A journey to the Royal Wedding
What does my role at Telstra have in common with me venturing to London for the Royal Wedding? I am not sure… but I have 24 hours on a plane to work out the tenuous link.
Working in Investor Relations, we have the opportunity to speak to Telstra’s shareholders – large and small. Are there any members of the royal family that would like to invest some of their hard earned funds in our great Australian company? With the Queen being close to retirement, how could she resist such a high yielding income stock like Telstra?! This may be unlikely… but probably the closest link that I will get.
Alas, I am about to embark on a journey to the “old blighty” to join the masses in celebrating what will perhaps be the wedding of the century.
One of my earliest memories is of the party my mother held for Diana and Charles’ wedding. I also remember sitting on the roof of our family station wagon waving a British flag watching Diana and Charles drive down Anzac Highway in Adelaide two years later. Majesty magazines were common in our household – so I have my mother to thank for my love of the royals.
I have been ridiculed by those not quite as dedicated as myself to the cause, but I am slowly hearing of more people that are going over the wedding. Are there any out there who will be joining me outside Westminster Abbey?
While a royal love story and wedding is ageless, what is different between 1983 and 2011 is certainly technology and how the wedding will be covered. Sure, every free to air channel is having a “royal special” running all day (and night) but think of how the advent of twitter, facebook and even Skype on your mobile phone will impact how we are kept informed of the proceedings.
Will someone tweet from the bowels of Westminster Abbey or better yet, the wedding breakfast where there will be no media? Or is Buckinham Palace taking the same approach as Channel 9 and asking everyone to check their mobile phones in at the door. I hope not!
So now is the time to start “following” the English aristocracy on twitter to be kept up to date with what is going on behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace.
Are there any other royal wedding enthusiasts out there?
And who knows of someone with an invite and needs a date!? I will pack my hat and finest attire just in case.

No offence Lisa but I could have represented Telstra shareholders here in London during the Royal wedding, and for zero cost.
London is spick and span and is really a treat during the fine warn days being experienced at the moment, hope it holds for the wedding.
Hi Syd. Just a note to say have a great time in London and Lisa is going to the Royal Wedding at her own expense. She’s a big fan and to help her out in reporting for us we have loaned her a Flip cam. Brendan.
Hey Lisa, really looking forward to your commentary on the big day. Hope you packed an umbrella.
Thanks Ros. The umbrella is definitely packed although I have seen some stylish royal wedding ponchos that I may wear for the big day!
