or sell quickly without having to worry about whether my internet speed will hold up or let me down.

So ultimately it’s up to you if you really cant afford it go with another carrier but if coverage and speed is important to you and your monthly budget allows, I’d go with telstra. Like I said I don’t mind paying a little extra to get what I want from a mobile phone carrier. I think if you get an expensive phone that can do so much, you should be on a network that will allow you to get the most out of the phone. They’ve definitely changed quite a bit over the years you don’t have to wait on hold for 30 mins anymore when you call them for help you pretty much get straight thru now. Sure some of their call centers are in the philipines but tell me one carrier who doesn’t have a val centre overseas. I find some of the philipines consultants are a lot more polite too :)

  9. Graham mitchell says:

    Enjoy your BLOATWARE, folks!

  10. Michael Proctor says:

Would be nice for Telstra to update this with an approximate release time and what plans are expected. it’s been out a while elsewhere

  11. Matt says:

Optus have $59 +$5 handset which is not bad!

  12. Michael Ferguson says:

    Release some pricing already !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Jason says:

Come on guy’s, enough teasing already. We’re all waiting patiently to hear something about the SGSII and Sensation and quite frankly it’s a joke! The way things are going these devices will be obsolete by the time you release them.

  14. The only reason I’m waiting for this is because I live in a rural area and Telstra has the best service. FML.

    • Ben says:

Seriously. Isn’t that the ONLY reason anyone goes on Telstra? Their reception?

    • Gregory Opera says:

The best coverage (by far!), the fastest data speeds (again, by far!) and they’re Australian-owned…

The last point is particularly important- whilst everyone else is quick to “sell Australia” these days, I prefer to buy Australian! If Telstra ever became foreign-owned, well they’d instantly loose the majority of my loyalty (though if the network remained in its current state, I’d probably stay, I just wouldn’t be loyal!)…

  15. Michael Proctor says:

I wonder if the delay in release for Telstra was due to the “Exclusive” rights they had with the Motorola Atrix.

Still tossing up between them, but the Galaxy S II ticks every box, latest android OS, fastest processor, better screen (not in resolution but definition), thinner and better camera… so seems like the logical choice, though it does worry me that being that “thin” that the device might have gremlins in the future from design compromises to get it that thin.

  16. Michael Proctor says:

    Bah, more food for thought
Atrix will have 2.3 soon, which will mean a much more developed product being on the market for nearly 6 months versus the new samsung
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Motorola-ATRIX-4G-to-Taste-Android-2-3-Gingerbread-in-July-207639.shtml

    Then there is
    http://samsunggalaxys2review.org/houston-we-have-a-problem-samsung-galaxy-s2-samoled-plus-screen-at-stake

Maybe Telstra have been holding off due to Samsung?

  17. daniel says:

I think I speak for myself and many others when I say that all it would take to appease many of us is an honest answer as to why the pricing wasn’t released when promised, or at the very least a message acknowledging people’s frustration. The silent treatment is poor form especially when Telstra is pushing this whole social networking aspect of their customer communications. Only makes you look worse when you’re not keeping up to date with people’s posts and responding in kind.

    • Gregory Opera says:

As a former Telstra employee, I can understand the various delays behind a handset’s release, but I have to agree with daniel- the “silent treatment” certainly isn’t helping Telstra’s image.

Surely it can’t be that hard to setup a page on Telstra.com with (limited) details on upcoming handsets?

I mean you wouldn’t specify prices for obvious reasons, and you would be sure to point out that the details/release dates are subject to change, but that would at least be something and certainly a lot better than seemingly ignoring your customers?

  18. Anthony says:

Actually it’s $79 for $800 worth of calls on the Freedom Connect Plans. short of the $100 your claiming ;)

Astrogirl, We’re close to confirming the in-market date and pricing for Galaxy SII and we expect to announce these details early next week.
    Thanks for your patience

    Early next week!!!
    Wheres the announcement??

    • David says:

I know right early next week.. technically that means they have up until Wednesday lunchtime then it becomes ‘later in the week’ Let’s hope for an annoucement today though.. Do you think Telstra will offer a pre-order system I don’t want to miss out..

    • cosjav says:

No wonder no Telstra rep is replying anymore, because those that do aren’t giving correct information….

  20. Matt says:

Does anyone from Telstra actually read this forum? I’m so over Optus with all their data and voice dead spots in the Sydney CBD, but honestly, Telstra is such a slow moving monolith!

Telstra, so that we can give you our money (yes, we are potential customers here), please provide for the Galaxy S II:

    - A commitment on date of availability
    - A pre-ordering facility
    - A price

    • Gregory Opera says:

As I type this, Telstra are putting the finishing touches on a new social venture that will better allow customers to provide feedback from both their mobile phone/tablet OR their computer, as well as seek detailed technical support at their convenience…

I can’t give you a firm availability date as I am not a Telstra employee, but I am told it isn’t too far away and should be ready soon.

Don’t forget that whilst TEX (Telstra Exchange) does allow customers to post comments, it is first and foremost a place for Telstra to make news available to general consumers, not a support and/or feedback site… Yes Telstra do accept feedback and provide support at times, but TEX is and always has been a consumer news site first.

With this upcoming social venture however, this should no longer be a problem…

  21. Adrian says:

Well at my local telstra shop in Robina on the Goldcoast , i have been told 16th of July?

    • Ryders says:

I’ve been told 16th by the Rhodes Shop as well, now it’s the 19th they are saying..

I’m #1 on their waiting list and they confirmed stock is coming, so if I don’t have the phone activated and in my hands at 10am on the 19th I’m a new Optus customer – Ha, bloody Telstra!

  22. OMG says:

would you all stop your b*tching its being released on the 26th of July! Look at this link and find out why it has taken longer to be released on Telstra, its not that they’re slack, its that they want new technology to be optimised on their network. http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2011/07/06/telstra-to-launch-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-on-26-july/

    • Gregory Opera says:

As I’ve said previously, Telstra want the “it just works” experience that Apple is famous for, so at times this results in delayed products…

Get over it or as OMG so elegantly put it above, stop your b!#@%&@g!

  23. Katrina says:

I got my email today….QUOTE ” Great news, it’s pretty clear from the comments and feedback that you’re more than eager to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy SII, the wait is nearly over. We’re launching the SII on 26 July – you can find out all the details at http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2011/07/06/telstra-to-launch-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-on-26-july” AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2011/07/06/telstra-to-launch-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-on-26-july/

Guys Telstra should be updating you on this. But this came up today at lunchtime.

  25. Tomas says:

You are all complain over nothing. Out of Optus, Vodafone, 3 Telstra have the best coverage and the best and trustworthy phones.

They take longer and i know that can be hard but unlike the other companies Telstra test the device until it dies and then make it work again until it does not have an issue. The other thing you all have to remember is that you have the option to go with another company for your services that can offer a better deal but that is only due to government rules that state Telstra can not undercut the competition due to being the Australian Government property all those years ago.

So stop winging and let Telstra do what they have to do the phone will come out, and when it does getting it on Telstra NextG or even their 4G (coming November 2011) it will have better speeds and coverage then any other company.

    That’s my 2 cents.

    • Pavel says:

      I second that.
And remember: The quality will continuously be enjoyed long after the price is forgotten :-)

    • Ryders says:

      Tomas,

I’ve been following this thread from day one.. and the *whinging* is on the lack of comms (even when Telstra announces there will be updates). The waiting period is a pain, yeh, but we all know Telstra is slow, we all know their service can be average at times, we all know their pricing structure is inflated (reasonably to cover for a better network). If we are all still reading this, is because we actually want to be a Telstra customer *despite* all of that. However the marketing *game* and so-called social/digital turn they are trying to take and the atrocious communications on their part is what is infuriating.

Arguably, everything in live is around communications. Work, Projects, Relationships, you name it.. bad/no comms is just not a healthy sign, no matter how good (or bad) things are in reality..

      That’s my 2 cents.

    • Gregory Opera says:

      Well said!

    • Sebastian says:

I agree w tomas. So my 2cts.are. Get it now w optus virgin or anyone BUT telstra. Andget a new 4g phone when telstra has some time testing its new 4g which will be about when this contract ends! And enjoy this phone Now and telstra s 4g next contract.

  26. Nathan says:

I have to say I am more than a little concerned that the firmware has been tampered with by Telstra…

  27. Mobilegeeks says:

Yea im waiting for the Samsung G2, the video playback is awesome and totally clear. I did a review on HTC wildfire S the other day if you want to check it out.

  28. Wahid says:

    Hi All

I’ve got my S2 and unfortunately, this is the second handset that I got. First and second both have poor wifi issues. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with optus, telstra etc etc but the phone itself. :(

Now I am scratching my head to decide whether I take this beautiful phone back and get out of my contract while I can :(

  29. Jeffrey says:

Will the galaxy SII have blue tick approval for regional use?

  30. James says:

Is this phone heart tick approved? I have high cholesterol….

    • OMG says:

I’m glad someone asked this question I was wondering the same. it wasn’t easy to find the answer but Looks like the dual core processor is made of canola oil and sunflower seeds which if proven to lower cholesterol each time the user accesses the intermanet. is there anything this phone can’t do??

  31. Nathan says:

This is doing my head in.

I gave in yesterday and did what I should have done two months ago, and bought it from Virgin, free upgrade, one month wiped off my contract early and 50% off $59 for 5 months with $0 repayments. $700 calls, 3Gb data, Unlim TXT.

Telstra just aren’t worth the pain; and they missed out of $159 a month in internet too!

  32. Nathan says:

@gregory , Australian companies whinge about people not supporting their business, why should we when it’s far cheaper to buy elsewhere? If they can compete on pricing then fair enough, but I got my SGSII on a $59 plan and will save over $700.00 over 24 months, at least, by NOT getting it with Telstra.

    • Michael Proctor says:

      Your comparing apples with oranges.

The Telstra network coverages a large population area (especially in regional areas) this comes at a cost, when a Tower can only get upwards to 30/40km this means that Telstra has to support infrastructure in alot of remote places to provide coverage along national highways/rural towns etc.

This is what costs more as it costs more to run. Those other twits just put their shit on other peoples infrastructure and don’t target those smaller areas as it isn’t cost effective. Are you saying that Telstra should drop support for rural areas remove their towers and only support main town centers like the competition do, which would reduce their costs and allow for them to drop their prices? Next time you visit somewhere like Cairns, QLD I am sure you will be bitchin about the lack of coverage.

      my 2cents

  33. timbo says:

People, i actually have a galaxy S2 and i’m on the new $49 cap plan, my phone works fine on nextg – it’s optus branded i purchased outright.
let me just say the gs2 is a fantastic phone. the only very minor thing i could fault it on is the in call volume when on speak should be louder.
fyi, the screen is nothing short of amazing. trying to say it’s not a selling point is like saying the Eiffel tower being tall isn’t important.

  34. Rachel A says:

Why not buy a SGII outright here in the Philippines for just AU$600 and Go for a BYO $79 Freeedom connect plan. We have samsung galaxy SII in the market since june :)

  35. Bree says:

Well… Pre -order my backside…….. Have tried 5 times now to order and am constantly getting error messages. Not Happy Jan!!! I cannot even pick it up from a local store on pre- order. It is offering stores an hour away, when i have a telstra store 2 minutes down the road or at worst 15mins away. Dumb!

  36. perth says:

27th of july release in perth…… according to the garden city telstra shop, $59 cap +$15 for phone

  37. freakygeek says:

Finally got my Galaxy SII from Telstra only to find that it shipped with Gingerbread 2.3.3 which appears to have a battery drain issue (Google “Android OS battery drain 2.3.3″)

How do you explain that Telstra, after delaying the launch of this handset so you could ‘Optimise it for your network’ ??

Did you not pay any attention to the fact that the handset doesn’t even last from 9am-5pm with minimal usage??

Very frustrating after waiting so long. When will there be a 2.3.4 Firmware released for my brand new handset to correct this issue… so that I can untether myself from the cord that feeds this phones currently insatiable appetite for electricity?

    • timbo says:

sorry but your full of it. i just did a 6 hour flight using my phone to watch movies and am still on 40%

    • Seb says:

Timbo/freak. dont fight. You both knew this was gonna happen. IF you thought telstra was going to be any better than optus or voda or even virgin you were dreaming.
Optus coverage might be a bit bad in comparison, and that’s the bottomline, telstra is a bit better in SOME areas, but the handset is the same no matter where you buy it. I got friends who ordered it @ voda and optus and are extremely happy.
And now with the ridiculous 59+20$ repayment plan vs 55 or 59 everywhere else with even more usage/time Telstra is in a very bad situation, at least for personal customers. Companies (large) might still use them, but they definetly lost the general public with this move.

    • freakygeek says:

Telstra is the ONLY option in my area. Optus & Vodafail coverage around here is absolutely abysmal. The $20 or so difference per month doesn’t worry me in the slightest – I need at least $100/mo plan for my usage.

What does bother me is that I have a handset which doesn’t last a full business day on battery. Whether that is the same on Optus/Vodafone isn’t relevant. I’m not even blaming Telstra for the issue either, clearly it isn’t network related. It’s an Android issue so hopefully the updated firmware to correct the issue doesn’t get delayed by Telstra for too long (LOL who am I kidding)

      Cheers

    • Nathan says:

@freakygeek maybe you have something wrong with your phone, mine goes two day easily. It’s not an Android problem either, iPhone’s barely manage a day either if lucky! Mine used to last 4 hours max with half heavy use. The SGS2 is phenomenal on battery use!

    • Aaron says:

@Freakygeek. Try disabling wi-fi sharing. Everything I’ve read so far has said that this is a massive drain on battery, and it seems to be enabled by default. Google it and find instructions, I don’t know off the top of my head, but I get my SGS2 (from Telstra) tomorrow. Let me know if you have any issues and I’ll post instructions tomorrow.

    • Gregory Opera says:

Sounds like you’ve either got a problem with your settings, or a problem with your device… I’ve used a number of Android devices over the last year or so and even the worst of them was able to achieve at least half a day of heavy use!

I’d take it into your local T-Life store and ask for the resident “geek”… Tell them your problem and get them to have a look over the settings.

In the unlikely event you’re still having issues, your local T-Life store will send it off for you, with the option of a loan phone available (though ring ahead if you want a loan phone, ’cause sometimes they run out!)…

    • Paul says:

Freaky, make sure that GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Auto-sync are all switched off (if you aren’t using em); these can drain power quickly.

For sync settings: Settings->Accounts and Sync

And of course, touch the top of the screen and drag down to quickly access Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth etc.

You also might want to add the ‘power savings’ widget to your home screens.

Also, hold the ‘home’ button down for a moment and go to task manager; check that nothing is churning over in the background and sucking up power, clicking ‘exit all’ will close them all down.

    • Paul says:

Oh and make sure your screen brightness is set to auto, and not cranking at full all the time :)

    • Gregory Opera says:

Actually Paul, you probably want to avoid the “automatic” brightness setting on devices that have it enabled (it’s disabled on my Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY) as the handset will automatically scale-up to 100% or similar when your surroundings are fairly bright (e.g. outdoors)!

Your best bet is to disable the “automatic” brightness setting, take the handset out into direct sunlight and manually set the brightness to the lowest level you can tolerate, lower being obviously better… You should notice considerable battery savings.

    • freakygeek says:

Thanks for all of your tips, however as I mentioned before, google “Android OS 2.3.3 battery drain” and you will see that this is not simply a ‘settings’ issue. If you check ‘Battery Usage’ it shows Android OS consuming more battery % than calls or display etc. My phone seems to have settled down after a few battery-out reboots but this is not just an issue with my particular handset. I don’t have bluetooth or wifi turned on unless I’m using it, or GPS, even though GPS only uses power when an application requests it. Also other apps in the background, well, I realise that and I wouldn’t say there was a problem with the phone if I hadn’t checked the most basic things first!

  38. daniel says:

When did Telstra ever say that they’ll be releasing this device with firmware 2.3.4? You can’t blame Telstra for something which you think they ‘should’ have done and which they never mentioned or even inferred they’d do.

FWIW the 2.3.4 version of the firmware for the GSII floating around on the net still has the battery drain issue anyway so having this firmware version would not have fixed your issue regardless.

    • freakygeek says:

I never suggested that they promised anything.

It’s just rather frustrating that they release a handset that is supposedly ‘tested’ (which is why we wait so long, remember?) and the freaking thing drains its own battery whilst sitting idle in 8 hours without even installing any additional applications. It really is quite useless in its current state if you’re not near a charger or PC etc all day.

And ‘Timbo’ – that’s great to know. However, just because your phone doesn’t exhibit the same issue doesn’t mean I’m ‘full of it’. Have a look around the various Android forums etc. It is definitely a common issue. Want to swap handsets? LOL

  39. Nathan says:

Freaky, it definately seems you have a device issue. I am on to my second SGS2 now after politely handing Virgin back theirs and giving in and getting one from Telstra, anyway I again am going 2 days easily in between charges.

In fact if I forget to plug my phone in before I go to bed, I wake up in the morning and the battery hasn’t even moved.

Both the SGSII’s I have had are awesome beyond belief for battery life.

You should get your phone tested IMHO.

  40. Holly says:

Does anyone know if SG2 works in rural areas? Am considering purchasing a handset but not sure if it will get enough coverage… Live near Newbridge/Bendigo. Thanks.

    • Andrew says:

Holly, I just tried my S2 in Port Hedland, Kalgoorlie and Texas (near Stanthorpe, Qld) and surrounding areas. It wasn’t too bad although strangely I had more trouble in Kal. I got the usual issues of coverage when I got away from the town centres on the road but it was no worse than other phones in my group. On the other hand it certainly wasn’t better and while I am very happy with my phone I don’t think the server and email connection always works well in the country. It can be erratic or slow at times (and then other time blindingly fast!).

    • Andrew says:

PS. I found in Kalgoorlie that reception worked better when I removed the plastic (Belkin) protective cover.

  41. Michael Proctor says:

Bought mine through Telstra Business, use it around Cairns, currently driving to Mackay, coverage has been pretty good, cant say for sure but seems better coverage than iPhone 3Gs i had previous. Battery life seems on par with iPhone. overall quite impressed with Android

  42. Hi guys well my 3 week old telstra ssg2 phone started to die with random power shut offs to overheat, rapid battery drain. I’m super disheartened by this. I’ve taken it back for an \assessment\, they guy said maybe 2 weeks. Reckons its the battery, though I bought another geniune battery (with the same problem experiencing). To me its something broader than that. Even though its under 30 days he said the phone will get cracked open and probably the guys switched out and sent back and we’ll see how we go (telstra shop this btw). I asked about when the next android firmware was coming out 2.3.4 and he also indicated it would be unlikely due to other phones coming out on the market. Sorry but this is really disheartening – not sure what to do. I have the repair receipt thingy if you need details.

    • Peter, Please send me your account and a contact number and I will have someone look into this for you. You can use this online form.

    • peter says:

Thanks matey I’ve sent info through as directed

    • peter says:

      Hi Brendan, me again :(

Well, I’ve done what you have asked, and will send through yet another email via the online form (though never got a response from the first one??). I got a call from the Telstra shop and well as suspected the phone was tested, the firmware redone and sent back in record time. The guys said “hey you should have brought in all your bits and pieces and asked for an ELF assessment”. Well I was not impressed as thats what I tried to do in the first place and hence my first posting here. They said we’ll its the last day for ELF we’ll send this back so I (funny brought the stuff along) handed the nice guy the equipment and he sent the phone off again. I got angry Brendan over a phone, I dont dont and shouldnt do this. But I suspected this would happen. Please note the tech guy int he shop actually gave me the great advise when I initially troubleshooted the phone and said to bring all the stuff in within 30 days. Its the next guy that said what I ended up posting. I’ll send this information with the new RR number. I’m just bitterly disappointed now and would like this case expedited!

    • Thanks Peter, I’ve forwarded this one for you. Can take upto 72 hrs but usually 48.

Hi ppl, Nicole from Telstra customer relations is ‘ACE’ though I encounter more local problems my phone was replaced as part of ELF. Hopefully this phone will work out. Thanks heaps Brendan for helping out and pass on my thanks to nicole!

    • You’re welcome Peter. I’ve forwarded your thanks to Nicole. Thanks for taking the time to comment back. Brendan.

    How much is this phone????

  45. Ryders says:

Rooster, how reliable is that information? or how much is just you making things up for a *likely* scenario? You seem to be well aware of what could be going on. The only thing that’s making me go eek.. is (3) Telstra stock is detuned for other networks??? f-a-r-k! are you able to tell me whether this is a software or hardware change? I travel overseas on a monthly basis, I’m happy to root/flush the phone if I have to (not mentioning the warranty), but will be less happy if this is a hw thing…!
    Any clue?

Wow… Talk about a conspiracy theorist!

Whatever helps you sleep at night dude, whatever helps you sleep at night…

  47. Nathan says:

Voda run an 850 network now

  48. Gregory Opera says:

And yet Vodafail still struggles to have reliable coverage, Nathan… I don’t speak from experience of course, but there appears to (still) be a LOT of people complaining and I know that the few people in the Puckapunyal Military Area with Vodafail complain of poor coverage, including in town.

Personally I think 3 would’ve been better going it alone, but that’s a whole other discussion for another day…

Please don’t treat my previous post too seriously. However, I do very concerned about the antenna tuning as has been menioned at http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2011/07/06/telstra-to-launch-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-on-26-july/ “Better UMTS 850 RF sensitivity reducing instances of call drops and improved data speeds. This was achieved by asking Samsung to tune the calibration of the antenna based on Telstra’s test results”. We all know too well that if one only tune the filter and antenna for 850MHz performance, it could result a small gain. At the same time, it could substantially compromise the performance on the 900Mhz band.

I hope Telstra could clarify about this and release some relevant technical data. Otherwise, it would be a safer bet to buy elsewhere unless one only intend to use it with Telstra 850MHz NextG (umts).
